This is a little bit of an excuse. Any metal can be analyzed. The reason ppl make ingots is to reduce size in storage and to get paid for what they have. Specifically, ppl are tired of getting ripped off at the scrap yard selling low grade, and #2 wire. And the typical, "Your copper is not shiny"
If my scrap yard had $20K to buy a XRF spectrometer they would take ingots. If you hold sterling silver wear do not ingot it.Leave it so the 925,sterling mark is visible.Hard to get rid of home made ingot silver,Yes on "your copper is not shiny"
@@davidfleishman2275 gas chromo, or spec., but I'm sure there are much cheaper, easier ways. You could do a density measurement. The reality is less than 1%, although I don't have real data, is ppl trying to cheat the scrap yards and 80% of the scrap yards cheating the customers. I could name names. Scrap yards frown upon transparency, wonder why.
@@davidfleishman2275 I think the cheapest, easiest way. Is to use a graduated cylinder and do a volume displacement. From there you can convert volume into mass, then determine density. Then look at the Periodic Table
Good approach- we appreciate that.
I agree.
Not to mention the cost of the forge and the propane, and all the other equipment you need. Anyone else ever watch bigstackd?
We have not, but we are going to check their channel out and maybe even do our own experiments!
It’s a hobby…
If you make the right ingot it sells for WAY more than scrap price
@@chrisk6822 I'm going to have to look into that.
yesssssss that guy is freaking awesome he makes some beautiful bullion
@@maxwind1862 yes I watch him. He has a cool room
totally makes sense, and that doesnt even take fraud into consideration. Thanks for the enlightening content!
Very welcome!
I know some one took a copper ingot to a scrap yard and yard calls it red brass. Because scrap yard dont know what there getting.
There you go!
I sell at farmers market, fairs and local events. Mostly its word of mouth, conversations and curious people.
I see people selling lead ingots for $2-3 per pound. I just have time to melt it and pour it. Too busy tearing things apart for the copper and gold content. Good for them though. I'd love to be able to get prices that high for lead.
Got to have lead if you make your own ammo or fishing lures but the lead i have bought in the past was about $1-$1.50 per pound.
This is just another Scrapyard feeding you crap .... they have no idea how pure copper wire is... they are just assuming it is pure copper strands... well I have tested copper wire from many companies and NONE ... NOT ONE Has pure copper... they all have impurities in their copper.... so don't by that garbage this scrapysrd thief is telling you....
you're exposing yourself to heavy metals for how much an hour??
Aren't you selling copper for $2-3 per pound too?
@@iScrapApp ya a little over $3 right now.
I guess I'm very lucky. My scrap yard here in Virginia paid me for #1 copper when I sold my bars. Made over $700 which I was happy about. I think this issue also depends on where you live and the scrap yard buying the material. My area is very rural and I've been dealing with my yard for many years. When I told the yard owner I had only melted #1 copper to make the bars (which was completely true) he trusted me. The owner knew from my previous history that all material I sell to him is clean. No matter what type of metal I'm selling.
I even made my own stamp maker's mark and had stamped each bar. That way the yard owner would always know who had made the copper bars he had purchased.
Interesting perspective, good to know!
What scrap yard did you go to?
@@andrewfultz3987 I live in Virginia and the scrap yard is Bowser and Son Salvage Yard. I work for the state and he knows I wouldn't risk my job by trying to pull some scam selling dirty copper.
I dunno if I was smelting copper for price increase… probably easier to sell your smelted copper if instead of making crude ingots cast in common thicker everyday copper shapes like busbars, compression eyelets for large battery terminals, heat sink discs from computers etc…
Well played. Much more ROI
Bullets...
Good thought process.
Scrap on Dude. 🐎🌻✌️
heck ya 😎👍👍
Do you buy copper shot?
That would be cool
We do!
Good point about ingots.
Thanks!
How about aluminum inguts?
They may be worse than copper.
Aluminum sucks, I stick to Brass & Copper. Scrap the aluminum. Not worth the propane or time spent
can i sell my lead ingots on ebay without a permit?
We believe so.
Sell them on other media sources to
Like where?
I can understand not giving BB price for it, but most places won't even give #2 for it.
Also, I didn't know you could mix copper with lead.
Brass and bronze are copper alloys of lead tin and other metals .
It is tough if you have mixed materials inside.
@@teddycunningham7568 Right, but I meant mixing lead strictly with copper. Not necessarily old school brass, or bronze, which you can tell right away aren't copper.
First of all, it takes TIME AND MONEY AND HEAT to make a copper ingot...WHY?? the LESS I HAVE TO DO TO THE METAL BEFORE I SELL IT, THE MORE MONEY I MAKE!!
There you go- great perspective.
Not so
The right ingot is worth WAY more than BB!
My scrapyard has a gun they test with so they do buy them my I gots are 99.2 percent pure
When an ingot is analyzed the reading can't go the full thickness to get a full reading of all the contents
copper melts at 1100C, Alum at 660C and Lead at 330C, So you'll get an alloy if anything. Oh and steel will float on molten copper, so kinda hard to have a steel core. Not saying it can't be done, but I've no clue how to accomplish it.
I melt for my own hobbies. Jewelry and art. @@iScrapApp
Don’t you have a xrf gun?
Yes we do - but the XRF doesn't check what is 1-2 inches in the middle of an ingot - only the surface on the outside.
Cut with bandsaw on site and xrf gun mid section. I think most ingot makers don't scrap them anyways they sell online tp stackers or people who make crafts.
@@iScrapApp Try to hide some led in the middle of a copper ingot, I'll wait.
@@saltvpn671 hide it nearer the corners, our monkey brains love fractions even if we don’t consciously know it and people are more likely to cut at 1/4,1/2,1/3 sections in both length ways and width ways, I would avoid those areas.🤷♂️
Not worth the money to turn copper into ingots because it waste alot of propane and time
Great point
Ingots are only good for ebay. Btw I sell lead in ingots directly to manufacturer.
Words to live by!
scrap yards pay rock bottom prices. Never going to make a living as a scrapper unless you have have very high volumes - semi truck loads. It might be fun hobby but most scrappers could make faster money stocking the grocery store shelves.
OR you can charge customers and make money on the labor with the scrap as the profit.
How much copper should I hoard for doomsday? How about a zombie apocalypse? 😮
Well for doomsday you can never have enough anti microbial copper it keeps the covid away or so they say. I do know that copper keeps the slugs away for sure. And as far as the zombie apocalypse id say stock up on plenty of lead atached to hollow brass filled with some sort of black powder substance. But don't take my word for it do your own research K
Zombies love copper hord dog food instead they hate that stuff
Hhaha- funny.
Don't sell any metal ingots to the yards. Tim is trying to teach you its not a good investment to do so. Sell online or to your local lcs they may buy them under retail as s trade. They do look fantastic in treasure closets
Thank you for the opinion!
