Thanks for getting me addicted to this game again. I've binge-played it almost the entire day, and I now know what you mean with loud rain.
I've been placing locations everywhere to catch my breath (literally) and usually add one or 2 floors to make them easier to spot from a distance. This helps a lot to prevent me from getting lost.

I picked up a tip on reddit, instead of adding a 2nd floor to make it more visible, just throw up a windmill on top of it, the spinning catches the eye, plus its cheaper to build, and i guess you get a lil energy.

I only ever launch the T4 GPS. I never waste resources on the lower ones. Better to use those resources launching more pressure or heat rockets.
Since 1.0 the first meteor always lands where you are when the meteor storm starts so moving after you launch the rocket is always a good idea.
You should make a trek to the crater. You can get about a dozen Iridium rods on the meteor itself along with some Super Alloy scattered around the center area.
