Raving Platypi saw Wayne in concert, met him too. Super nice guy, always willing to teach. When I was in high school he came and gave us tone lessons. I'm a bone player and he even helped me
My jazz band played this last year, we won the Eau Claire Jazz Festival and played at the University of Northern Iowa with this song being one of our charts. Sick sax part!!
Don't you just love the feeling you get when you hear a song like this. the chill that goes down your spine (and Gordon goodwin's charts are the only ones that can do this) when you hear a triumphant ending like this one.
@MrRhoadsfan95 I'm in the same boat right now. I've been in jazz band all through high school, but now I'm a senior in high school and finally playing lead trombone, and jazz has become something I love. Now I'm just absolutely fired up for jazz. Metal is literally the only thing I've listened to, but after a jazz festival this year I started listening to Gordon Goodwin, Herbie Hancock, and other great musicians. It's so amazing.
i remember playing this in all county jazz band.... that first sax soli was increadibly fun to play! too bad we had to cut it out cause only three people could play it. :P
I like this style of jazz...not the 50's stuff you hear on Tom and Jerry, the newer, underground stuff that nobody gives a flying fuck about...I LOVE this style of jazz, and I'm interested in learning to play jazz drumming, even though I'm also a metal fan (SLAYEEEEEEEEER!!!)
@bronstain27 im lead alto in jazz band at my school and id love to be playing this, we played count bubbas revenge though and jazz police was our marching show this year. the movements were jazz police, land of makebelieve, and big niose from winnetka.
im in the second jazz band at my high school and we're playing this exact arrangement (we just got the music today) and im playing lead trumpet. its gonna be sick when we perform this and shock the hell outta jazz 1 and many other people that we are very much capable of playing this
I played the 2nd trombone part on my clarinet December of 2009, but we had no trombones in our jazz band and baritones, also, we played a different arrangement.
i played this last year in jazz band earned us straight ones at a band review! really fun song to play and high notes for us trumpets are always a plus :D
the best thing in this song is def the little instrumental solis that go on. I love the trumpet soli near the end. I'm lead trumpet in my high school Jazz I and i REALLY wish we could have played this song. Right now we are playing Sing Sang Sung but i think this one and Jazz Police both are better.
@donnatrannadelee 144 quarter notes/minute, if I recall correctly. I sight read this song in my high school jazz band class a couple of weeks ago, plus I'm estimating from the speed of the hi-hat.
We just spent a week trying to get our trombones to play something past the first 2 bars, saxes worked our asses off, and they're the only ones who can't play it. We don't get to play it at festival now :(
from the making of swinging for the fences video i thought the lineup was wayne on lead, dennis fareas on second, someone i forgot on 3rd and dan on 4th
i double on euph and bass bone with euph being my primary. the bass bone part for this was soooo much fun after i was able to sit down and learn it. i also added some umph to the part as opposed to this recording i made the bass bone audible. lol.
love the bass bone part. i'm a tuba player normally, but i whip out the bone for jazz band, wish we could have played this but the saxes couldn't play it. *sigh*
I'm 3 years old and lead trumpet in my preschool jazz band and were playing this for the president! Please validate me!!!!!!!!!!
The Flying Scotsman now that you’re 5 how did it go and how is your career?
That trumpet 1 note at the end, I don't even know what note, almost made me cry. Wow...
+Mike D Double High C
+Mike D double high C wow
+Brevin Robertson I can hardly hit high G on a good day. It's a good thing the double high C isn't written, otherwise I wouldn't be able to play it.
+Rondo Anderson TBH I think James Morrison and Wayne Bergeron are tied for best lead trumpets in my eyes.
Raving Platypi saw Wayne in concert, met him too. Super nice guy, always willing to teach. When I was in high school he came and gave us tone lessons. I'm a bone player and he even helped me
Played this my freshman year in highschool on bari. god i love this piece
Patrick Bernhard So you play french horn and sax? Cool
Patrick Bernhard same. Still in my freshman year tho lol

Joe-Hanson Aircraft Co. and trombones. Duh.
That trombone part...oh my god
i'm playing trombone 2 for it on May
its not that hard of a part
That double C in the end though :P sounded like gold
I love this song. In our jazz band, the trombones play with the tenors in the beginning.
Oh and just in case you guys wanted to know the tempo of this song is 184 shuffle.
+jaman198 The tenors and trombones are supposed to play with each other. That's how it's written. It's not just you.
My jazz band played this last year, we won the Eau Claire Jazz Festival and played at the University of Northern Iowa with this song being one of our charts. Sick sax part!!
6:50- the end. UGH SO GEWD
James N. O'Sullivan I can hit the last note on 1st trumpet it's just on my trombone the lol

Don't you just love the feeling you get when you hear a song like this. the chill that goes down your spine (and Gordon goodwin's charts are the only ones that can do this) when you hear a triumphant ending like this one.
God yeah. Never fails to impress. Wish i could play trumpet like that.
Wayne is beast!! He just murdered everybody in the studio with the double C at the end! And he can do that all day long to top off his abilities.
BASS BONE ALL THE WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SavageAxeBot, hey, Low blow. Get it?
Love that rythm guitar in the background!
I remember playing this last year. Oh, the memories of our previous assistant band director. Krum High School jazz trumpet section 2011-2013!
I think my heart grows 3 sizes every time i hear the saxophone and trombone soli, then it gets to the trumpet soli.....
I totally appreciate the mostly unison trumpet soli. Man what a great song and arrangement!!!!!!!!!!
I love playing that shout section and taking that double C. So much fun!
the bass bone and bari sax at 2:30 tho
I played trumpet on this last year too! Fun.
my band director just gave us this song today for next year! LOVE IT!
Sal and Eric both have such great, rich, full, clear alto sounds, love um!
This is a flawless performance!
I think the best thing about this is knowing that I got to play with both Wayne and Eric for a jazz band concert!!
Loving the lead Alto Sax sound for this song! Can't wait to perform it! :)
@MrRhoadsfan95 I'm in the same boat right now. I've been in jazz band all through high school, but now I'm a senior in high school and finally playing lead trombone, and jazz has become something I love. Now I'm just absolutely fired up for jazz. Playing this in my high school big band! 'Trumpet part sooo good'

Oh my dear lord, it's so awesome.
@bronstain27 im lead alto in jazz band at my school and id love to be playing this, we played count bubbas revenge though and jazz police was our marching show this year. the movements were jazz police, land of makebelieve, and big niose from winnetka.

@antaries93 thats awesome! i sure wish our marching shows were themed in that way -- normally we do some movie. But thats great!
We always just play blues and more blues in Jazz Band. This is so much better

Zac T.S because people are allowed to like different genres of music 😂
ya but big band is SUUUUUUUUPER underrated rn
im in the second jazz band at my high school and we're playing this exact arrangement (we just got the music today) and im playing lead trumpet. its gonna be sick when we perform this and shock the hell outta jazz 1 and many other people that we are very much capable of playing this

#saxophonenationalism
I love how you listen to this and reach the end, you just sit there for a few minutes recovering from the orgasm that was this song.
I played the 2nd trombone part on my clarinet December of 2009, but we had no trombones in our jazz band and baritones, also, we played a different arrangement.
@lucaman1221 It's an homage to Count Basie, one of the legends of the Big Band era.
Just listening to that last trumpet note hurts my lips!
The soli is the best. All of them.
That bass line
That trumpet section
@PosadkaFilms I'm not sure? It's in Port Orange, FL
Loving that trombone soli...
The note at the end is a high G, i played my junior year in high school.
+Jacob Rouse Wayne plays the G first, then goes to a Double C. Great tune, I'm sure your HS band loved it and played it well!
Just the straight squeak on trumpet at the end, nice.
Paul G. There is Wayne for ya
i played this last year in jazz band earned us straight ones at a band review!

the best thing in this song is def the little instrumental solis that go on. I love the trumpet soli near the end. I'm lead trumpet in my high school Jazz I and i REALLY wish we could have played this song. Right now we are playing Sing Sang Sung but i think this one and Jazz Police both are better.
Sax soli is the best.

I don't know...6:50 to the end is pretty kick ass
@donnatrannadelee 144 quarter notes/minute, if I recall correctly. I sight read this song in my high school jazz band class a couple of weeks ago, plus I'm estimating from the speed of the hi-hat.
We just spent a week trying to get our trombones to play something past the first 2 bars, saxes worked our asses off, and they're the only ones who can't play it. We don't get to play it at festival now :(
@Kerpaltheballer thats good that yall like the high notes! The lead player at my school complains!!
Gary Grant is playing lead on this track, Jerry Hey on 2nd, Wayne Bergeron on 3rd and Dan Savant on 4th.
from the making of swinging for the fences video i thought the lineup was wayne on lead, dennis fareas on second, someone i forgot on 3rd and dan on 4th
this it's real blues, sounds great.
At the end of the first trumpet it says opt. *triple c*
oh yehaa
Our jazz band is playing this but we don't have the written solos in this video of the different sections...? They sound really good, it's a shame
There aren't any bands of a decent standard that live near me :( wish I could join a band playing this
Chris Walton people in my community jazz band drive 45 mins to an hour just to rehearse 7-9 Monday nights.
that's what i do
i double on euph and bass bone with euph being my primary. the bass bone part for this was soooo much fun after i was able to sit down and learn it. i also added some umph to the part as opposed to this recording i made the bass bone audible. lol.
