    Yea, mine went out, engine wouldnt start, took it to Mini (didnt buy the car from them, just figured if anyone can figure out whats wrong it would be a mini dealership) they gave me a loaner car and had mine for 2 weeks checking out. Get phone call saying tensioner went out, wreaked havoc on the engine, whole thing would need to be sent off for rebuild. $8,000 repair. Awesome. I just got out of the army, jsut spent every dime moving to new city, starting new job, had nothing to my name. Now I need 8grand to fix my car? Beautiful. I was in tears at work. Told them I would need time to get the money together. They asked how long. I said atleast 6 months. So they said they would call me back. Another week goes by, the GM for the Mini dealership calls me. Says he heard my situation, says they will do the repair at cost, just pay for parts (not marked up, their price) and they will cover labor. Cut my cost down to about $3000. Said I still need a few months to get that together, he told me not to worry, to keep the loaner car for as long as I need. He emailed me a document with his signature saying I can keep it until my repairs were finished. 3 months later I paid my bill and got my car back. That was 3 years ago, I take my car to them for everything. Sure dealers may over charge and can be expensive places for repair, but the Mini dealership where I live, where I didnt even buy my car from, saved my ass. Plus they helped make sure all my paper work was in order so I can submit it to the class action lawsuit against mini for the timing chain issue. So fuck the engine and stupid car I have had so many nightmares with, but thankyou Mini for being super awesome and helpful.

    Hello I’m a mechanic that bought a Mini Cooper for my daughter and like most people I thought the mini was the cutest car. But just as some people have commented, this car has lots of maintenance issues Because my daughters mini stayed on the lot for a while. I’ve changed out all normal maintenance items in the motor (engine oil and filter, spark plugs, air filter, cabin filter, put new lights on and all the black out trim to make it look nice. The difficult items that thew me for a loop is the spark plugs needed a special socket, the PCV diaphragm is built into the valve cover, the timing chain assembly, and the transmission fluid change. My daughters mini is a 2009 Mini Cooper non S model. I have all the parts installed and have pictures of you guys need help. If you are burning oil it’s because of a couple of issues and the main corporate is the PCV. Let me know and I’ll send you some information of what I have found out. Buy a Mini Cooper manual is the first thing I will tell anyone with this car. And not the one at your local auto parts store. Oh and I have interesting pictures of the timing tensioner before and after the install and it’s not what this RUclipsr said

      I changed the MAP sensor and PCV valve cover and still reading the same code. I reset the computer after but my car still running weird. Do you have any idea what could be the problem? Thanks in advance

    I know this is old, but if anyone have this issue and see this message. Here is an EASY WAY how to tell if you suspect your timing chain guide broken or crack or damage. Drain your Oil and exam for small pieces of "Plastic / Others" in your Oil + Filter. If you do not find any, then it's still aok and could be the flappers loose. If you see little pieces or fragments then you know what it is.
    NOTE: Change your Oil often and make sure it is "Synthetic". Regular Oil can break down / crack things when the Engine is hot.

    • @diegonavyhotmail
      @diegonavyhotmail 4 года назад +1

      which one or which part would be the flappers? do you have any videos?

    • @JodBronson
      @JodBronson 4 года назад +1

      @@diegonavyhotmail - Hi, it's actually the 'Valves'. I call it the "Flappers" since it flap up and down is what we are actually adjusting. See this guy's video here..... He explain it even better than I can. Link: ruclips.net/video/ZFvwyCroV2w/видео.html

    • @JodBronson
      @JodBronson 4 года назад +1

      @@diegonavyhotmail - By the way.... EXAM your Oil and that is very important !!! You will know a lot, just by doing that. NOTE: Use "Synthetic Oil", this will prevent parts 'Break-Down" since the 'Guide" is made of "polycarbonate". YES, cheap + crappy oil can break it down or made it weak during Hot/Cold during engine usage/running.

    just bought a 2012 countryman all4 s called the dealer they said that version does not have the timing chain problem. They also said keep an eye out for oil on the passengers side where the timing chain is and then go from there. they also told me the engine should have a similar small diesel sound on cold start days.

    I am surprised no one here mentioned (or maybe knows about) that these are BMW engines which are also used in earlier generation BMW 1 series. And BMW 1 series has this problem very much so. BMW did have a recall and fixed failing timing parts at no cost. To make matters worse the 1 series engines are oriented so that cam chain is behind, i.e. under the firewall, means one has to pull the whole engine out to work on it, what a Nightmare!!
    I have heard that problem starts when the thin oil jet in the tensioner gets clogged, stopping it from applying pressure on the chain. To avoid this, change oil and oil filter often, even before the change is due.

    This was a great explanation!! Thanks for taking the time to do this video!
    Were the replacement parts stock MINI parts?
    I need to replace my timing chain (67.5mm of play) and would like to use more sturdy parts if they are available (my car has ~59k miles).
    I had an Infinity G20 which I sold with ~225k miles and the timing chain was never replaced, so, I know that sturdy parts do exist!
    Thanks again,Lee

    Informative but exactly as he said, an overview only. I am a tech for a living and work at one of the few independent shops in my state (as far as I know and have heard by the amount of these things we do) that have the necessary tools to do this. Depending on the year and aspiration (turbo or non), it requires different specialty tools. As far as we have seen, this happens to any mini made before 2012. We have not done one made after 2011, but that's not to say it doesn't happen to those too. It's a difficult job if you've never done it. And doing it wrong can lead to more harm than good short term (in then end it's catastrophic). Make sure whoever is doing the work knows what they're doing. Torque specifications on these things is very important (i.e. you don't just put the tensioner in and call it a day, you have to pre-tension it first, then tighten it to spec). Any questions I'll answer if I can. Good luck!

    • @wsdivall

      +Pawnit Notting My R56 is making the exact same noise. If it is indeed the timing chain rattle, will it harm it to drive it... or do I need to not drive it until it's repaired? I guess my question is can it cause more damage by driving it?

    • @cjnotting650
      @cjnotting650 8 лет назад

      +Wyatt DiVall yes it will do damage eventually. The reason the noise occurs is because the timing chain has lost tension. With that being said, once the chain loses tension the engine becomes out of time. If the engine gets too far out of time engine damage will occur. My suggestion would be get your car fixed ASAP.

  • @AlexandrosCannas

    When you said that the new tensioner is actually shorter, doesn't it mean that the car had actually already had a tensioner replaced under a MINI issued TSB?
    Also did you get to compare the length of the new and used chains? Was the used one longer?

      @@Chris-lf1ki I no longer have it but I noticed that some oil brands made a dramatic difference not just with my mini but multiple vehicles. Mobil 1 for whatever reason was the worst and amplified the noise, pennzoil was a little better, Rotella 5w40 was very good and Castrol 0W40 seemed to be the quietest. I also had a 95 Miata after the mini that was even worse on start up and if it sat for a week or two sounded like it was going to self destruct after a few oil changes when I finally tried Castrol 0w40 again I got the thing painted and was without the car for over a month went to start it up cringing my face expecting the nasty noise to be but nope quiet as can be same for storing the car over the winter. I don't believe in snake oils but from my personal experience Castrol 0w40 just has some sort of special touch that other oils do not. Rotella 5w40 is a close second other oils are all louder and Mobil 1 by far the worst I really don't know why exactly and did not want to believe it. I know it's hard to believe and your situation might be different but give it a try

    My car (2008 S) has 55k miles and the entire chain assembly was replaced in 2013, including tensioner. Noticed this morning (in about 30 degree temps) that there's some noise...very similar to "valve lash (?)" or lifter noise which Subarus are notorious for (cold starts). It may do it every day but since it's my wife's car, today is the first day i noticed it. Is this also "normal" for Minis? Thanks...great video.

    I purchased a new crankshaft hub (the peice that goes between the shaft and the balancer) and a new crankshaft sprocket the two don't match in size exactly. The hub seems tapered. While the old one slid right out of the sprocket. Does it sound normal that it must press fitted when torqing the crank bolt?

    So I've just bought a Peugeot 207 GTi which has the same PSA/BMW Prince THP 175 motor in it as the cooper S. Im wondering exactly what symptoms to look out for for this. My car is a 2008 with 53k miles on it. When it is cold there is a minor top end rattle which gets louder when you rev the engine past 2-3k or so. This rattle goes away once the oil has come to temp (when I did my pre-buy inspection the engine was already warm, kicking myself for that).
    Checked the oil and its filled to a good amount. Car also appears to drive well.

      +Angel27918 Yes but it is a different engine so you will need a different tool to lock the single cam shaft. The tensioner is similar but there are only 2 guide rails to replace. If you car has the rattle , don't drive it, get the tensioner replaced as they tend to stick with age and it may be worth replacing the 2 guide rails with new ones. Not a difficult DIY with the right tools and a Bentley manual and should take an afternoon to complete. If your guide rails are damaged you will need to drop and inspect the Sump for broken parts of the guide rails.

      he said in the video , in this cars case some of those broken bits wound up towards the bottom on the chain but luckily didn't get lodged near the sprocket at the bottom..which I assume would have ended up with a catastrophic engine failure.
      but I would think your right, if you further inspect and you don't have that problem you COULD just replace the top rail

      It would be nice if the aftermarket stepped in to correct the problem by redesigning the parts with a measure of durability rather than cost reduction in mind. Have to wonder if this was intentionally designed to just last for the duration of warranty coverage.
      First time I've dealt with a car that has its thermostat buried in a disposable housing, and with a lifespan that could be considered as a maintenance schedule. Perplexing as there are no advantages to doing it the way they did either. Temperature control is actually very poor, from the readings seen on a scan tool (a simple engine temperature gauge is conspicuously absent on this 'sports' car, though they had space for the wall size speedometer..)

    Asian made cars like honda, toyota, scion, kia, and mazda etc... last longer and more reliable than american, german cars etc...But all cars have problems when they hit a certain mileage.

      David Mclennan maybe you need to keep up with maintenance, 140k miles down and no problems.

      Vincent-Have you ever thought that you may just be lucky? I change my oil every 5000 miles and check the levels weekly. Timing chain still needed to be replaced at 100k miles. There's a reason BMW settled the class action lawsuit against them over this reason.

      Its the timing chain tensioner - has been upgraded 3 times , the late mk 2 models have the latest version .

    What I wanna know is why da f..k this people would design a car with this type of timming chain so many problems ... copy some shit from Toyota and Honda god dammit this car could easily be the best mini ever made but I guess someone in between the production said NO screw my task I just don't give a f..k about it let me just put this part in let's see what happens on the long term 😝😝😝 wow ...i have a civic 93 VX 180,000 and the timing belt still good !!!!! And yes 47 MPG!!!! I want to get a mini but this shit just kills it 4 me😩😩😩😩

    • @19jacobob93
      @19jacobob93 9 лет назад

      There are plenty of videos of the exact same thing happening to Hondas. I've literally just watched a video of a Civic with a failed chain tensioner like this.
      Also I have an Australian Ford Falcon and these things have passed 1.5 million KMs without having any work done on the engine, just serviced on time.
      It's not always the brand although yes with the Mini it is quite common!

      Fozee Black i own a 2009 mini base that may have a timing problem because of bmws cheap timing guides suck!And to fix it isnt exactly the easiest either being as tho the engine is so complex.Great car to drive etc but sucks on that part
