If this song played in my elevator I would stay in the elevator until it finished even if it made me late for something. This and Brass Machine are my two favorite jazz pieces of all time.
My jazz band (of 6th-8th graders) is playing this and there were two baris, me and someone else, and then they moved me to Second Tenor since our current second tenor player had to drop jazz band, sort of.
My high school jazz band is going to state solo ensemble with this piece, along with Just A Minor Thing, and I absolutely love the Bari line even though I don't play it, I play trumpet rather.
Dallas Dillard the person in my jazz band blames his trumpet for his ability to not hit high notes, holds notes too long, and plays a half count too late. I am better than him but i am stuck with 2nd and 3rd parts for no reason at all
in complete honestly, the 1st trumpet part isn't that high or even that hard. it only goes to what? a D? (I'm not sure. it's been a while since I've seen it) that's like the very bottom of the "high register".
in 2003, my cousin's school band played this and i loved it…i kept the title in my head all this time to look it up later and never did … throughout the years, it would come to me to type it in, but i'd always find something else to play instead…i finally gave in and i can't believe i waited this darn long to play it!! LOVE IT!! ALL OVER AGAIN!
+JarSquidProductions Hey, so I'm doing slap for my Jazz band this year, and It's my first time doing this kind of music, is there any tips you can give me for this song since it just gives chords? Like, what rhythm's would work and such? Thanks.
Electric, and well, I've attempted it before but I can't really get it down, I've been practicing, because I have six weeks until jazz festival. So, I have to figure out this funk chart and learn slap within six weeks
Ok that is a tall task. I know there is a lot of videos on youtube about slap bass. If you find a technique that works roll with it and practice, practice, practice! I suggest practicing using the octaves. Thumping the low and pulling the high note. move up and down the neck just playing 4 quater notes on each octave untill you have that down then start expirimenting with faster speeds and with different rythems. Hope this helps! Good luck!
Played this song my sophomore year as first tenor and had a solo. Definitely one of my favorites! I'm a fan of the West Coast funk style... and Jarvis is just an awesome composer/arranger.
i just don't see how people that young can play high school level music. Some dude said his junior high band played molly on the shore by percy grainger and I was just like theres NO...FREAKING...WAY. that's stuff college and professional ensembles play and some high schools. I just don't get it
Got my associates in music last spring, on my way to my last final for this semester; but I can’t help but reminisce about playing this in high school! I loved my part and I always felt super confident playing it (lead alto!)
Funny you should say that. When I was learning to play this in highschool, the teacher told the bari sax player that the only way anyone could play this kind of funk properly is by pretending she weighs 600 pounds.
I remember playing this song for my Jazz Band. Sure, i was only 3rd Trombone, but i still loved it. The rest of the band, not so much, but then again, we played Frankenstein and Poco Loco, so i can't complain.
played this for the parkland high school jazz ensemble, we have 2 bands and the one bari couldnt make it so i was her replacement, we got the highest rank both nights when i played bari for them, and im in the lower band haha gotta love knowing how to play all saxophones:)!!!!
my jazz band is doin it at school =] we just had a concert yesterday actually and we freakin awsome!!!!! i cant wait for our next one when we are super good at this song! =]
Played drums for this. Made my part with a TON of ghost notes on the snare, Tried to get as all out funk as possible with it. More a balance interpretation and rhythm. Fun as hell to play!
I was literally trying to study for chemistry and looking up "critical mass" thinking that this was a video describing critical mass of a nuclear reaction. Fuck this
The nice part about playing in small bands is that it requires ne to change saxes so much. Im pretty good on all of them, with tenor as my strongest, but i would love to play bari on this part
I'm just notifying you so you'll see your comment from 4 years ago, hoping you'll listen to Critical Mass again and get all the feels. You're welcome. ;)
my whole class can play this song by heart. its one of our favorite!!! i dont even have a favorite part of the song, its all good!!! although trumpet FTW!
If you want you can give the Rhythm section a chance to play a Latin Rhythm like a Samba in the C-part with the Csus 9 & Abj9/Bb chords. I (keys) have experimented this in my band and we all just love it that way!
im playing this in my sec4 big band in the académie de musique program at massey-vanier highschool, and the bassist and I (trumpet) are in sec. 3...so yeah we are good
If this song played in my elevator I would stay in the elevator until it finished even if it made me late for something. This and Brass Machine are my two favorite jazz pieces of all time.
Well you're a bigot
YOUR elevator?
So you are more of a rock/funk musician than a swing player?
lol man i was just thinking that
Brick tator You should hear Honk, also by Jeff.
Lead trumpet for life. This song is the best to just blast like crazy. Shriek the improv.
My high school jazz band is playing this. It's sooo fun to play.
Same. I love it so much.
same, best song so far 👌
squeezemyparticiple us too, but we’re having some trouble making it less repetitive
Same with us. Definitely was a favorite!
I'm about to do it, and I get to play bari hehe
I play bari for this in my high school jazz band and i am in love with the bari line!!! It is amazing :D
I eventually got swapped to bari on here, the tenor part was fun but the bari part is just amazing and I love playing it.
Bari is truly the best of the saxes
Funkiest Bari Sax part on this planet!!!
*head bobbing*
The 1st trumpet line is insane! !! I'm playing it and I love it!!!! It's soo awesome!!
i don't know, my band's 1st trumpet can't play it at all! haha
im playing it too!!!! ahh i love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dallas Dillard the person in my jazz band blames his trumpet for his ability to not hit high notes, holds notes too long, and plays a half count too late. I am better than him but i am stuck with 2nd and 3rd parts for no reason at all

Dallas that's cuz our first trumpet was bad lol. I could play it.
I literally go to Berklee now and this is still one of my all time favorite charts
This feels like it would be playing on a Mario Kart 8 track
Bari sax player. My senior year feature I guess. fucking love this song.
Funkiest piece I've ever played on the drums and I love it
Bari fucking sax. I am so lucky to play it
Even my 4th trumpet part for this is awesome!
facts
just played this at disney world on saturday....killed it!!
So fun to play on the set. Can't wait to play it for my next concert
1st Tenor is so amazing and fun on this song!
in 2003, my cousin's school band played this and i loved it…i kept the title in my head all this time to look it up later and never did … throughout the years, it would come to me to type it in, but i'd always find something else to play instead…i finally gave in and i can't believe i waited this darn long to play it!! LOVE IT!! ALL OVER AGAIN!
playing the slap bass part in high school jazz band! so fun!
+JarSquidProductions Hey, so I'm doing slap for my Jazz band this year, and It's my first time doing this kind of music, is there any tips you can give me for this song since it just gives chords? Like, what rhythm's would work and such? Thanks.
+Marcus Solan (Nuclear Virus) are you playing it on an electric bass guitar or an upright bass? and have have you played slap bass technique before?
Electric, and well, I've attempted it before but I can't really get it down, I've been practicing, because I have six weeks until jazz festival. So, I have to figure out this funk chart and learn slap within six weeks
Ok that is a tall task. I know there is a lot of videos on youtube about slap bass. If you find a technique that works roll with it and practice, practice, practice! +JarSquidProductions Thank you, can you give me any examples of what you used during this song?
Guitar part! its awesome!

Faulokomo same
Played this song my sophomore year as first tenor and had a solo. Definitely one of my favorites! I'm a fan of the West Coast funk style... and Jarvis is just an awesome composer/arranger.
Our jazz band is playing this and our jazz band consists of 6, 7, and 8th graders
it must be nice living in texas
Joshcoshbagosh Wrong. I'm in his band, and its nowhere near Texas.
i just don't see how people that young can play high school level music. Some dude said his junior high band played molly on the shore by percy grainger and I was just like theres NO...FREAKING...WAY. that's stuff college and professional ensembles play and some high schools. I just don't get it
Oh hey ethan! lol
Joshcoshbagosh If you have good directors and dedicated students, its not that hard.
Also, hey Cooper, this is AJ.
just got this tune for jazz. i play first tenor but oh god do i wish i could play bari for it. great tune.
Great Song!! Our Jazz Band Rocked It Out.. Played 4th Trumpet On This One.. Pretty Cool.!
i play lead trumpet in jazz at my high school and we just got this song today! It's SOOOOOO AWESOME!!!
I love this song. Best jazz music ever!!
Band is playing this. Awesome song! Often gets stuck in my head throughout the day.
Got my associates in music last spring, on my way to my last final for this semester; but I can’t help but reminisce about playing this in high school! I loved my part and I always felt super confident playing it (lead alto!)
Makes trumpet high notes sound amazing :)
Yo, I get to play this song for my high school Jazz band. I'm also a bari player :)
Where is the sax solo?
Bari all the way. 💯💯
This piece is amazing on Bari sax. My middle school is playing it right now and im playing the bari part

Man. Freshman year band was the best. So much nostalgia it hurts.
I'm playing this as a freshman this year
I love this song!!! We are playing it in band! It is so fun!
Funny you should say that. When I was learning to play this in highschool, the teacher told the bari sax player that the only way anyone could play this kind of funk properly is by pretending she weighs 600 pounds.

God I miss this song, 8th grade 1st jazz band. We played this for a jazz festival, 1st place baby. I was on bari!!!!!
Playing this and runaway baby by Bruno mars and its awesome. Alto sax marching line representing all the way in Oahu Hawaii.
Glad I get to finish my senior year out by playing at Bari sax part 🎷
I LOVE this song. 🎺🎺🎺
So many baris while I'm here playing piano.
This song is great...
I play this on my sax w/ my school's jazz band. Very nice song
Played this as first alto👌🏼
FitzyBoy4 im playing this at my concert this week i play 1st trombone
same👌
first tenor and bari rock out on this one! cant leave home with out the trumpets though. great song.
I used to listen to "big name" jazz music. After playing this in jazz, I'm looking for more underrated funk.
my jazz band is doin it at school =]
we just had a concert yesterday actually and we freakin awsome!!!!!
i cant wait for our next one when we are super good at this song! =]
I shall have this song played at my funeral :D.
I'm making a future funk song out of this.
Played drums for this. Made my part with a TON of ghost notes on the snare, Tried to get as all out funk as possible with it. More a balance interpretation and rhythm. Fun as hell to play!
I played drums on this, and I created a sick hi hat beat that syncs with the base, along with a loud poppy shot on the snare. Its awsome.
I was literally trying to study for chemistry and looking up "critical mass" thinking that this was a video describing critical mass of a nuclear reaction. Fuck this
God this brings back memories
First time I was comfortable playing the alto
This I where I found my love of jazz😁😮🙂🤩
The nice part about playing in small bands is that it requires ne to change saxes so much. Im pretty good on all of them, with tenor as my strongest, but i would love to play bari on this part
all soul...love the jazz man
We're playing this in my high school and I play 2nd tenor and it's awesome.
I'm going to play this soon! I'm a junior in high school and I play the trombone! This is gonna be so fun :)
Playing bari on this now! Just using it as a fun break between heavier charts but it's still fun.
I'm just notifying you so you'll see your comment from 4 years ago, hoping you'll listen to Critical Mass again and get all the feels. You're welcome. ;)
Got the privilege of playing this in high school, get to play it again in college. Hell yea, alto sax section
1st trombone holy smokes were those notes high good song though
+Aaron Loya They are fun though! :D
Aaron Loya try 23north82west by Bill russo it goes to the 6ledger line f

Not that high. My director has killed me far past this with other pieces :,)
You're tellin me, I play second and my lips are dead by the end
If I had to listen to one song for my whole life this is it
One thing i love about this song is the SLAP BASS!! and Bari sax!!

@FeelOurJolt We have the number one high school jazz band in the country and we still play this song.!!
We played this song in my high school jazz band almost every year. I played bari. It's so groovy. :D
Thos song is too awesome
Cool. I can't wait to hear what it sounds like when we preform it this year
Gotta love any funk piece composed by my man Jeff Jarvis though, he knows his stuff
Indeed
@@robbingtonthekicker8129 no fucking way lmao
for anyone who sees this and cares, its because this is my old youtube account and j just realized i commented on this exact same comment 2 years ago
For sure, the sheet music actually says Bari and Lead trumpet carry the band
We played this two differnt years when I was in high school, once on bass and once on the bari. I can
Pasadena City College Studio Jazz Band is playing this song as our closer.
my whole class can play this song by heart. its one of our favorite!!! i dont even have a favorite part of the song, its all good!!! although trumpet FTW!

Yeah first trumpet!!! Made my day when I saw my part.

I love this song...
My jazz band needs to do it =[
great song!
I'm playing this one too with Pete's corner bigband!
This song is so sexy. We're working on this in Show Band right now! Hope it sounds just as good as this sounds!
Such a great chart
Piano part just has chords written in so you have to make up your part.
Anyone played the other composition by Jarvis - High Octane?
@andyauyong Don't you mean that sexy baritone sax at the begging?
Super fun chart to play. I play the drum kit is song is insane. My favourite funk song of all time :)
love this song! YEAH FIRST TENOR!
an absolute bop
I am playing this in jazz band this year!!!
I'm recognizing some of the first trombone licks that I played 😂
Why were the solos cut out? It sounded pretty awesome.
I tried looking this up at "Critical mass song" because I am playing it in my jazz band. And up came the outro to M3rkmus1c's videos
wut, when did he use this for an outro?
If you want you can give the Rhythm section a chance to play a Latin Rhythm like a Samba in the C-part with the Csus 9 & Abj9/Bb chords. I (keys) have experimented this in my band and we all just love it that way!
Actually, come to think of it, this almost has a disco feel to it.
Kinda reminds me of Brick House by The Commodores
im playing this in my sec4 big band in the académie de musique program at massey-vanier highschool, and the bassist and I (trumpet) are in sec. 3...so yeah we are good
