Glad you enjoy this guitar! I was very pleasantly surprised by my Schecter 9 string as well. Wish I could have the looks of the Hellraiser but the scale length of this one haha
Hey Its you!
It's you.
question - what gauge is the 9th string? surely its gotta be a bass string gauge! :)
@Vincent Hippler cheers! :)
Still the comment of the decade.
I bought this guitar from Arnold a little over a month ago. It is awesome. It sounds sick with the electronics upgraded. It is butter smooth and is very easy to play for what looks like a beast of a guitar. He set it up and threw in an extra set of strings.
5/5. Thanks man!
Yeah schecter is definitely a good brand. I don't get the hate people have for them sometimes, quality and features far exceed the price point.
who on earth hates on schecter? they make great guitars. i bought a hellraiser special back in 2011 and haven't managed to convice myself that i need a new six string since then...
givemeajackson
I’ve seen people hate schecters just because of the veneers they use on cheaper guitars. That makes no sense to me xd schecters have been the best guitars i’ve put my hands on and i hope to get one myself sometime
I just bought a C-1 on sale for 400 bucks and it's made of mahogany, is a neck through, has emgs and not crappy off brand stock pickups, like its a crazy value for the money
I keep hearing "on a korean guitar!!" by everyone but most koreans are built better with more eye to detail than any Indo/chinese/mex I've ever played :P
Cykk_ CSGO Believe it or not, that's actually why I kept saying that. I'm a little tired of people dismissing certain companies are certain lines because they're made in a certain place. It may sound like I don't dig Korean models, but I love them. My favorite guitar I've ever owned is a Korean Schecter C-1 Exotic.
Cykk_ CSGO For out sourced manufacturing: Japan is best, then Korea, Taiwan, Philippines/Indonesia, Mexican, China, imo
@@CoolGuyAtlas now days Japan Indo-korea Mexico Taiwanese China Vietnam
In my experience the past years the Korean made guitars are pretty legit made.
I have 2 indo prs guitars and while the cheaper 245 does have some small cosmetic flaws and cracked binding (still plays great) my mark Holcomb 7 string is beautiful and flawless.
One of the best intros I've seen.
Honestly, I love the bat inlays. Dots are boring as shit to me.
I like them jsut wish they stayed in feet and didn't go a bit into the next
All guitars, or at least guitars above $200 or $250, should just have no markers and just have side dots. You can get vinyl stickers for about $10. But how often do you look at the fret board? It looks way more appealing blank.
The abalone fret markers on Schecter Damiens are very nice though.
I’d rather have no inlays
Lance Olson moar dots
I actually love the bat inlays, makes the guitar unique
"What does the frets look like" - Arnold
ARR0WMANC3R 'unequivocably'- Arnold
You’re describing the old blackjack atx series. No inlays and aged yellow binding.
Isnt this what mick gordon used for the DOOM soundtrack?
yes
My local guitar had Damien Platinum 9 and their special limited edition Hellraiser for $100 more. I got the Hellraiser because they didn't have the bat inlays. It looks like this one, but with cross inlays and separate tone knobs for the bridge and neck pickups.
i personally prefer the damien platinum. the bats are si sick
Cant beat Schecters quality for the money!
PatientMental
In my experience 100% correct, my rg1527z is way less polished than a 800 dollar hellraiser 7
You can say that again, man!!
Schecter Hellraisers are fucking King, man.
Cheap Schecter > Gibson
ibanez man, thats where you get quality for the money, honestly tried out few schecters and they seem pretty dope but quality wise I would expect a bit more even sound wise for 450 pounds uk u can get ibanez with dimarzios while schecters mainly have the diamond pickups which atleast for me dont get the job done that well, they sound quite muddy for me.
that song you played on it sounded epic
Sweetwater is such an awesome brand. I love supporting them and they care about their customers more than anyone else.
Actually I like the bat inlays. Schecter makes awesome guitars.
Hey Arnold. The track you used to demo this cigar was one of your best IMHO. If that guitar inspired those riffs, then you should definitely keep that one around for awhile. I'm thinking about a getting budget 8 string, so maybe I'll give Schecter a good hard look based on your recommendation. I'd be inclined to try the Damien Platinum 8 with the same specs as yours, but i don't know if I can get past those inlays. They don't ruin the guitar's appearance, but they do cheapen it a little. Anyway, Good work brother!
HEY MAN JUST WANTED TO GIVE A SHOUT OUT IN ALL CAPS CUZ MY KEYBOARD DONE BROKE (NOT YELLING), NOT ONLY ARE YOU A FANTASTIC PLAYER BUT YOUR REVIEWS ARE VERY CONCISE AND TO THE POINT. GOOD STUFF MAN.
When I saw Arnold playing that guitar, it quickly reminded me of Mick Gordon playing "E1M1/At Doom's Gate." And yes, Mick Gordon did use that guitar before he ended up selling it away.
That hipshot bridge is where it's at! I have one on my 7 string Schecter.
Schecter didn't always put bat inlays on their damiens. I specifically tracked down a Damien Elite 8 from 2012 just to avoid the bat inlays in favor of gothic crosses. they look insane, and the guitar plays like a dream!
Agree Sweetwater is great- they did a fine job on setting up my guitars that I bought from them. Would not hesitate to buy again from them if they offer the one I want in the future.
loved the review for the guitar but you got me with the beer enthusiasm at the end.
"This is an amazing guitar"
"Yo this beer though!"
Schecters fret work on lower models owns Ibanez top shelf imo
WholeLottaBulldog
Yes, my ibanez rg 1527z is way less optimized than a hellraiser 7
I Shred Prestige
not in my experience, I even owned a schwecter before
I can concur on the frets being flat. I have a Jeff Loomis 7FR model and thought the previous owner may have just sanded the frets down and didn't bother re-crowning them, but looked into it and it turns out their cheaper models just have flat ass frets. They're just scratchy and annoying on bends. I find I can still play with a light touch no problem, but vibrato and bends are made more difficult.
I Shred Prestige
My cousin plays a hellraiser 7 its not as you described it, maybe it really depends on where you get it from or something who knows.
I believe you though
Thats terrible my dudes, feel sorry for ya
Agree with the Sweetwater thing. They sent me a ton of pics first, and stayed in constant contact. Bought an expensive tele from them. Was pretty impressed.
That intro was really sick 🤯
I have the Hellraiser C9: superb beast 28 inch scale, only thing that could better it would be fanned fret.
Great channel Arnold, really appreciate the attention to detail and honesty.
Sweetwater is amazing. Only ordered a few things from them but their customer service is absolutely top notch
I was wondering when you'll purchase a nine string guitar since you had your eight string AND ten string guitars. I'm glad that you really like it a lot.
Hello, ArnoldPlaysGuitar! I was looking for the Schecter Damien Platinum 9 guitar after I saw it being used in Mick Gordon's 2-part Behind the Music series for DOOM. Upon discovering the and after watching it I am very interested in acquiring this diamond gem for myself, and immediately after watching this unbiased review I am glad and have decided to go for it! Thank you so much for your input. I can't WAIT to play it!
i like what you're doing with the 9 string, and you make it look and sound effortless. i tried a 9 string and was lost and nothing sounded good that i tried, i've only tried 8 string a few times as well but i can appreciate the learning curve involved. great video as always
listened to the song a few times now - fucking awesome job!
Ive been playing schecter guitars since 2005, i have a hellraiser c-7, the first iteration of the jl-7, and a banshee elite 7 fr-s. The quality of every schecter guitar ive ever touched, from the cheapest and most basic to my banshee elite is unmatched. Schecter provides superb quality for not a lot of money. Good review, and i appreciate the love for my favorite brand.
Schecter and PRS are the only brands I’ve never have and issue with sharp fret ends. However I would have to say PRS does a better job on that department
Sweetwater is the bee's knees. Hands down, if you want THE BEST customer service out there, go Sweetwater! Nothing but 10/10 experiences here. I enjoy your vids, but I just can't understand the extreme extended range guitars. The low end sounds like mush... great review though, keep up the beer drinking!
I'm planning to order one of these soon but I don't know what case or padded gig bag to buy to keep it safe when I'm taking it to the shop or a gig because it's just so enormous. Not sure if anyone will see the comment, but I would appreciate an opinion.
I dig the bat inlays, about to purchase the 6 string model, good review, 😎
Definitely shattered my misconception of the necks on Schecters being chunky.
Travis Lausch yeah, definitely the case here.
Schecter made some major changes to neck profiles a few years ago. The necks on the KM and SLS series guitars are crazy comfortable.
ArnoldPlaysGuitar u said u changed the strings, wut string gauges did u put on?
I like the way the Ibanez RG9 sounds with the stock pickups
I've been looking to get into 8 strings for awhile now, and was looking at the schecter platinum 8- your review here put me over the top and I ordered one from sweetwater today.
I thank you sir for your informative and entertaining videos, keep em coming \m/
Thanks for the reviews dude! Very much appreciate the honest opinion! Keep rockin'!
Nice to hear about Sweetwater (love the free candy bags), I recently had a very bad experience with Music123. Will never use them for anything again. I like to spend my hard earned money at places that treat me right! Thanks for posting your videos.
what's up Arnold. Your review was fuckin awesome as usual. I ended up picking up my first seven string a brand new uv70 based on your review of it and it fuckin kills dude. I may be looking into a new schecter now. Thanks for the brutally honest work 🤘
That's gotta be one of the most proper 9 string tones I've heard on youtube yet.
Diggin your channel dude, keep it up.
I have the 8 string version of the damien platinum and I love the hell out of it. One annoyance though is finding 8string packs that are actually made with 28" scale in mind as opposed to 27".
Steven Broka I know this is old but try stringjoy.com they have tons of gauge options from .007 to .90 and I have a 30 inch 9 string and there was still enough strings let to wrap around the post 3 times and cut off the extra string. 👌🏼 I love that company. I just wish they had
.66 .95 and a .105 but oh well. A lot of ppl say .90 is enough for c# anyway I have it tuned to a and it is still good. And if you don't want to try them the ernie ball 8 string heavy bottom set is long enough and the daddario nyxl 8 string set is long enough both are 9-80. Only difference is the 7th string on eb is .64 and the daddario is .60.
Steven Broka and you can make your own custom set. Whether you like a set they offer but just want to change a few strings, go a head. Or just buy the sets the way they are, or make a complete custom set. Its easy. I just started using them 3 string sets ago and I'm not going back.
articulate for a 9 string! as always, your reviews are perfect. thanks for the great work you always do. and I love love love the where schecter put the 3 way switch and volume knob! gonna have my Luther remap my schecter atx that way. and shave the neck a touch. thanks again Arnold!
i've had a schecter hellraiser for like 15 years, that guitar is so sick
I played KM1 that had horrible binding and high frets. I bought a 2017 Stilleto Studio that had a twisted neck out of box. I do love my C1 Hellraiser 7 string, though!
Every now and again I come back and watch this review, I dont know what it is about it but I have to fight the terror within to keep from buying this beast... even though I know I could never put it to proper use and I already have one of those. Thanks for this review.
Unfortunately, that bridge only comes on the 9-string version.
I had the Damien Platinum 8 back in 2013 I believe. It was my second 8 string I'd ever owned. Great guitar! The scale length was just a bit too much for me but boy were the bigger frets nice on thie higher register!
Dam bro that intro was some of the cleanest, tightest, not muddy 9 string tone and jam that ive ever heard.
I usually dislike most 8 and 9 string vids as the tones yuck but yours makes me wanna have a go, and i don't even like Schecters that much.
I'm glad I came across your channel, you covered all the details I'd like
I settled on this 9 string thanks to your review. Keep doing your thing Arnold! \m/
Man, I was trying to figure out what was going on with the fretboard. It looks like some sort of reverse fan or left handed fan frets. Then I saw your fingers turn in to et fingers. Must be the camera.
Hi! A cool review, like the one about Agile Pendulum 10 strings. I come back to this videos from time to time. What can you say about these guitars after a few years?
Damn dude, I forgot how tasty your demo track was. Those EMGs sounded killer and I liked the mixing of low and high notes for those little runs and the solo. Awesome man.
Good lord I love the lead tone you got out of this thing!
Are you sure on those prices? Those are the Hellraiser prices and they’re definitely a step up from the Damiens
I want a guitar that I can tune down to damn near the brown note and have it sound killer. This Damien Platinum 9 is one, the Gretsch G5260 Electromatic Jet Baritone 6 string (would probably have to do a pickup replacement at some point), and the Schecter Hellraiser C-VI baritone are what I am leaning towards (this one I'm unsure about as they come with EMG81s and 89s which are probably better suited for B standard and up as opposed to going down into the lower register of a bass.
I play a lot of rhythym and have several other guitars that I could use to play leads on since my hands aren't that big. I can barely play my Ibanez m80m 8 string. The problem for me isn't large scales but rather getting around a giant neck for small hands. I know this because I have a Schecter 5 string stilleto bass that is 34 inches and have zero problems or cramps on my hands when I play it.
Have you or anyone ever tried out 6 string baritones at the 30 inch scale tuned down to like 8 or even 9 strings? Im curious to know if they would sound as good as the Damien Platinum 9.
Man sweetwater is awesome, I had them looking for a used Mesa Boogie Dual rectifier rack unit for me. They didn't find one, but since they looked I was sold on sweetwater
Excellent review sir! I know this is now 2020 so don't expect a reply, but I have the Hellraiser 8 string Diamond Series & it absolutely obliterates my other guitars. I have since sold my 3 BC Rich & one of my two Ibanez RG550s. I just have my Les Paul (just like the tone now & then) & use my remaining 550 for occasional practice. I hardly ever touch anything other than the Schekter. I thoroughly mirror every comment you have made here - they are top of the production line tree with value for money far surpassing their price point. I had been considering getting a Skervesen or Reever but honestly, I wonder if I'd get my money's worth when I have this damned thing to play on already!!! As for the pick ups, I have EMG 81 / 85 & a single coil in the Ibanez as well & it sounds p*ss poor compared to the 808s. I'm 50 now & LOVE EMGs but totally get your point re the dynamics, think that is why I've kept the Gibson to be honest.
actually the stock pickup in the ibanez rg-9 sounds very well, very well indeed, :)
I have a platinum 8, definitely a nice instrument.
Hows the tension on the high strings? that E in a 30" scale
Destroyer858 it took me a few takes to hit that bend at the beginning of the solo. The high Eb kept breaking. Might have been the strings though, they were in 9-string sets, but when I bought some individual .009s...this is holding. Broke three strings in five minutes at first, but this ones been on for two weeks now and has held up.
I guess that's when fanned frets become a must
That explains it. I've had nothing but issues the few times I've bought Slinky's. The treble strings bust stupidly easily.
ArnoldPlaysGuitar Hey know of any good replacement sets of strings for this guitar? The recommended Ernie balls have a taper that is to short on the 105 and 80, doesn't reach the nut. Labella and Kalium have tapers towards the ball end and the core sits on the saddle. I cut the originals off to swap in some emg909x not thinking this would be a problem.
Flavio Esteban it's a bit on the heavy side lol and the inlays. Aside from that it's perfect. Didn't come set up well, no relief , strings to low lots of buzz. I've set it up perfect not a buzz or hiss. Keeps perfect intonation and tune. It has really good tone. Definitely not thin sounding. I still need to experiment more with the 909x I was even think of custom ordering a blackout for it. The stock 909 works really well in it though.
Good review! I'll have to try the beer too
Diggin the solo👌🏻
Yea bat inlays are dated and tacky. You could always pick up / make something with Neck Illusions to cover it up with a cooler design!
probs my favorite demo song you've ever done. Great sounding axe
Goid on you for your find. Whenever I play anything that has more than 7 strings, I feel like I should be playing a Chapman Stick.
Is the Schecter Damien Platinum 9 still a good guitar in 2023, or are there better alternatives at a comparable price in the meantime?
i'm also pretty happy with Demon7 i purchased last year. quality is very good for a 500 € instrument but on the long run i will change the tuners and pickups.
My very first real guitar was (still have it) a Schecter Damien Platinum 6 string that I bought in 2013.. was $600 back then.. and honestly it's pretty good !
Love the D.R.U.G.S. poster! Wish I had one.
Damn man, your videos keep on getting better and better! :)
Hi Arnold, I know this is probably outside of your usual guitar territory but I would love to see a guitar review of the Phred Deadbolt guitar if you haven't done a review of it yet. Thanks, I love your reviews.
Nice job utilizing all the strings!
Oh man I think those inlays top it off.. Blackjack series is nice too with its simplicity.
Gorgeous!
Do the Hellraiser C-8. That’s what I got (as well as a C1 Classic that was my first “real” guitar purchase like 15 years ago...by real I mean, other than the fender squire strat and epiphone acoustics I purchased prior to that when just learning how to play) so I’m a Schecterian as well and I’m just curious about what you think of it. Cuz I got mine brand new out of the box too and it was perfect. I eventually had to make major truss rod adjustments after relocating from Boston (humidity saturated) to Albuquerque (literally desert climate of 0% humidity) but once I did that and realigned the strings to the fretboard radius and got the action where I wanted and then adjusted intonation then readjusted any loose frets from the major truss rod adjustment, it plays even better. So I just love the thing. So much in fact that I started doing ALL my cover videos using it, even songs played on 6 string guitars lol. Anyway I love your reviews. Thanks for doing them. 🤘🏼
Schecter has always been great with quality. Never came across a Schecter I hated. :) And Sweetwater fucking rocks! Never had a bad experience with any purchase I've had with them.
Bought this guitar. Love it. Except the truss rod cover screw broke as i loosened it, leaving the screw shaft still in the hole, and then the nut fell off as soon as i took off the stock strings... OK...
I feel like i'm the only person that loves the bat inlays haha. The new Halloween edition uses an ebony fretboard AND the bat inlays are glow in the fucking dark
Hey Arnold, do you still have this guitar? Ever considered blacking out the fretboard? Anyway, keep up the great work man!
great review.
Divitius t-shirt!!!!!
[Headbangs in at dooms gate]
I don't understand how a company like schecter can have good quality control and another made in the exact same factory in Indonesia or Korea as other Guitars like the Chapman that you reviewed but the one had better quality control than the other. Don't make sense how one can be built better then the next. All made by the same CNC machine and the same people
Arnold PLEASE do a Kemper profile run through. Where you got the profiles from and what amps they are profiling. I have a Kemper and wanna know some good places to find some actually good tones. THANKS!
Anthony Martin I buy profiles from a variety of sources: ERGlabs, Double Impact Drums, Origin Audio, and Lasse Lambert. I did a video on one pack I purchased about two years ago: ruclips.net/video/310-jG6yVW8/видео.html
Thanks for the reply! I'll check em out. Keep up the good work.
I love your honesty about the product at hand. No Bullshit real deal take on reviews.
It's crazy when guitar manufacturers don't file the fret edges. I do a lot of luthier work at home. It really doesn't take a ton of time to buff those out.
A person cutting their hands up is going to trash your guitar brand's name.
i agree sweet water is top notch, they dont ship anything that isnt perfect. Did u dig the candy??
a huge fan of schecters- i own 3...just can't beat the quality for the money...
To each their own, lol, I'm digging the bat inlays, But, I'm strange.
Sweetwater is the best. I was spoiled when I lived in the area. Now all guitar stores I visit just irritate me on their lack of service and quality instruments.
I can see you have fallen in love with this guitar but how does it compare to your Agile 10 string? As I know you love that instrument too. I am looking to get either one of these guitars at some point but now you have sold me on the 9 too, so what one would you say you prefer?
JamesTriesEverything Schecter > Agile. Sold the Agile recently, but this is more of a keeper instrument. At least for now.
makes sense, will look into getting one thanks :-)
Gonna be buying one used from a buddy soon
Such a good review man , props for always going into detail!
I personally dont own a schecter, bought one and had to return it fue to a malfunction of the bridge BUT
My buddy has a hellraiser 7 string and its just the best guitar out of the box that I have ever played, even the way its set up from factory is insane , perfect intonation and all that just WOW
Good game there Schecter
These guitars basically solve the problem I've had in every band - not being able to find a bass player!
Any suggestion on a good case for this guitar? I called Schecter but they didn't have any suggestions.
I always used a padded BASS gigbag for it
what is the secret to letting us know the notes of the strings are????
9 Strings? I'm still struggling with 6. The guitar and that tone is powerful.
Hi Arnold, how are you?
I'm want to enter in the extended range world and I'm thinking to buy a Shecter omen 8 and I wanna know your opinion about it.
You would recomend it or you think than another buget one will do the job better?
PD:Excuse the shitty english.
Cheers from Argentina lml
