The clarity with which you explained in this video is outstanding. You are my new teacher.
What a gentleman. Wonderfully clear and articulate.
You're the first guitarist I've seen on RUclips that both sounds great and who's skills seem actually attainable.
Thanks!!
I'm currently at this particular part of my journey with guitar. This is the clearest strategy Ive heard for how to approach soloing over the changes. That helped so much! Ive seen tons of vids on the topic. Everyone talks about targeting chord tones, not mentioning the importance of the 3rd.
Jack , you're literally THE best guitar teacher on this platform. Love your work and will always keep looking forward to all the videos!!
Thank you!
This is absolutly right!!!! Your Patron is a gold mine for antbody who wants to progress.
This has really helped me on the next stage of my playing. Thanks. Loved your delivery.
This is the best and simplest video I have found in 3 years. Thank you. As a self taught guitarist I know I will make progress after this video.
Nice lesson, Jack. I’ve never noticed how the “Isn’t She Lovely” progression sounds like “Fly Me To The Moon.” Lots to practice here. Thanks!
I like the relaxed way you show and tell things, it makes it easy to follow and apply, almost in real time..Thanks !
Built different son, I've been needing a lesson like this. I feel like I can base my solos around this
this is great, and i love the pacing of the lesson. doesnt feel rushed! thanks jack
Another great lesson, you have the right attitude and temperament for doing this, great job
So revealing and given in such straightforward and understated manner. This is true teaching devoid of ego and showmanship. Subscribed!
That was amazingly simple Jack! I can't tell you how much just came together for me! Thank you so much!
You really simplified a song I have been trying to learn for years.❤
Thanks Jack. This is fundamental information and I really appreciate your calm and relaxed approach teaching guitar You are a really good guitar teacher - and player!
Holy cow, what a great lesson. This is incredibly useful for a people playing a lot of genres at all different skill levels.
Outstanding guitarist and teacher. So accomplished & thoughtful in his approach to both.
This is the best video I've seen on the topic. Very clear and simple. Thank you!
It seems like I keep coming to your videos to help me with my own song writing. You do a great job!
Thank you for being so clear, you made it so easy to understand. I'm so watching all your other videos!
I have watched many videos on this subject along with trying to do this unsuccessfully for some time. I have never heard or thought to focus on the 3rd. Which, of course, makes total sense as it is arguably the most important chord tone. I honestly can't believe I never put that together. One of those "DUH" moments for me for sure. I was always trying to focus on the root notes of the chords and it never sounded like what I was looking for. I can't wait to work on this later! Thanks so much!
This tone sounds so very nice. I can't get enough of this video.
This is just what I need at this point! Thanks! And, you prove the point well in your brief examples. It really sounds great!
I was able to improvise thoughtfully right away! Thanks a lot!
EXCELLENT just stumbled on you by chance and ABSOLUTELY LOVE how simply you unlocked another way of playing over chords in a logical way Because I play by ear I hit and miss so that gives me a stronger impro base and is great for condifence A BIG THANK YOU JACK!
All your content is so amazing!! It is so helpful and incredibly informative, all presented in such an easy way to comprehend. Love all your videos!
The way you teach! I can't tell you how many "simplified" videos I've watched, and was still left overwhelmed, confused, and frustrated. thank you so much for what you do, this really helped and opened up a whole new way of thinking. it wasn't too riddled with theory language to where my brain shuts down from mental gymnastics. It was just right, even up to the tempo of your speaking to where I didn't find it necessary to rewind to grasp the last thing you said. love your playing love your teaching thank you!
Clear, concise, digestible---and that Gibson sounds great! 👌
Thank you for finally telling us what everyone else SHOULD have been telling us. This will be a fantastic boost for so many operating at the same gringo level as myself. Fabulous motivation to get the head down. BRILLIANT!!!
I like this a lot. The 7th is the other important chord note, but just focusing on the 3rd gives me a fighting chance to make it through the changes!
Great video, Jack - thanks for sharing this with us!
Another EXCELLENT Lesson! Very clearly explained. Thank You!
Amazing teacher! Thanks a lot, it’s crazy how theory and application it’s explained so clearly and effective to do this approaches right away🤓
Jack, I’m an older guy transitioning to guitar after 40-yrs on keyboard. This lesson makes so much sense to me; my biggest challenge at this juncture is learning the fretboard. Also, I’ve not seen anyone else play guitar as effortlessly as you do and your notes are so clean and precise. Thanks a million…you really know your craft. Be well. 💯
Thank you! My pleasure!

Of all the videos on how to play over chord changes, this is one of the easiest to understand. Well done and thanks.
Super 🎉 Just started a theory class a few day ago after years of playing without instruction. Connecting dots quick thanks to this approach. 😊
You are the best instructor I've seen in my 50 years of playing. Thank you 🎶
Such a helpful lesson for an intermediate guitarist. Makes my brain hurt a bit (in a good way) but improves my soloing immeasurably. Thanks for another great lesson Jack.
Great job, an excellent way to demystify the journey through the progression. As you were playing through the thirds I heard many of the jazz guitar greats.
So calm! Lovely video. Thanks.
Any level player can get something useful and valuable...I think I already know your lessons but I always get something anyway.
Finally subscribed. Thank you so much for providing
Truly a joy watching your channel Jack.
Excellent....really happy to have found this. You've made me more aware of what I'm actually doing! :)
Fantastic video and thought provoking. Thanks for sharing.
So glad to have found you, excellent video!
Another great lesson. Thank you for your generosity 😎👍
Wonderful spot. Super well explained and helpful theory plus lovely melodies and good vibes 🎸thank you
Absolutely fantastic lesson. Many teachers assume students already know certain steps already. I love how you break it down from the ingredients, logic, ideas and techniques. This is the best method for solving problems and progressing 👍👍
Simple, concise and with a million possibilities. Great lesson Jack!
Glad you liked it!
Very informative Mate! Thanks for sharing
You are a talented teacher and guitarist. Thank you!
Thankyou so much man!! Im a young producer who learned a bunch about music theory and went and put in the time to work on my craft. As of recent, I was getting the hang of ‘playing the changes’, but didn’t know that there was a way to really learn it other than just solely working on it with no clue of what it is. I didn’t even know there was a name for it. Much thanks man!!
Super helpful, thank you Jack. A fan from Austria
That is one of the best useful little tidbits! It works!
What a fantastic lesson. I just found your channel and I learned more about combining Rythm and Lead in under 10 mins than I have from the last 3 years of my quest to become a proficient electric guitar player. I have been playing guitar since I was 8 years old, mostly folk, country, classic rock and pop from the 70's, 80's and 90's on acoustic. In the last 3 or 4 years I have started on a quest to live out my dream of mastering the electric guitar. I am fairly proficient with the Pentatonic, Blues and Diatonic scales (including mode). Right now I am working on Chord Progressions, Nashville Numbering, Triads and phrasing. My goal is song writing. THIS!! THIS!! THIS!! is the key to unlocking the ability to write solos. Thank you so much.I am now a new subscriber and follower of your channel. 5*****
Hi Jack, what a great lesson is this one!! You just open my eyes and made me very clear how to solo in a simple but very smooth way over chords changes! Thank you very very much! And keep up the good work! Cheers,Ron
Learning to play root+3 together going the progression. I'll definitely work on creating lines that link those together. Much appreciated humble maestro! Love and respect bro.
Thanks Yuri!
Excellent. Very clear and fundamental, yet so much if understood and practiced :)
So simple and so very effective. Well done.
I can't stop repeating that very first solo at the beginning of this video. Man that carries so much emotion, you touched me somewhere deep down.
Wow what a teacher youve made this so simple Jack thanks a million👍
Thanks Jack. This might just be my "break through video tutorial". I've known, for a while, about targeting the 3rd or 7th, but didn't really know how to do it. I think I understood this. Thanks again; from England.
What an amazing Lesson. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Excellent lesson Jack. Really very cool! Thank you for posting this.
Glad you liked it!
Great lesson
Beautiful............I learned a lot today!!
Your approach of explaining gives me encouragement to learn guitar. Thank you!
Great lesson! Thank you 🙏 You have given me a path to investigate.
This really speaks to where I'd like to move to next in my guitar journey. Thank You
Simple but powerful. Thanks Jack
wow. Thanks for breaking this down. You've made it seems really simple and straight forward. Now I need to go try it and see if that's the case... :)
Lovely little lesson packed with so much Thank you Greetings from Qld Australia
I just found your channel and really enjoy your teaching style. I'm looking forward to all the tasty licks I'm going to learn by watching your videos. Thanks Jack!
Awesome, such a simple roadmap.
Great video. As a bass player, I will often play the third rather than the root which helps to fill out the "feel" of the song 👍
Wow, I like this approach, nobody ever told me about it. Thanks.
One of those guitar videos that is immeasurably helpful 👍🏻🎸 Thank you
Excellent! Thanks for the clear explanation.
Brilliant and so clearly explained.
You are greatly appreciated sir. These are excellent lessons. Thank you 💯🎸
Hi Jack!
After an 8 year hiatus to raise two stepkids (on of which is named Jack!) I'm just picking up the guitar and playing again. I discovered you through Brett Papa which was an outstanding lesson. You have a wealth of knowledge regarding my weakness of playing over chord changes. Thank you for sharing this information with all of us seeking to push through to the other side.
Immediately subscribed and thankful for you.
New fan from Texas!

Jack, this is the first time I've seen one of your vids and it was great !!
Nice lesson!
That’s awesome sir, just awesome. Thanks. 👏👏👏👏
great job, Jack. Keep going
Thank you man. Thank you.
I’m in!! “Playing over the changes” oh lord, have I seen MANY videos and MANY you-tube guitarists talking about it again and again and… Especially one guy, who plays amazing, great guy, buuut he talks A LOT about it. The more he talks, the more I get lost. Then Im back a few days later, to a new session of talk and playing. Then…. you shows up. And with your calm being and great way of showing and explaining, it suddenly makes sense and I can understand it. THANK YOU. Not only are you a great player, but also a great teacher. And thats the big difference :-)
Hey Jack, I just watched this video and thank you for taking time to show us this.
You're welcome!
Very straight forward
Always brilliant thank you
A gem of a lesson Jack , many thanks 🙏
Thanks Gary!
