Why do people like you always act as if when someone tries to live a life closer to God, they are in a cult. The scriptures are pretty clear on certain issues even if you or others refuse to listen to the Word of God. God don't look at the outward appearance like you do. God sees the inner man. Due to the fact that her inner man is seeking to please God by sacrificing worldly apparel is a great indication that she cares more about what God sees rather than what a worldly man like you sees. Please don't take that as an insult, I'm just stating that some people seek worldly pleasures and other people seek spiritual pleasure. The Word of God clearly states that the Lord can only be worshipped by seeking the spiritual side. I've been doing research on this topic, and I've found that when it comes to jewelry it comes down to personal conviction. The reason I say this is because every time I've read in the bible about jewelry with negative connotations its because people have made the jewelry into an idol. Although I personally don't feel comfortable piercing my ears I think rings, necklaces and bracelets aren't much different from expensive designer clothes, an expensive house, an expensive car, nice watches, nice shoes, and loads of makeup. I think that anything that is excessive that comes between you and your personal connection with God becomes an idol. However, when it comes to jewelry I don't think the bible swears against it. There are instances when jewelry is referenced positively (Ezekiel 16), or when Abraham gifts Rebecca with jewelry as was the custom. In Adventist fundamental principles I know many do preach against jewelry, and my church included. For a while I thought: "man because it's hard to be rich and enter the kingdom of God, the best route is to be poor and dress in rags." Now I think that's ridiculous. So many times in the old testament God promises wealth and power to those who obey his commandment, as long as they put him before their materials. And the same goes with jewelry. Even money is the route to all evil, but that doesn't mean I'm gonna start boycotting dollar bills. A lot of Adventists tell me that we don't need jewelry and so its a sin; but it makes no sense when I see them replace that jewelry with cars, watches, and clothes: all things you use to adorn yourself. As for me, I see no wrong but I know many will disagree with their own convictions which is fair.

But yet you hear someone does something bad, you want to hit him with a Bible and accuse him quickly. God knows what's inside your heart and your intentions, and if we wear jewelry , we are not less of His child than anyone else. Our salvation is not based on it and besides in heaven we will wear them.

The wearing of the jewellery is not the sin, it's what it can lead you to do. Same as everything in this world God gifts you with. What about expensive clothes, shoes, watches, cars, houses, bags etc. Joseph was given a ring, Daniel was given a chain. Heaven itself is full of gold and jewelleries. Jesus wears a golden crown. God's tabernacles the Bible were decorated with gold. Before you decide what to do, please read the following scriptures Ex 3:22, Ex 13:35, Ex 11:2, Ezk 16:11, Ezk28-17. Gen 24:20-30, Ex 35:4-15 and many more scriptures about jewellery.

Wow... I literally just pierced my ears a few months ago! right before my 23rd birthday. I've always loved jewellery...and then this sermon popped up.. And I had been avoiding this sermon for a while but it kept popping up lol...I kept convincing myself it isn't such a big deal, like can he (God) really stop me from entering heaven because of earrings?? but I have just learnt its a big deal, simply because I value jewellery so much that I even began to feel slightly "incomplete" without it. I guess God wants me to realise I do not need to spend so much time and money worrying about adorning or making my outward appearance look beautiful..and to be confident that I'm wonderfully made. And to focus on building my character for heaven. Also because I'd love to be an evangelist some day, he probably wants me to set a good example lol...
That is because you were materialistic. It is not wrong to wear jewelry. It is wrong to prioritize it above spiritual things. Just like being rich is not wrong but being greedy and selfish is. Abraham was rich, as were many fathers of the faith. But they were not materialistic. There is a huge difference.

People this is a non Essential Topic that is between the person and The Holy Spirit. This isn’t a salvation issue. It’s the work of the Holy Spirit and sanctification process. IF jewelry becomes an idol then do away with it and all others. If it is a gift from God through a person from love and worn with love then exercise the gift of freedom.

In the story of the golden calf, what I gather is that jewelry worn wasn't sinful. They became problematic when they were taken off and smelted... I know not one scripture that condemns jewelry. Like many things in the SDA church and Christianity as a whole, jewelry too needs to be applied in moderation. The subject in contention isn't the jewelry but the motive behind their wearing.

A tale of losing the ring: My husband and I wear unobtrusive wedding bands. We are 3rd gen SDAs and none in the respective conservative churches we belong to wear rings. We are active in the church and serve leadership roles. So u could say we are going against the grain. We are plain in our clothing and shoes (I wear flats, no watches, etc)...some of the clothes I wear I got 20 yrs ago, but most are 2ndhand or someone bought for me...so all these details are to show that we do not take pride in our appearance. Our bands cost around $200 combined. A year after our wedding, we went island hopping. There were more than 10 islands that we went to that day. As we sat for dinner, my husband noticed that his ring was missing. Upon reviewing our photos we narrowed down the area where he likely lost it. It was not on an island...rather a lagoon accessible by a small hole under the limestone cliffs. My husband contacted the company who took us island hopping. They agreed but told us they should leave the main island by 5am and must come back around 7am so they could meet the tourists booked that day. Just a small window of time to find a small ring in the ocean. The boatmen were doubtful about our request: other swimmers might have come after us and seen it, or the movement of the sand covered it, or it could have fallen in between the corals. Also, it being white gold was easy to blend in the white sands of the area. I told the Lord, "Lord, it's just a ring. It's a small thing to ask from a great God. We're just puny human beings and this matters to us as a newly married couple. You can do so much and I know u can bring the ring back." Anyway, my husband and the boatmen arrived at the spot. It was barely daylight...so there was a problem seeing underwater (no hi tech lights) and also the area was surrounded by limestone cliffs. They dove for about 10minutes. Then the young boatman saw a sparkly thing...he picked it up...it was a coin! Beside the coin was my husband's wedding band. It's the most amazing thing that could happen to us. If I have doubts about God I just look at my ring to be reminded of his love, power and sovereignty. I guess u could say, we are not shedding our bands anytime soon.
All my clothes were bought at second hand stores many have designer labels however when I have purchased them I did not realized this. I bought them because they appealed to me thats all. The clorhes are plain, most have a tailored look as I do not like fancy clothes. However I have noticed in my church that many women wear makeup and jewlry and bracelets high heels without stockings, even very short skirts up to their thigh.. And this is a SDA Church! I have even seen a Pastor wearing cufflinks. I myself wear a small amount of makeup. Just a bit of powder and a very light touch of liprouge. The reason? I feel i look much better when facing the public. As long as your taste is not gaudy or loud I think this is ok. I have seen many come in with designer handbags.suits and shoes. And I know a very expensive piece of clothing when I see it. These must have cost them tons of money. Yet the church says nothing about this

The minute we start itemizing what is and is not vain, it becomes easier for us to judge others and evaluate their spirituality - which is not what God wants us to do. I know that people want to wear their best to church but that should not distract us from God. Well being a babe in Christ ... when I first came to the Lord .... I heard this teaching And I believed it ... until one day I just ask the Lord for myself, not man... didn’t think about it anymore.... maybe a month or two later , I have this dream where I was standing in front of a television and there was a choir singing powerfully... I felt the power of God through the television, what happened next was.... it was a huge choir of ladies singing, and The Lord panned in on one of of the ladies who had on gold earrings... and then the dream cut off..... So I believe I got my answer..... they did not affect the choir from singing the anointing!! It was all on one accord!!!! God knows all!!!

I wear jewelry and I have never been convicted in my spirit to put it away, although there are several things the Holy Spirit has convicted me about. I really like jewelry, but I know not to make an idol of it. I remember having this beautiful Michael Kors watch. I mean, it was designed so beautifully that I would look at it on my wrist all of the time, all day long. I had that watch maybe three days and then I lost it. The way I lost it didn't make sense and it was so obvious that the LORD took it from me. There was only one other watch like it when I bought it and I went back to the store to buy it and it was gone. I could not even get angry because I knew why GOD allowed me to lose it....lesson learned. All glory to Him!🙏🏽🙌🏽

For years I have been saved but many things are being revealed to me now through your teachings, e.g. Sunday worship. I even made a decision to look for a Sabbath church. May you teach about birth control...I heard from a colleague that it's not the will of God that we use contraceptives and condoms. Please enlighten me.
There is nothing wrong with wearing jewelry. He has not rightly divided the word regarding this issue. The bible condemns the WORSHIP of riches, not having them. Heaven itself is made of jewels and gold and precious stones. God created jewels. The bible does not condemn wearing jewelry, that is extra biblical legalism.

Ezekiel 16:11-14. You forgot to mention about God adorning Israel with gold/silver, bracelets, necklaces, earrings, jewels, and fine linen. Even God gave jewelry to His people. And if God did it then there’s nothing wrong with it. Just because people used it for bad purposes doesn’t mean it is forbidden.
From what I found.. Yes, the text seems to conflict with scores of other verses which condemn the use of colorful cosmetics and jewelry. Yet there is no real conflict if the context is considered. This is not a literal experience, but a symbolism. In verse 3, God begins the recital of a moving allegory concerning His people Israel. He depicts Israel being born illegitimately and cast into a field to die. No one washed the baby or cared for it. Then God passed by and loved the baby. He covered its nakedness and washed away its filth. He bestowed upon it love and every possible blessing. In allegorizing the material and spiritual blessings that He bestowed on Israel, God used a number of symbols which are clearly interpreted by other Bible writers. The “fine linen” of verse 10 is defined in Revelation 19:8: “The fine linen is the righteousness of saints.” The ornaments and chain of verse 11 are interpreted in Proverbs 1:9 as the “ornament of grace.” The jewel and crown of verse 12 are symbolic of “lips of knowledge” (Proverbs 20:15), and a “crown of rejoicing” (I Thessalonians 2:19), respectively. All the representations of highest honor, recognition, wealth, and beauty were incorporated in the allegory to show the unparalleled blessings which Israel had received as a nation. The symbolic ornaments of this allegory in no way mitigate the force of those texts forbidding the actual display of such vanity on the physical body.

I dont care if christians wear jewelry. I personally do not. As our relationship grows we hopefully see our value to Him. Being so much more than anything we can hang around our neck. This is a sad revelation to miss out on as we add exorbitant accessories to our life.
I have struggled with this topic off and on over the years. This is my conclusion. God knows our hearts. Man does not. He also knows if we have put things ie: idols before him. For myself, I have always been modest, I don’t spend a lot of money if any at all on adorning myself. I got married later in life, and come from many generations of marriages that have stood the test of time. No divorces at all. So wearing a wedding ring was very much a symbol of the vows I took, and my dedication to my husband thru thick or thin, in sickness and in health. I think God knows my heart, and will not fault me on this.
Let not your own conviction be the guide, pray about it to Jesus to help you undetstand. Do you see see the fruit of the tree in Eden, appealing to the eye as Eve saw it? The serpent says ‘you shall not surely die.’ Think about it.
There are verses in the bible where jewelry is not a problem, for instance gen 24:22. what or who is in our heart i believe is the issue, the intention of material things, anything can be a pride not only jewelry, it can be cars, houses,... in heaven we are going to wear a crown wirh luxurious stones
When I first was born again I attended a church that taught that woman shouldn't wear jewelry. I felt convicted and went home a threw all my jewelry away because i wanted to be pleasing to the Lord. Well, the Holy Spirit taught me a valuable lesson... But, it took me a few years to get it! I wasnt being convicted by the Holy Spirit to not wear jewelry. It was peer pressure that I was experiencing. So now...I live and walk my life by the Holy Spirit's conviction. If I don't feel his conviction about something...I can do what I feel with assurance that I am in his will. God bless

I think this pastor have never red this passage of Ezekiel 16:10 and following where God Himself agrees that to wear jewelry and beautiful garments is OK. There is no sin at all.
It is a pity you did not continue reading down to verse 15, which shows that becoming engrossed with their own beauty, the beloved of God turned their hearts away from Him. The jewellery is not in itself sinful, gold and silver are not silver. They are things. But the truth is that people usually end up wearing these items, not for the purpose of glorifying God, but for the purpose of calling attention to themselves. If that is not the very embodiment of replacing God with self, I don’t know what is. Better to err on the side of caution.
Carlon Mason, Its gonna be very long if i add it. My point here is God Himself adorned us BUT IF we will turn our face back to Him, then He will rip it off. My point is make up is okay to God. God will not get angry with us if we wear make up if our hearts is pure. We also need to to make up our hearts with His righteousness which is loving each other.

Amen Pastor Doug,I was born an Adventist & when i was a late teen i left the church & have only in the last 6mths or so returned,i'm now 48yrs old..The Lord Is So Merciful..but i've tattoos,i was trying to justify that it was okay because of my Polynesian culture but now i've a great regret about getting it done,even though my father tried to stop me i went on getting more.I've looked into the cost of removing them but i'm a man of little savings & it's so expensive..BUT if i can save enough i feel that i will go ahead & start removing them,even though i believe there'll be many folks in Heaven who had tattoos it still grieves me that i have them..Love your ministry Pastor,God Bless You.

Thank you so much for your straigtforward sermon. These days I am surprised to see that many Sda women even pastors and their wives are wearing jewelry throughout the world. We, as remnants who are to have the last great controversy , don't need to do those kind of trivial worldly things. We should follow Jesus in every way of life.
In the past, while I was married, I had a job that kept me from wearing my wedding rings as a safety measure. I was always very upfront about my marital status, but some men would still complain that the lack of a ring was “false advertising”. Wearing a wedding ring will not keep you from sinning if you are so inclined.
I have a hard time with the "would Jesus do this" argument. Mostly because He lived in a different time. Can you picture Jesus driving a car? I can't. Does that mean I shouldn't drive a car? I can't picture Jesus using a laptop either. Does that mean I should only use snail mail? Well, it seems strange to me to imagine Jesus walking down to His driveway to His mailbox. You get the point.

There is a strict warning about doing that in the book of Revelation. "Do not add or take away the words written in this book". Revelation 22 vs 18-19.
It becomes sin if you celebrate in a sinful way. Perhaps, like getting drunk on Christmas Eve. That's sin. Sitting by a fire sipping hot chocolate with your family/children reading the story of Jesus's birth, singing songs that praise and glorify his birth.......not a sin......I think God loves that type of thing. Sharing love together, reading God's word, remembering why and how Jesus came to earth as Emmanuel. That's a sacrifice of Praise. ❤

Some were so difficult that I laid on my face crying before the Lord. I have an experience with the Lord. And one thing I have learned over the years is that He requires your HEART not your Jewellery. Sorry but this is not the God I serve
I'd rather wear my little bit of extra money close to me than put it in the bank. When times get hard I always have some gold to pawn, then later go back and pay the...yeah...usury on that small loan and get my wearable money back. For me it's economics.
I’ve never studied the teaching of SDA. When I first listened to some videos I understood everything believed all of it, except never studied the sabbath. Wow all I had to do was look at a calendar. Sure enough, Day 1 is Sunday. My eyes really popped out thinking about something so obvious yet so ignorant about it. I will be studying Doug & the many others teaching to reach my own conclusion. I have a good feeling in my spirit. The original seed of my faith was planted by my grandma 50 years ago. I’m so thankful to God for keeping me close even though I’ve strayed so many times. I pray those days are never more. Thanks to Doug, Mark Fox & other Friends teaching the Word in Christ.

I don't over do or show skin but I don't pick the plainest dress at the shop or wear heels. I'm saved but not a an old school mom either. I don't think God minds if I have nice things and look good. I agree with you. God sees what man doesn't. Like I have mentioned we are not less of a child of God than someone who doesn't wear jewelry. With all due respect people need to be careful thinking that jewelry is bad, especially quoting things that is not in the Bible!
I am so grateful that I was never drawn to wearing jewelry. It just never appealed to me. I always felt that it was just a waste of money. I had a friend who thought she didn't have enough rings, on her hands. She had a ring for almost every finger! It never changed my friendships, or family attitudes. They just accepted it as my choice. I never berated anyone who chose to wear jewelry, and had quite a few friends. We got along just fine. As was noted, in another comment, it was a matter of choice. When I became a Christian, I realized, as Pastor Doug is pointing out, God does have something say about it, and I choose to follow His leading in this issue.
Pastor Doug Bachelor is a good teacher of the word of God. I believe this question about wearing jewelry or not is one of motive and conviction. Jewelry in of itself is neither good or bad, just like money. It's the love of it (idol) that makes it bad. The (Motive) of the Christian's heart should be the determined factor if they should wear jewelry or not. Case and point, if we're wearing it to draw attention to ourselves to impress others, that's the wrong motive. If we're wearing it because we believe we need to wear it to feel approved by others and to feel better about ourselves (our Worth comes from GOD!) Not jewelry or clothes were wearing. If a (Man and a Woman) who's married! Believe that wearing a wedding ring is an outward expression of their love for each other by letting the world know that they're married, there's nothing wrong with them wearing their rings. If a believer in Christ wears jewelry because they like to, not love or idolize it. But wear it modestly, not to offend or cause others to feel less than. In my understanding, I believe it's a matter of your heart towards these things. The verse in 1 Peter speaks also about putting on of apparel and the braiding of hair in addition to wearing of gold. So, are we not to wear clothes? Of course not, our dressing should be modest. Therefore, if my heart is set on having 6000 pairs of shoes and a new outfit for every day of the year then clearly something is wrong and my heart is set on acquiring things. So, I do not believe a doctrine should be made on not wearing jewelry entirely and ignore the other items mentioned in the verse. We cannot be selective. If wearing excessive jewelry becomes a weight in your walk with God then lay it aside. The Holy Spirit will guide you in all truth.
Mauricia Carr Same can be said of stealing. I “steal” food because my children are hungry. My heart isn’t to be cruel to the owner. My heart is to do something good for my child. It just goes on and on for unlimited issues if we chose them one by one to question based on how we feel about something. Once we insert “our understanding” where there is a clear “thus saith the Lord”, let us be aware that it never ends up well. What is the function of jewelry today besides narcissism, or focusing on self. What is the purpose of an earring? Nose ring? Brow ring? Finger ring? Necklaces? Bracelets, etc. it is to “adorn” the body and to make self the focus. Is there any greater assault on God than to focus on me rather than Him? The day shall come when these things will no longer matter, till then, let us use our time and resources on what really matters, the precious Word of God.
I believe is your heart, your obsession towards something. Some ppl have on a simple earring and that's that they are not obsess with it. Reason being for me saying is your heart towards it is because some people are obsess with cars, house etc the bible speak about houses and cars but it is still wrong to be obsess over something hence the reason I said is your heart towards things of this world. How about Ezekiel 16:10-14 Job was given rings and silver as gifts and he is known as one of the three righteous men. The father of the prodical son gave him a ring when he returned. Baby Jesus was given gold as a gift. God says silver and gold are mine. In heaven we are going to be awarded with treasures of precious stones. When God created Luficer he used precious stones. Abrahams servant gave Rebekah jewelery of gold, silver and to rhe brother and mother.

I am not an Adventist, but have had tremendous respect for Doug's scholarship. I do however I think that he has mishandled these passages, since the context of both passages do not deal with the jewelry issue. On casual observation, Pastor Doug is wearing a watch in this video. I can slightly agree, however, it really is bothersome that you pointed out all these scriptures on jewelry, BUT DIDN'T mention Isaiah 61:10 "I will greatly rejoice in the Jehovah, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation, he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels." So we can read clearly a bride wore jewels. And even more the scripture where God says to Isreal in Ezekiel 16:10-14 "I clothed you also with broidered work, and shod you with badgers' skin, and I girded you about with fine linen, and I covered you with silk. I decked you also with ornaments, and I put bracelets on your hands, and a chain on your neck. I think these scriptures are quite relevant and feel they should have been mentioned as well. Honestly I have questioned jewelry. I do wear a couple rings and maybe a necklace every now and then. I have felt a conviction more on earrings. However, I do not think it's going against God if you wear jewelry. Maybe if your decked out in costly Jewelry like 1 Timothy 2:9 states. But if worn modestly I don't feel a big conviction.

Yes we will wear crowns in heaven there is nothing wrong with jewelry in and of itself but here on earth it is a distraction and sometimes its not a distraction for the wearer but for the observer. Really they are not necessary to your life or your salvation.

I think that making “ not wearing jewelry” a doctrine , as something you HAVE to do , is misleading. This verse just tells us to be modest and to not seek being praised by our looks, but to reflect Jesus with what’s in our hearts. Remember when Jesus told their decuples this?: “The food you put into your mouth doesn't make you unclean and unfit to worship God. The bad words that come out of your mouth are what make you unclean.”” Matthew 15:11 CEV “But the words that come out of your mouth come from your heart. And they are what make you unfit to worship God.” Matthew 15:18 CEV For me is not what you put in your body or how you dress what makes you unclean , but what comes from your heart, and the reasons why you choose to dress like that. The verse about the modesty is just a guide for us to be modest and not to seek attention, but in any way is to make it into a doctrine, and being focusing on it like if your salvation depends on it. We know the sin comes from the heart. Being modest is not all about the appearance.

Nothing to do with Jesus' adornment. If you listen to this video, you'll find adornments relate to pride. You'll also hear the Pastor share bible texts citing "no" adornments. God wants us to cover ourselves with humility instead. The humble, meek and obedient will inherit the Kingdom of heaven.

Why do people like you always act as if when someone tries to live a life closer to God, they are in a cult. The scriptures are pretty clear on certain issues even if you or others refuse to listen to the Word of God. God don't look at the outward appearance like you do. God sees the inner man. Due to the fact that her inner man is seeking to please God by sacrificing worldly apparel is a great indication that she cares more about what God sees rather than what a worldly man like you sees. Please don't take that as an insult, I'm just stating that some people seek worldly pleasures and other people seek spiritual pleasure. The Word of God clearly states that the Lord can only be worshipped by seeking the spiritual side. I've been doing research on this topic, and I've found that when it comes to jewelry it comes down to personal conviction. The reason I say this is because every time I've read in the bible about jewelry with negative connotations its because people have made the jewelry into an idol. Although I personally don't feel comfortable piercing my ears I think rings, necklaces and bracelets aren't much different from expensive designer clothes, an expensive house, an expensive car, nice watches, nice shoes, and loads of makeup. I think that anything that is excessive that comes between you and your personal connection with God becomes an idol. However, when it comes to jewelry I don't think the bible swears against it. There are instances when jewelry is referenced positively (Ezekiel 16), or when Abraham gifts Rebecca with jewelry as was the custom. In Adventist fundamental principles I know many do preach against jewelry, and my church included. For a while I thought: "man because it's hard to be rich and enter the kingdom of God, the best route is to be poor and dress in rags." Now I think that's ridiculous. So many times in the old testament God promises wealth and power to those who obey his commandment, as long as they put him before their materials. And the same goes with jewelry. Even money is the route to all evil, but that doesn't mean I'm gonna start boycotting dollar bills. A lot of Adventists tell me that we don't need jewelry and so its a sin; but it makes no sense when I see them replace that jewelry with cars, watches, and clothes: all things you use to adorn yourself. As for me, I see no wrong but I know many will disagree with their own convictions which is fair.

Each writer gave their opiions as to how they understood things were passed on over hundreds of years. Quench not the Spirit. Recieve all teachings. Hold fast to that which is true. 1 Thes 5: 19-21. The wearing of the jewellery is not the sin, it's what it can lead you to do. Same as everything in this world God gifts you with. What about expensive clothes, shoes, watches, cars, houses, bags etc. Joseph was given a ring, Daniel was given a chain. Heaven itself is full of gold and jewelleries. Jesus wears a golden crown. God's tabernacles the Bible were decorated with gold. Before you decide what to do, please read the following scriptures Ex 3:22, Ex 13:35, Ex 11:2, Ezk 16:11, Ezk28-17. Gen 24:20-30, Ex 35:4-15 and many more scriptures about jewellery.

Wow... I literally just pierced my ears a few months ago! right before my 23rd birthday. I've always loved jewellery...and then this sermon popped up.. And I had been avoiding this sermon for a while but it kept popping up lol...I kept convincing myself it isn't such a big deal, like can he (God) really stop me from entering heaven because of earrings?? but I have just learnt its a big deal, simply because I value jewellery so much that I even began to feel slightly "incomplete" without it. I guess God wants me to realise I do not need to spend so much time and money worrying about adorning or making my outward appearance look beautiful..and to be confident that I'm wonderfully made. And to focus on building my character for heaven. Also because I'd love to be an evangelist some day, he probably wants me to set a good example lol...
That is because you were materialistic. It is not wrong to wear jewelry. It is wrong to prioritize it above spiritual things. Just like being rich is not wrong but being greedy and selfish is. Abraham was rich, as were many fathers of the faith. But they were not materialistic. There is a huge difference.

In the story of the golden calf, what I gather is that jewelry worn wasn't sinful. They became problematic when they were taken off and smelted... I know not one scripture that condemns jewelry. Like many things in the SDA church and Christianity as a whole, jewelry too needs to be applied in moderation. The subject in contention isn't the jewelry but the motive behind their wearing.

A tale of losing the ring: My husband and I wear unobtrusive wedding bands. We are 3rd gen SDAs and none in the respective conservative churches we belong to wear rings. We are active in the church and serve leadership roles. So u could say we are going against the grain. We are plain in our clothing and shoes (I wear flats, no watches, etc)...some of the clothes I wear I got 20 yrs ago, but most are 2ndhand or someone bought for me...so all these details are to show that we do not take pride in our appearance.
Our bands cost around $200 combined. A year after our wedding, we went island hopping. There were more than 10 islands that we went to that day. As we sat for dinner, my husband noticed that his ring was missing. Upon reviewing our photos we narrowed down the area where he likely lost it. It was not on an island...rather a lagoon accessible by a small hole under the limestone cliffs.
My husband contacted the company who took us island hopping. They agreed but told us they should leave the main island by 5am and must come back around 7am so they could meet the tourists booked that day. Just a small window of time to find a small ring in the ocean. The boatmen were doubtful about our request: other swimmers might have come after us and seen it, or the movement of the sand covered it, or it could have fallen in between the corals. Also, it being white gold was easy to blend in the white sands of the area.
I told the Lord, "Lord, it's just a ring. It's a small thing to ask from a great God. We're just puny human beings and this matters to us as a newly married couple. You can do so much and I know u can bring the ring back."
Anyway, my husband and the boatmen arrived at the spot. It was barely daylight...so there was a problem seeing underwater (no hi tech lights) and also the area was surrounded by limestone cliffs. They dove for about 10minutes. Then the young boatman saw a sparkly thing...he picked it up...it was a coin! Beside the coin was my husband's wedding band.
It's the most amazing thing that could happen to us. If I have doubts about God I just look at my ring to be reminded of his love, power and sovereignty. I guess u could say, we are not shedding our bands anytime soon.

All my clothes were bought at second hand stores many have designer labels however when I have purchased them I did not realized this. I bought them because they appealed to me thats all. The clorhes are plain, most have a tailored look as I do not like fancy clothes. However I have noticed in my church that many women wear makeup and jewlry and bracelets high heels without stockings, even very short skirts up to their thigh.. And this is a SDA Church! I have even seen a Pastor wearing cufflinks. I myself wear a small amount of makeup. Just a bit of powder and a very light touch of liprouge. The reason? I feel i look much better when facing the public. As long as your taste is not gaudy or loud I think this is ok. I have seen many come in with designer handbags.suits and shoes. And I know a very expensive piece of clothing when I see it. These must have cost them tons of money. Yet the church says nothing about this

The minute we start itemizing what is and is not vain, it becomes easier for us to judge others and evaluate their spirituality - which is not what God wants us to do. I know that people want to wear their best to church but that should not distract us from God. I heard this teaching And I believed it ... until one day I just ask the Lord for myself, not man... didn’t think about it anymore.... maybe a month or two later , I have this dream where I was standing in front of a television and there was a choir singing powerfully... I felt the power of God through the television, what happened next was.... it was a huge choir of ladies singing, and The Lord panned in on one of of the ladies who had on gold earrings... and then the dream cut off..... So I believe I got my answer..... they did not affect the choir from singing the anointing!! It was all on one accord!!!! God knows all!!!

I wear jewelry and I have never been convicted in my spirit to put it away, although there are several things the Holy Spirit has convicted me about. I really like jewelry, but I know not to make an idol of it. I remember having this beautiful Michael Kors watch. I mean, it was designed so beautifully that I would look at it on my wrist all of the time, all day long. I had that watch maybe three days and then I lost it. The way I lost it didn't make sense and it was so obvious that the LORD took it from me. There was only one other watch like it when I bought it and I went back to the store to buy it and it was gone. I could not even get angry because I knew why GOD allowed me to lose it....lesson learned. All glory to Him!🙏🏽🙌🏽

For years I have been saved but many things are being revealed to me now through your teachings, e.g. Sunday worship. I even made a decision to look for a Sabbath church. Ezekiel 16:11-14. You forgot to mention about God adorning Israel with gold/silver, bracelets, necklaces, earrings, jewels, and fine linen. Even God gave jewelry to His people. And if God did it then there’s nothing wrong with it. Just because people used it for bad purposes doesn’t mean it is forbidden.
From what I found.. Yes, the text seems to conflict with scores of other verses which condemn the use of colorful cosmetics and jewelry. Yet there is no real conflict if the context is considered. This is not a literal experience, but a symbolism. In verse 3, God begins the recital of a moving allegory concerning His people Israel. He depicts Israel being born illegitimately and cast into a field to die. No one washed the baby or cared for it. Then God passed by and loved the baby. He covered its nakedness and washed away its filth. He bestowed upon it love and every possible blessing.
In allegorizing the material and spiritual blessings that He bestowed on Israel, God used a number of symbols which are clearly interpreted by other Bible writers. The “fine linen” of verse 10 is defined in Revelation 19:8: “The fine linen is the righteousness of saints.” The ornaments and chain of verse 11 are interpreted in Proverbs 1:9 as the “ornament of grace.” The jewel and crown of verse 12 are symbolic of “lips of knowledge” (Proverbs 20:15), and a “crown of rejoicing” (I Thessalonians 2:19), respectively. All the representations of highest honor, recognition, wealth, and beauty were incorporated in the allegory to show the unparalleled blessings which Israel had received as a nation.
The symbolic ornaments of this allegory in no way mitigate the force of those texts forbidding the actual display of such vanity on the physical body.

I dont care if christians wear jewelry. I personally do not. As our relationship grows we hopefully see our value to Him. Being so much more than anything we can hang around our neck. This is a sad revelation to miss out on as we add exorbitant accessories to our life.
I have struggled with this topic off and on over the years. This is my conclusion. God knows our hearts. Man does not. He also knows if we have put things ie: idols before him. For myself, I have always been modest, I don’t spend a lot of money if any at all on adorning myself. I got married later in life, and come from many generations of marriages that have stood the test of time. No divorces at all. So wearing a wedding ring was very much a symbol of the vows I took, and my dedication to my husband thru thick or thin, in sickness and in health. I think God knows my heart, and will not fault me on this.

When I first was born again I attended a church that taught that woman shouldn't wear jewelry.
I felt convicted and went home a threw all my jewelry away because i wanted to be pleasing to the Lord.
Well, the Holy Spirit taught me a valuable lesson... But, it took me a few years to get it!
I wasnt being convicted by the Holy Spirit to not wear jewelry. It was peer pressure that I was experiencing.
So now...I live and walk my life by the Holy Spirit's conviction. If I don't feel his conviction about something...I can do what I feel with assurance that I am in his will.

I think this pastor have never red this passage of Ezekiel 16:10 and following where God Himself agrees that to wear jewelry and beautiful garments is OK. There is no sin at all.
It is a pity you did not continue reading down to verse 15, which shows that becoming engrossed with their own beauty, the beloved of God turned their hearts away from Him. The jewellery is not in itself sinful, gold and silver are not silver. They are things. But the truth is that people usually end up wearing these items, not for the purpose of glorifying God, but for the purpose of calling attention to themselves. If that is not the very embodiment of replacing God with self, I don’t know what is. Better to err on the side of caution.

In the past, while I was married, I had a job that kept me from wearing my wedding rings as a safety measure. I was always very upfront about my marital status, but some men would still complain that the lack of a ring was “false advertising”. Wearing a wedding ring will not keep you from sinning if you are so inclined.

I have a hard time with the "would Jesus do this" argument. Mostly because He lived in a different time. Can you picture Jesus driving a car? I can't. Does that mean I shouldn't drive a car? I can't picture Jesus using a laptop either. Does that mean I should only use snail mail? Well, it seems strange to me to imagine Jesus walking down to His driveway to His mailbox. You get the point.

Sitting by a fire sipping hot chocolate with your family/children reading the story of Jesus's birth, singing songs that praise and glorify his birth.......not a sin......I think God loves that type of thing. Some were so difficult that I laid on my face crying before the Lord. I have an experience with the Lord. And one thing I have learned over the years is that He requires your HEART not your Jewellery. Sorry but this is not the God I serve
I'd rather wear my little bit of extra money close to me than put it in the bank. When times get hard I always have some gold to pawn, then later go back and pay the...yeah...usury on that small loan and get my wearable money back. For me it's economics.
I’ve never studied the teaching of SDA. When I first listened to some videos I understood everything believed all of it, except never studied the sabbath. Wow all I had to do was look at a calendar. Sure enough, Day 1 is Sunday. My eyes really popped out thinking about something so obvious yet so ignorant about it. I will be studying Doug & the many others teaching to reach my own conclusion. I have a good feeling in my spirit. The original seed of my faith was planted by my grandma 50 years ago. I’m so thankful to God for keeping me close even though I’ve strayed so many times. I pray those days are never more. Thanks to Doug, Mark Fox & other Friends teaching the Word in Christ.

The papacy is a rich & powerful organization ordained by the devil himself. I do believe the papacy is antichrist & is leading the end times. My only concern is I am learning about Ellen White & how it seems their entire faith is built around her & I’m suspicious of it. Their practice & promotion of healthy living within the church is marvelous, but I’m concerned about finger pointing & “pure water”. To be honest I believe there is a lot to be learned from them, but I’m not sure about the stability of their church throughout the world. One thing is certain & that is the papacy re-wrote the 10 commandments AND no human being that lives or has ever lived has the power to absolve “forgive” sin. That includes all popes (called holy father) and priests called “father”. It’s pure blasphemy & makes me sick in the spirit.
Sabbath is most important Saturday sunset to sundown....People tend to follow the Fri to sat evening but that's not right God plainly said remember the Sabbath day not the Sabbath night.

Don't come to church just to look good and get peoples eye. Look good but let your light shine 1st and be Godly. Don't dress good only but be good or Godly. And will wear earrings but I wear the clip earrings and have no holes in my ears and do my hair and I wear nice clothes. God looks at the heart as well. I don't over do or show skin but I don't pick the plainest dress at the shop or wear heels. I'm saved but not a an old school mom either. I don't think God minds if I have nice things and look good. It depends on whats in your heart.
I agree with you. God sees what man doesn't. Like I have mentioned we are not less of a child of God than someone who doesn't wear jewelry. With all due respect people need to be careful thinking that jewelry is bad, especially quoting things that is not in the Bible!
I am so grateful that I was never drawn to wearing jewelry. It just never appealed to me. I always felt that it was just a waste of money. I had a friend who thought she didn't have enough rings, on her hands. She had a ring for almost every finger! It never changed my friendships, or family attitudes. They just accepted it as my choice. I never berated anyone who chose to wear jewelry, and had quite a few friends. We got along just fine. As was noted, in another comment, it was a matter of choice. When I became a Christian, I realized, as Pastor Doug is pointing out, God does have something say about it, and I choose to follow His leading in this issue.
Pastor Doug Bachelor is a good teacher of the word of God. I believe this question about wearing jewelry or not is one of motive and conviction. Jewelry in of itself is neither good or bad, just like money. It's the love of it (idol) that makes it bad. The (Motive) of the Christian's heart should be the determined factor if they should wear jewelry or not. Case and point, if we're wearing it to draw attention to ourselves to impress others, that's the wrong motive. If we're wearing it because we believe we need to wear it to feel approved by others and to feel better about ourselves (our Worth comes from GOD!) Not jewelry or clothes were wearing. If a (Man and a Woman) who's married! Believe that wearing a wedding ring is an outward expression of their love for each other by letting the world know that they're married, there's nothing wrong with them wearing their rings. If a believer in Christ wears jewelry because they like to, not love or idolize it. But wear it modestly, not to offend or cause others to feel less than. I believe these are good motives that God would be pleased with. I hope this blesses someone 😊

Keep reading after those verses then you will understand. You see those were the things Israel wanted just like the other nations, then look what happened. Got taught then a lesson by giving then what they wanted then they would see the result. Does God like polygamy? Of course not! He gave Adam only one wife. But then we see David and Solomon with many wives. Does it mean God now approved? No! But God gave them wives so that through experience the end result would be seen. We will sometimes hasten to say, "Well that won't happen to me." To which the reply comes, "Others said the same thing too." Remember, some things in Scripture are descriptive of events, but not prescriptive as the way to live. When we are taken from this world of sin, God has a golden crown for us! By God's grace let's wait for then to be decked out👍🏽
In my understanding, I believe it's a matter of your heart towards these things. The verse in 1 Peter speaks also about putting on of apparel and the braiding of hair in addition to wearing of gold. So, are we not to wear clothes? Of course not, our dressing should be modest. Therefore, if my heart is set on having 6000 pairs of shoes and a new outfit for every day of the year then clearly something is wrong and my heart is set on acquiring things. So, I do not believe a doctrine should be made on not wearing jewelry entirely and ignore the other items mentioned in the verse. We cannot be selective. If wearing excessive jewelry becomes a weight in your walk with God then lay it aside. The Holy Spirit will guide you in all truth.

It just goes on and on for unlimited issues if we chose them one by one to question based on how we feel about something.
Once we insert “our understanding” where there is a clear “thus saith the Lord”, let us be aware that it never ends up well. What is the function of jewelry today besides narcissism, or focusing on self. What is the purpose of an earring? Nose ring? Brow ring? Finger ring? Necklaces? Bracelets, etc. it is to “adorn” the body and to make self the focus.
Is there any greater assault on God than to focus on me rather than Him? The day shall come when these things will no longer matter, till then, let us use our time and resources on what really matters, the precious Word of God.
I believe is your heart, your obsession towards something. Some ppl have on a simple earring and that's that they are not obsess with it. Reason being for me saying is your heart towards it is because some people are obsess with cars, house etc the bible speak about houses and cars but it is still wrong to be obsess over something hence the reason I said is your heart towards things of this world.
At the end of the day let holy spirit be our guide and ask father God about it.

Job was given rings and silver as gifts and he is known as one of the three righteous men. The father of the prodical son gave him a ring when he returned. Baby Jesus was given gold as a gift. God says silver and gold are mine. In heaven we are going to be awarded with treasures of precious stones.
When God created Luficer he used precious stones. Abrahams servant gave Rebekah jewelery of gold, silver and to rhe brother and mother.

I am not an Adventist, but have had tremendous respect for Doug's scholarship. I do however I think that he has mishandled these passages, since the context of both passages do not deal with the jewelry issue.

I can slightly agree, however, it really is bothersome that you pointed out all these scriptures on jewelry, BUT DIDN'T mention Isaiah 61:10
"I will greatly rejoice in the Jehovah, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation, he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels."
So we can read clearly a bride wore jewels.
And even more the scripture where God says to Isreal in Ezekiel 16:10-14
"I clothed you also with broidered work, and shod you with badgers' skin, and I girded you about with fine linen, and I covered you with silk. I decked you also with ornaments, and I put bracelets on your hands, and a chain on your neck. I put a jewel on your forehead, and earrings in your ears, and a beautiful crown on your head. were you decked with gold and silver; and your raiment was of fine linen, and silk, and broidered work; you did eat fine flour, and honey, and oil: and you were exceeding beautiful, and you did prosper into a kingdom. renown went forth among the heathen for your beauty: for it was perfect through my comeliness, which I had put on you, said the Lord Jehovah." I think these scriptures are quite relevant and feel they should have been mentioned as well.
Honestly I have questioned jewelry. I do wear a couple rings and maybe a necklace every now and then. I have felt a conviction more on earrings. However, I do not think it's going against God if you wear jewelry. Maybe if your decked out in costly Jewelry like 1 Timothy 2:9 states. But if worn modestly I don't feel a big conviction.

Yes we will wear crowns in heaven there is nothing wrong with jewelry in and of itself but here on earth it is a distraction and sometimes its not a distraction for the wearer but for the observer. Really they are not necessary to your life or your salvation.

I think that making “ not wearing jewelry” a doctrine , as something you HAVE to do , is misleading. This verse just tells us to be modest and to not seek being praised by our looks, but to reflect Jesus with what’s in our hearts. Remember when Jesus told their decuples this?:
“The food you put into your mouth doesn't make you unclean and unfit to worship God. The bad words that come out of your mouth are what make you unclean.””

For me is not what you put in your body or how you dress what makes you unclean , but what comes from your heart, and the reasons why you choose to dress like that. The verse about the modesty is just a guide for us to be modest and not to seek attention, but in any way is to make it into a doctrine, and being focusing on it like if your salvation depends on it. We know the sin comes from the heart. Being modest is not all about the appearance.

Expensive clothes, like the ones the Proverbs 31 woman wears, expensive jewelry and expensive perfume are alright to wear. Read the whole Bible, not just bits and pieces to justify a crazy theory. If you look like a Christmas tree instead of a person, maybe you should lay off the jewelry, other than that wear whatever you like.
@@heliaalves9062 taking that incident about the expensive perfume out of context.. that was an issue about worship when Judas was saying to sell it for profit to give to the poor. Nothing to do with Jesus' adornment. If you listen to this video, you'll find adornments relate to pride. You'll also hear the Pastor share bible texts citing "no" adornments. God wants us to cover ourselves with humility instead. The humble, meek and obedient will inherit the Kingdom of heaven.
When in doubt, seek God's word.

Pastor, God gave the children of Israel jewelry: Ezekiel 16 speaks about that and other verses. Modest jewelry wearing is acceptable. Whats unacceptable is celebrating CHRISTMAS Sir.
