- When the GEONWORKS Frog Mini came across my radar I was very hesitant while also curious. As you probably know by now, I am a big fan of foamy sounding boards. However, its seems as of late I've been deviating from that course with a bit of a fixation on the GEONWORKS F1-8X. So you can imagine that when the opportunity came to check out a GEONWORKS board for half the price I jumped right on its. Today we're going to build the Frog Mini with my new Melody switch, made by Aflion, and top it with some Domikey Miami Nights. Lets slap on our colorful Zoot suit with our favorite shades as we work our way through this build, shall we?

I love how this looks, a little pingy in sound but otherwise sounds quite nice as well, those switches and keycaps just look so nice.
This little guy is definitely poppin' in the aesthetics department. Going to do a force break on it later this week. I didn't notice any ping IRL but the mic definitely picked up a bit. Thanks for checking out the vid!

Thanks, just got an F1-8X and want a 60%. How would you say it compares sound wise? I am debating this vs QK60, as both seem to suit clacky profile I'm after.
The Frog Mini is leaps and bounds nicer sounding than the QK60, imo. I've tried multiple similar configurations on the QK60 and just couldn't get a sound profile I enjoyed. To be fair, though, my QK60 has the acrylic top piece.

one thing I've noticed in a lot of frog mini builds is that the spacebar sounds a little dull but this ones a little different Is there anything different with the pcb and stabs than "regular" builds?
Its likely the switch. Alot of people like to stick to Cherry switches on Geon boards for some reason and the bottom/top rows can sound quite different than the alphas due to the mounting. If the spacebar is muted they're likely using a non-long pole switch. I find long pole switches can often elevate a spacebar that's sounding flat.
I've heard people tell me the spacebar slaps on this. But one complaint I heard is that it gets a lot of reverberations from the desk, so I would isolate it as much as possible with 1 to 2 deskmats if possible.
Interesting and good looking board, but I couldn't get over the layout myself. HHKB is fine, but I need a Windows key, and it doesn't work well for Mac OS either.
That's fair. Heck, it even take alot of getting used to on Windows. I used the QK60 for a few days and when I switched back to normal layout it took some time to adjust back, lol. An F1-8X might be in the cards after all!
@@punkshoo I'm in IT too, and work from home on a Mac. There are way too many keyboard shortcuts that I use to not have all the keys. Fortunately, my Cidoo v65 and Everglide SK68 do a great job for work and play!

Did you have any issues getting it set up in VIA?
I did not when I set it up before the recent VIA update
did you try another spacebar? i find there's a weird clunk in it, but i also found the same thing when i used a domikey spacebar; i actually switched it up with an ABS spacebar on my QK65 and found it had a way better sound.
I did not. I like the sound of the spacebar just fine. Also, DMK Miami Nights is ABS.
@@punkshoo yeah i was mentioning i used an abs spacebar knowing that so the comparison wasn't between PBT and ABS. Something about the domikey spacebar's shape is different.
Ah I gotcha. I feel like something with the ABS blend DMK uses is different period. They definitely have a deeper sound than GMK or DCX.
