    It's really interesting point that you make about the bareknuckle as well, I was considering those pickups at some point.

      Kaosware more than any other piece of gear out there I just cannot understand the appeal OUTSIDE of djent players. I mean, they are PERFECT for that genre, but everything else just sounds so subdued. I've tried Nailbombs, Juggarnauts, Cold Sweats, Aftermaths, Emeralds, painkillers, and Miracle Mans, and I just haven't found ANYTHING that is appetizing at all. Granted I haven't tried War Pigs and everyone says that if there was ever a BKP I would love, it's that...but...experiences up to this point do not leave me holding my breath.

      thanks for the feedback!
      Did you get a chance to try out Seymour Duncan Nazgul & Sentient ? I think those pickups can satisfy "djen't player and more straightforward metal. Those are the ones I have on my Schecter Keith Merrow

      ArnoldPlaysGuitar I owned the ceramic war pigs and had them in a mahogany bodied ibanez. Very thick and chunky, balls for days, but lacking in his mids to highs for attack and pinch harmonics. What pickups do you find ideal for brutal tones. Been eyeing the d-activators or a lundgren m7 of which I did find chunky with good attack

    • @ViktorVR
      @ViktorVR 7 лет назад

      Try Something whit Alico 8 or a Hot Alnico 5 , Ceramics have a high output but lack many other things I think Bare Knuckle have the option of magnets like I don't knoy the PAINKILLERS you can have it Cramic or Alnico , may be a Seymour Duncan or Dimarzio Blaze, many brands and many models can do de job and don't need to be ultra expensive (Lundgren)

      ArnoldPlaysGuitar I’ve had two pairs of AlNiCo Warp it’s in two of my Gibson V’s and they’re amazing for doom metal. Deep and heavy with a smooth top that is clear but not too bright, driving mid’s and seems to work great with higher gain drive and thick fuzz without being too muddy. They also clean up really well which is nice because I use a single channel Matamp cranked so my only cleans come from backing off the guitar’s volume.

    It doesn't matter whether you ground it on the pot or the copper foil, it doesn't give you any advantages in an electrical sense. My guess is that they thought that wiring it to the the foil would make future repairs less messy. If you need to change a pot then you have to remove the solder and then solder it to the new pot. Also the wires might get broken or pulled off if you take the back plate off regularly to mess with the electronics.

      I have never in my life seen grounding to cavity shielding. That’s ridiculous and weird. Unless somebody had been tinkering with the guitar themselves after buying it and did that. Even then I think most people understand grounding to a pot lol. Have you ever seen a wiring diagram showing ground to cavity shielding! Lol doesn’t mean it won’t function the same it’s just odd. In my opinion.

      ArnoldPlaysGuitar I found a written review somewhere where they talked about the same wood shrinkage problems yours had. The back of the neck on their model shrunk slightly because the oils in the woods dried out. It was all in the back of the neck so they smoothed it out just by sanding it a little. They had other build quality complaints similar to yours, too.

  • @cappy781

    Nothing wrong with the pickups, you just have to adjust the amp and use more gain.

    • @ArnoldPlaysGuitar
      @ArnoldPlaysGuitar  7 лет назад +4

      Gustav Gjerstad I'm using high-gain profiles with the gain nearly maxed, and I'm plugging the Direct Out into the Line In on my interface with is giving a stronger DI signal than through the mic inputs. In many of my other videos, you'll notice a trend of folks complaining about the levels peaking, and it is because of how my setup was. This is the last video that I recorded using the Direct signal into the Line In so for this video, nothing was changed at all as far as the recording method was concerned and yet it still sounds weak as hell. Definitely the dogshit pickups.

    Copper leaf is a common way to shield a guitar. I do it to most of my guitars. Most companies used to shield both cavities but have stopped for some reason. Today most companies only shield the pickup cavity but not the volume+tone pod cavity. Believe it or not, aluminum foil is just as effective at shielding as copper leaf. Many would argue this fact, but all you need to do is take a sheet of copper and aluminum and compare the conductivity. They're almost identical.
    If you're using active pickups like Blackouts or any EMG, shielding the volume/tone pod cavity isn't that big of a deal as long as the pickup cavity is shielded (usually done with a special paint). Since most guitarists do not have this kind of paint, use leaf. Its super easy to do. There are youtube videos showing how to do it.....otherwise the guitar tech will charge you anywhere from $90-$180. It takes 20 minutes.

    As to your comment the guitar "not being resonant": While the additional thin layers of different woods on several Skervesen guitars look stunning, I have always wondered whether putting so much different pieces of wood together might deteriorate the tone. Supposedly there is a reason why cheaper guitars are made of a higher number of chunks of wood compared to more expensive guitars?
    I've visited both Maynones and Skervesen. Both where very friendly and undertook some effort to show me their product range. At that time I was thinking of ordering one of their guitars. Seeing their facilities was somehow a little disillusioning, especially at Skervesen. From my experience producing excellent quality requires an adequate environment. I like the Skervesen designs (e.g. I found the Swan to be a very ergonomic design) and I'm still thinking about getting one. For a custom made guitar the price points are very attractive in my opinion. It's just that I'm concerned that I might be disappointed when I finally receive the instrument I have ordered. Your review strengthend this concerns. This is why I'm currenly rather looking out for a preowned Skerv where you can be sure of what you get for your money.

    The Nailbomb pickup set was meant to be more of a Thrash Metal kind of pickup, but if you want a good Metal pickup for stuff like Death Metal and other styles, go with the War Pig.

    you must've gotten a lemon skervy mate, i own a skervesen raptor and i've had absolutely no quality issues, mine is about the same age as this one, albeit i have other pickups and other wood choices. i know that mine was baked and dried for some time before it was turned in to an instrument as i requested a slightly lower moisture level. i do "the djent thing" so the well-articulated tone is pretty much what i'd want. i also had my selector set closer to my hand and not behind the volume knob, to make it easier to change, took a bit of getting used to, but i no longer have any issues with that either =)

    I think some companies build to the customer. If you are a well known person or have some level of influence on potential customers you will get a better built guitar. If you are just some poor working fool who nobody knows you will get whatever they feel like sending you. I am speaking from experience as I spent a lot of money on a guitar that was probably only worth half of what I paid for it and had to wait for six months to get it. Thanks Arnold for not being afraid to say the truth about some of these manufacturers.

    Mind blown about the Bareknuckles. We just recorded a brutal sounding song with the Miracle Mans, and Luc Lemay from Gorguts uses the Aftermath bridge and he had the best metal tone I've ever heard on their latest release. I was having the same feelings you have about the Miracle Mans until we recorded this new track, we dialed in an absolutely disgusting tone.
    But I can very clearly hear in the video why you don't like them. It could be a number of things, but man once I got my Blackhawks/Miracle Mans dialed in my setup, there was no going back.
    Also according to the Website, Blackhawks or War Pigs sound like what you're looking for.

    thanks for the review was curious about these.
    It reminds me in ways of a koa-body carvin DC135 I had in the 90s.
    The fretsprout is a bummer, but may be unavoidable in some regions even if you kiln-dry. The sealing ability of the finish becomes more important than a few% of moisture content.

Also what do you think of fanned fret guitars in general? pretty much no stores near me have a fanned fret and if they do its a guitar center (they just wont take it down off the top rack). do they play nicer than a non fan fret and do you think itd be worth buying a fanned fret guitar even if i havnt tried one yet?

    Hey really nice review as usual buddy! One thing I learned to look at from your reviews: the fret work, I got obsessed with it too LOL!
    What's the price range for this instrument though? Maybe you mentioned it in the video and I missed it.
    I think it's a detail worth knowing, because if it was a $700 guitar, then it's definitely a wanna-buy... if it's in the couple-of-thousand-bucks area, I'd probably go for some other custom shop given the shortcomings you brought up - like a Kiesel, I'm really digging those guitars lately.

    Thanks for the reviews - definitely appreciate someone who isn't afraid to give a dissenting opinion on a popular product. Question though - why didn't you measure the bridge? Rather than saying it 'appears' to be mis-mounted, why not just take a ruler and measure each side to the edge of the neck? Then you'd know for sure whether it was aligned straight or not.

    @danbalcom8510 7 лет назад

    Something you said in this video is incredibly inaccurate. "Kiln dried" wood will not eliminate the popping out fret ends issue. Its an issue for ALLLL instruments involving frets. Kiln drying is just drying wood faster than natural drying. Thats all it is. Wood collects and releases moisture with the environment its in, causing it to swell and shrink. This WILL happen with wood if its kiln dried or naturally dried. Some necks do it, some dont. You example was agile, which if im not mistaken is made in the same factory as dean, ibanez, epiphone and sterling guitars. So using ibanez as an example since i have played more of those than anything else, some have been perfectly fine, and some had the frets sticking out of the neck at least 1/32nd of an inch. It happens, its one of those things that you just take it to a local luthier or repair guy and have it remedied, once thats done, it really shouldnt be an issue ever again unless the neck shrinks again even further.
    The only way wood wont shrink and expand is if its "roasted" or "torified", which is the same as kiln drying, but at much higher temperatures. Think of it like a toaster oven for wood. In this proccess, all of the moisture in the wood is evaporated out as well as the internal structures of the wood are ruptured and it makes the material far less prone to environmental changes, or it may eliminate the issue all together. Past that, composite necks are the way to go if you never want sharp fret ends to happen.

    ebony is not a good wood for a fretboard. It dires out pretty quickly, that caused the frets to be sharp. Skervesen is known for an awesome fretwork. Probably if the owner called Skervesen they would repair it, even for free

    • @ArnoldPlaysGuitar
      @ArnoldPlaysGuitar  7 лет назад

      0record0 while it's true that Ebony is a very dry wood, it's a matter of drying the wood properly before treating it and working with it. After that, it's a matter of proper maintenance, just like Rosewood. Let it soak up tons of oil, and if the problem persists, its less about the wood and more about the methods used.

    Hey man I enjoy your video's. what brand strings do you use on your guitars and different gauges?

    • @ArnoldPlaysGuitar
      @ArnoldPlaysGuitar  7 лет назад +1

      A variety of different ones. Honestly just whatever I feel like using at the time, but I always try to get gauges for the lower strings that are a bit heavier and therefore a bit tighter than the treble side. For instance, if I was in D standard, I'd be playing a 10-52 set. 7-string, every so often I find a set that's around 10-62 or 10-65, so I'll grab that. And for 8-string, right now I really like Ernie Ball's 9-80 set. But I change stuff up a lot and I don't tend to prefer one brand over another. I kinda feel like the differences between string companies are blown way outta proportion.

    I dunno what's up with Ibanez, but all of my Indonesian Jacksons sound and feel amazing.
    Also, as far as the grounding goes, it should be grounded to the pots AND THEN to the shielding as well. I won't be buying one of these anytime soon. Bad grounding can literally kill you if you touch a mic and the guitar at the same time.
    Being that this poor excuse for an axe is only grounded to the shielding, that means that the ground signal never makes it to the output jack, and even if it's grounded to the foil and then to the jack, it's still gonna be a shitty connection, which means it might as well not even be there.

    Well, it is just natural materials, not something engineered like artisides.mightve been a dead piece of wood. We've all played mahogany bodied guitars, and they all have a little different voice.
    As for the ground, it is grounded, but doing that makes them easier to come off. It is soldered to copper FOIL, after all.

    "it just doesn't have that bite and that growl that..." - you'd better learn how to dial in a amp. With todays amps ESPECIALLY kempers/axe etc. you can dial in any sound with any growl you want for any pickup. Just because those pickups are different in output than other pickups you use doesn't mean, they cant sound like you want... really disappointed by that non-scientific statement, dude. That just sounds really subjective to me.
    Those pickups may have other magnets in them than your other pickups have. Different flux densities lead to different inductive outputs with the same amplitude of string vibration.
    There we come to the next problem:
    you talk about the guitar being not "acoustically resonant".
    - electric guitars SHOULD NOT be acoustically resonant. Every major acoustic resonance means that energy travels from the strings into the body and induce oscillation in larger surfaces leading to sonic transmission.
    The energy that travels from the string into the body CAN NOT be recorded by the magnetic pickups, because this energy has already dissipated into the body and as well into acoustic sound.
    The "wrong bridge alignment" is also a very bad explanation for the lack of "resonance". Resonance (what you mean) is extremely complex and a LOT of factos are contributing to it. A little millimeter (or less - we don't have exact measurements) of bridge misalignment won't lead to major resonance difference.
    It's also interesting that you look for a grounding but can't find it. Were there any problems with grounding like humming? I don't understand why you're searching for it if there was no problem from the beginning? Seems not so unbiased to me but more like desperate fault search from skervesen.
    And I think by stressing those little problems so much you really distort reality. How about bringing the things skervesen did GOOD into a time-related context to the things they did not so good? I think then this review should be 10 times longer with you just talking about the good things in those extra 9 times of video.
    No good review here. In a review one is adressing the good as well as the bad and the ugly. (the ugly would for example be the misaligned bridge - bad the little protruding fret ends, easy to fix btw - and good a lot of things like overall craftmanship, looks, weight etc...
    Things i would have wished for in a guitar review:
    Talking about important things for playability:
    string action, fret level, nut, bridge, neck-bow (or straightness)
    Electronic functions should be measured by using equipment. For output, frequencies etc...
    Most else can be measured by ruler or caliper gauge. If you want to review high quality guitars please do high quality reviews with ACTUAL measurements and no subjective statements that tend to bias peoples' opinions.
    Cheers.

      Aran Bülgür I played this guitar. Arnold was far nicer than he should have been. This is a terrible guitar for the money. His uses "resonance" when he means sustain. The sound dissipates almost immediately when you play a note. This is due to poor wood selection and the misaligned bridge.

    Your lead tone is terrible . Place some reverb room. 10% mix. And some delay. 470 time. 30% feedback. Mids of amp at 65% . Presence at 50%. Overdrive gain. 5%. Mid at 55.high at 50. Chorus 30% mix add some compressor at 80% on lead. For the riff ad some flanger at 30% after the chain and some 8ctave at 25% mix. Makes the riff sounds nice.

    It sounds like straight up garbage. Skervesen has always been a lackluster company. I think they’re over priced garbage. for that kind of money I would get a nice carvin. I’ve never liked bareknuckles either, they sound bad. I had juggernauts and I hated them. Also to return them is a pain in the ass. I’m guessing they get them for cheap in Europe. That’s probably the o lot reason why all those builder use those pickups. They’re the emg of Europe. I do like the customer service from emg tho. More professional. I wouldn’t trust a boutique guitar builder tho. They’re a hit or miss in terms of quality.
