The biggest thing to happen to iPhone since iPhone.
Creating an entirely new design meant inventing entirely new technology
When we envisioned the new iPhone, we landed on a remarkably thin and light design. But it's nearly impossible to make a device so thin and so light without sacrificing features or performance.
We could have taken the easy way out and designed something more reasonable and less remarkable. But we didn't.
If the technology didn't exist, we invented it. If a component wasn't small enough, we re-imagined it. If convention was standing in the way, we left it behind. The result is iPhone 5: the thinnest, lightest, fastest iPhone ever.
iPhone 5 is just 7.6 millimeters thin. To make that happen, Apple engineers had to think small, component by component. They created a nano-SIM card, which is 44 percent smaller than a micro-SIM.
They also developed a unique cellular solution for iPhone 5. The conventional approach to building LTE into a world phone uses two chips - one for voice, one for data. On iPhone 5, both are on a single chip.
The intelligent, reversible Lightning connector is 80 percent smaller than the 30-pin connector.
The 8MP iSight camera has even more features - like panorama and dynamic low-light mode - yet it's 20 percent smaller.
And the new A6 chip is up to 2x faster than the A5 chip but 22 percent smaller. Even with so much inside, iPhone 5 is 20 percent lighter and 18 percent thinner than iPhone 4S.
It`s our thinnest display ever. And it`s the first of its kind.
Making a thinner, lighter iPhone meant even the display had to be thinner. Apple engineers accomplished that by creating the first Retina display with integrated touch technology.
Which means instead of a separate layer of touch electrodes between display pixels, the pixels do double duty - acting as touch-sensing electrodes while displaying the image at the same time.
With one less layer between you and what you see on iPhone 5, you experience more clarity than ever before. All on a display that's 30 percent thinner than before.
iPhone 5 is made with a level of precision you'd expect from a finely cafted watch -- not a smartphone.
Never before has this degree of fit and finish been applied to a phone. Take the glass inlays on the back of iPhone 5, for instance. During manufacturing, each iPhone 5 aluminum housing is photographed by two high-powered 29MP cameras.
A machine then examines the images and compares them against 725 unique inlays to find the most precise match for every single iPhone.
Look at iPhone 5 and you can't help but notice the exquisite chamfer surrounding the display.
A crystalline diamond cuts this beveled edge. It's what gives iPhone 5 its distinctive lines. Fitting for a phone so brilliant.

During the assembly process, each iPhone 5 aluminum housing is photographed by two high-powered 29MP cameras. A machine then compares the images with 725 uniquely cut inlays to find a precise match.
- Sapphire Crystal
Although the surface of the iSight camera is as clear as glass, it's not made of glass. It's actually sapphire crystal, whose hardness is second only to diamond on the scale of transparent materials. That means the surface of the lens is far less likely to scratch.

- A crystalline diamond is used to cut the chamfers of iPhone 5. This process gives the beveled edge its beautiful sheen.

This was my first phone. I remember being the coolest person in my year at school back in 2012. Lucky the iPhone releases in store on my birthday every year. Still miss this phone sometimes. My XS Max just doesn’t compare to this square design.

I’m not dissing apple I like apple I actually am texting on my iPhone X right now. It’s a good phone btw but if we really wanna call a phone “beyond the competition” those companies need to brainstorm other ideas they can fit in a tiny space. Of ex: I been thinking phones have wireless charging but it’s not very wireless because you need the pad to use it. How about inventing a way where your iPhone or Android can charge actually wireless. Just go from one room to another and your phone is charging. That’s pretty innovative

Oftentimes truly great designs take time for people to really appreciate. I remember back when the 5 was announced so many people made fun of it, but now it's remembered as one of the greatest iPhone designs.
It represented the peak of "Classic iPhone", continuing with its 5c/5s/SE clones. iPhone 6 changed the vibe, and iPhone X changed it again.

this might be an unpopular opinion, but it seems like this might still be their ideology: "Care less about reinventing the phone and instead, perfect what we've made." They have some of the best battery life and efficiency, fastest ARM processors, continually high-rated cameras, best smartphone video, all in an older-seeming package.

The iPhone 5 was my very first iPhone and I really miss that time. Such a great phone.
The quality built of this phone completely exceeded my expectations. The camera is absolutely extraordinary. The pictures are very sharp and the colors are so natural that when I film with it, I feel like I'm filming with my own eyes. I do not want to sound like a fan-boy but you just got to appreciate the fact that this phone really looks like a piece of art. P.S I'm also a proud owner of an HTC One, a phone with an extraordinary built quality, which tilted the balance, when I was deciding between it, and a GS4. And another thing that I feel mentioning.... Apple has one of the best, if not, the best marketing divisions in the world. These guys could sell toothpicks, and they would still be appreciated for that. Put an "apple" logo on'em and they will sell like hotcakes.

I remember when the iphone 5 debuted. It was too lightweight, and felt more like a toy to me.
My first ever iPhone, I still adore it. I was blown away when I first got it for Christmas in 2014 after coming from a non-touchscreen Blackberry. :)
The love they put into the design makes me so emotional.
This is what i absolutely love about apple. The time and effort they put into their devices to make them perfect. other companies just design and release a phone and thats it, it never gets updates after a year.

The thing is back during the time before iOS 7 came out, people hated the skeuomorphic design and were complaining and wanted a new design and then Apple released iOS 7 in 2013 and then people started complaining about it being flat and hating changes and wanted the old skeuomorphic design back to iOS.

The nostalgia this injects in me, hits me so hard that it brings me to tears. Living in the Bay Area my whole life and seeing this, I knew I had to make it my first phone. My first apple product being an iPod touch with the stainless steel back. I love this design so much. Can’t wait for my next phone to be of the same design(almost) the iPhone 14 Pro. currently on the 11 model(not fond of the roundness)

This was my very first iPhone ever. I had it for the full two years. When it was paid off I took off the case and for some reason it was durable af.
I dropped it on hard floor tiles and it slid screen face down and all I picked it up it only had a few scratches. I had no temper glass on there btw.

I've used it for 5 years and loved it all along : light, reliable and very respectable battery life. Gave it to my daughter and she still uses it in 2019.

I still have this phone. One in black and one in white. Both with original boxes also and used accessories. They're running iOS 10.3.4 now but still great little iPhones with a great design. Best designed iPhone, even in 2020!
