- In this video I go through the process of machine sanding a panel ready for polish.
I go through the full process using all of the grades. You may not need all the grades depending on colour and the manufacturer of the clearcoat.

You mentioned that the name brand discs last longer. If i'm doing a full repaint how many trizact discs (1500/3000) should i purchase in advance?

Keep a large machine flat
I have a carbon fiber hood, I just sprayed it with 2k clear coat and I have tons of overspray, could I just start with the 3,000 sanding on my orbital and polish after? I was also told I needed more clear coat, Is it possible to wait a day to dry the clear coat and spray over it once more even with overspray
Well done. So if I sand with the 6000 disc, can I avoid the rubbing compound step and go straight to machine polishing step #2?
In come cases yes you can, I'd advise trying it to see what you get but there's always a random p3000 pig tail left behind from the last step which you can get with the step one if you used it though
any chance of u doing a vid using all the flatting, compounding, polishing techniques on motorbike plastics? love to see how you'd deal with that using these tools!!
+danielsonn77 hi Daniel, yes I use all the same techniques used in this video however i use a 3" orbital sander instead of a 6" hope this helps. Jordan

What does the P stand for?
A few days ago I did wet sanding for my very first time. I wasnt even really sure of what I was doing nor what to expect. I started wet sanding already from the 1500. I had to buy a trizac 3000 and 6000 but I did it all by hand. It didnt come out perfect as the scratch was deep but it looked better than before.
The 6000 disc cost me nearly 8 euros here in Portugal.
1500 and 2000 you always dry sand or it all depends on the situation?

Hi Alexis,
The P means that it is graded which is basically saying it follows a certain standard for abrasives. Abrasives that have a P should be decent quality. The 3M abrasives might not have a P because they use a different technology that doesn't allow the abrasive to fall under the P grade.
My machine is best but you can do it by hand it just takes a long time🙂👍
@@RepairRefinishTV Thanks a lot for your reply mate. I wanted to buy a sanding machine on ebay but I did have more room to bring it over with me, plus I had already spent loads of money on my detailing gear.

Awesome channel! No matter what I do i get pig tails all over! Its on fresh 2 week old soft clear. 2.5 mm orbital with interface. I can’t see the pigtails until I had the thing finished out with 5000 and buffet and hit it with my detailers light and then they all show up. It has been very frustrating and time-consuming to have to sand them all out again by hand. Do you have any suggestions could I possibly have an issue with my sander it is brand new and was $200. I do it wet.
Hey, what grade abrasives are you using before finishing with 5000? Poor quality abrasives can sometimes cause pig tails in the clear and also a cutting compound that isn't capible o removing p1500 may struggle to actually cut into the clear to further refine the finished clearcoat. Cheers
@@RepairRefinishTV Thank you for your time! I use 3m 1000 grit paper on a hard block then got to 3m trizac paper . 1500,3000,5000. I us a dewalt 849 with white foam 3m pad and Sonox cut max . I just thought that after 5000 i should not need such an aggressive machine and compound. These are all show cars with lots of clear but not baked.
Im the new guy and wanted to bring what I learned on your channel to the process and speed it up, but have been plagued by the pigtails. They are micro though, not the big dirt pigs everyone talks about.
Any suggestions are appreciated!
Would it be possible to use the trizact disk's dry ? Or damp ?

How about blending in paint and clearcoat what grit do you use.
You'd normally use 1200 but i don't recommend blending in it's oldschool and the edges fad back after 12 months and looks shitty..
I know it's a pain to paint whole panels if you only have a small repair on say a quarter panel and you have to paint up over the turret but it's just more professional to do it.

Hi,I have a question about the size of the sander orbit,is it not suitable to use a sander with a 5mm orbit to sand lacquer,even with 2000 or 2500,I was going to use my sander for clear sanding with 2000 but Im not sure now if I should because of the orbit size,would it make that much difference?, oh and great video.
+steve baker hi steve sorry for the late reply 5mm orbit is ok for sanding but a 2.5 would be better. I've used both 2.5 and 5mm and not seen much difference. You may get some swirls or pig tails if you don't work up the grades properly.
So 5mm will be fine just work up the grades and that will reduce the chance of scratches.

Lovely,but instead of a 6" pad would a 5" pad give a smaller orbit,and may be better?
+steve baker it doesn't matter about the size of the pad the orbit is how the bad moves. Weather it be a 2" or a 10" the pad will orbit the same size. Hope this makes sense. Thanks Jordan

Hey!!! Can someone help me.. I'm using the P1500 3m sandpaper .. its the purple ones that don't have the extraction holes in it because my sander doesn't have the holes in it... I'm using an interface pad as well..but my sandpaper (sanding dry) keeps getting small clearcoat dots built up on it.. I have to scratch them off to clear the small white dots off of my paper.. what am I doing wrong? Thanks all!!!!!

Few things, dots appearing on paper can mean that the clearcoat is softer than usual.
Or, the sandpaper is just too coarse.
My go to paper is p2000 as it has a good balance of cutting and being slightly easier to polish.

Also, trying wet may also reduce it and even degreasing the panel first if it's an older panel. Thanks
All I can think about is why you're wearing someone's second hand race suite to sand paint.
Remember use clean water not your dirty bucket water for wet sanding.
