I have no debt. My home is paid off.
I’m retired. I have a ton of money in the bank. I eat at home. Life is good.
Great job! Live your best life.

I came to say the same thing! We make $120K combined, no kids, no debt, home is paid off, I'm 50 yo. People who live like this are fools and live in a bubble.

"Not caring what people think is a super power". Jade hit the nail on the head with that one.
This is why when people say that someone can't be broke when they make a lot of money, I bring up situations like these.
They arent broke, the rental has 100k+ equity in it and i suppose the house paying for itself
Their problem is the personal and student loan, just reduce the lifestyle a bit they are fine
It is called rich broke folks.

We are on track to be debt free in the next 6 months, about 50% of our debt is from helping support her parents through those tough times.
When it happens I'm going to see if we can both take the day off to celebrate, plan a fun day at the beach or something.
Keep at it - it will be worth it in every sense. Hope your mrs gets the help she needs
I can totally see why your wife is depressed, with all the loss she has endured. That being said she needs to go to counseling and claw outta the depression so she can fix the finances and not have that pressure on her too. I wish you guys all the best
I wish I would go into debt for someone else. Especially when they can plan just like you guys did...
I am so sorry to hear about your wife’s loss. I am where she is. My only son died (allergic reaction), four years later my husband died (cancer) then two years later, my father died (Covid), my brother died (accident) last month, and my mother (dementia) is now in hospice. It’s been a day to day struggle to keep above water. It is very tough. I am in therapy and participate in my church’s grief share program.

stay at home wife with no kids is telling you how to spend the money.... telling him to house another family while they are broke... i bet this girl doesnt even cook.
That’s HIS side of the family. I have a hard time believing he wasn’t heavily involved in the decision to buy another house and move them into the old one. They were all raised with a certain attitude about money and now he’s had an awakening the rest of the family hasn’t. That sucks. I learned the hard way not to mix money and family after I sold a truck to my uncle. Never again.
I agree his wife enjoys the lifestyle, and she's basically using him as her work mull.
I also believe they are likely similar in spending habits. He didn't marry the woman that would say "we don't need that" or "that's too expensive". He married the woman that enjoys the expensive things because he does. Both people usually egg each other so he can try to blame her all he wants, he was/is complicit in all these decisions and likely told her "we have it". Well, now you might just lose it.

Not caring what other people think is a life skill that is a sign of maturity. And it’s not just about money. It’s about all of your life choices and values. When you take on a mindset that what other people think of you is none of your business, your life improves dramatically.
The moment this guy gives that talk to his wife, she's going to divorce him, take the kids, make him pay for child support, and alimony.
And he knows it. Poor fella
I don’t agree with this advice. If they sell the rental and use that money to pay off everything except the primary mortgage, they will have a ton of extra cash flow and start spending it on ridiculous things and going into more debt. It’s not that much different than a debt consolidation where you run up credit cards afterwards.
If the rental is turning a decent positive cash flow, then they should hold onto it. What they need to do is budget and control their spending. If they tighten their belts for a year, they could easily knock off a large chunk of that consumer debt. That will also get them in the routine of budgeting, which they desperately need. I think mainly the wife needs to feel the burn and restricted spending for a while to be ready to move forward.
Selling the rental won’t fix their mindset.
I’ll pay off 204.5k in debt this November!

He drives a $40,000 car himself. They dug this hole together and he admitted that. The problem is he has woken up and she hasn’t. She is being the person he married. This is what happens a lot of times when people marry young and once person “grows up” and the other doesn’t.
