  • Hey Everybody, B-rad here. Today I am working on my new to me Mantis tiller. I picked this up off of Craigslist for $20.00. I poured gas in and she just leaked out the carb. Ordered up a tune up kit on amazon for $15.00 dollars and installed it. Thanks for watching, hit the like and subscribe if you would like. Thanks!

    Thank You so much for the video. I am a 66 yo woman , know nothing about engines, watched your video and got confidence to fix my tiller that has not worked in 5 years. And I am proud to say that it started after 2 pulls. I am ecstatic!

    I got a 7225 model Mantis at a garage sale yesterday for 5 bucks. Starts when I spray starting fluid into it. Gas lines/carb all gummed up. Great video 👍🏻

    Very well done. I completed the rebuild in about 45 minutes actual hands on time. I was working on a 7222 Mantis 2 stroke that had been sitting in a basement for 6 years. With that $14.99 plus tax kit I got an almost $400.00 (cost new) machine up and running. I appreciate the sharp focus and steady camera.

    Hey B-Rad thanks for posting this great video. My Mantis is about 20 years old. Five years ago I tried to get it working to no avail. I had pretty much given up. I found your video and ordered the little parts kit from Amazon. $17.99. It took me about an hour and a half to clean up my dirty ol Mantis and get all the old parts off and the new parts on. My biggest challenge was the fuel tank which had old fuel mix in it that had gunked up in clods that were stuck to the inside of the tank. I fashioned a "q-tip" out of coat hanger wire, a piece of shop rag and a rubber band. With some patience and a fair amount of Goof Off I was able to get the tank cleaned out. Once everything was back together I fueled it up with some TruFuel. A little choke action and a pump or two on the bulb and it fired on the third pull! Works like new man! Thanks!

    My 10 year old Mantis wouldn't start this year after working ok last fall. I saw this video, ordered off Amazon, and followed your video to a "T". Thanks! Mine started up right away. Couple of tips I'd add for other novices like me. If it won't start, check to make sure the gas lines are intact inside the thank. Discovered my old ones had got brittle with age and the one going in had snapped off inside the tank, so no fuel going in, no engine firing, LOL. Also, getting the new gasket to stay seated correctly so it doesn't slip down and block one of the screws to reattach the carburetor, is tricky. I solved by using two very tiny drops of glue between the gasket and the carburetor to set it in place, just be careful you don't put too much or put it to close so it spreads into the engine. Great video, thanks again.

      @denonpmb 4 года назад

      Just assemble everything on the two screws before you reattach it and the screws will hold the gaskets in place.

    When it idles to high and the throttle screw won't adjust it Fon then you are running too lean on the low speed jet. Turn it out until the idle goes down. Then readjust idle screw and repeat the mixture screw if needed to idle and run/start as needed.

    The hose with the filter goes on the bottonof the carb. the top one is a discharge line

    • @allrock1238
      @allrock1238 4 года назад +1

      The fuel filter hose with the in tank filter that sits in the tank bottom (It's important its new and present as they will partially plug and cause a fuel flow restriction that can make the engine run very lean at high rpm. A lean mixture will will damage it from lack of lubrication. if the engine revs then bogs its lean and this issue must addressed this can also happen if the high speed mixture setting is turned in too far or the low speed needle setting is set overall too lean as this impacts the transition from low speed to high ) is small diameter. The carburetor fuel "return" hose is the only larger diameter hose, its very hard to get them reversed but I have seen people manage to do so with a lot of effort as the filter pickup line is will not fit over the larger diameter upper carb return nipple on the primer bulb housing at the top of the carburetor, The third line goes to the white vent valve assembly that sits in pocket in the red plastic upper engine housing pointing up with the hose at the bottom , this is because the fuel cap on this tank has no vent on a mantis so this valve controls tank pressure and allows it to vent as fuel as drawn from the tank otherwise a vacuum will form and the unit will quit.. the tank is a sealed system that is supposed to be slightly pressurized when the engine is running the carburetor creates this pressure through the return line, if the tank is not sealed to hold this pressure the unit wont have proper fuel delivery so the fuel cap and fuel hose grommet must make a good seal that holds pressure..

    I saw on another vid how they adjusted the idle with the tynes off. Until the crankshaft /axle barely moves then put on the tynes . Not sure if that changes the mixture.

  • @magicone9327

    Great little tillers except that the tines are always in contact with the ground. Big pain when tuning or just warming them up as it wants to move.

    There's tubing or something connected to your gas cap underneath. Mine's disintegrated. Is that important? Also some gas mixture left in tank probably few years. What is best way to clean out the oily dirty residue? Thanks. Well done video!

    • @BRadWilson3
      @BRadWilson3  3 года назад +1

      On the gas cap is a plastic string that holds the gas cap from falling on the ground when refilling. Not important. The old gas just swish around some new gas in there and pour it out on some cardboard or paper towels and let it dry and then dispose of. Thanks for watching

    • @chrisrageNJ
      @chrisrageNJ 9 месяцев назад

      I know this is an old video but you can get varnished up old fuel out of a tank with mineral spirits or paint thinner. Fill the tank with enough to submerge the sludge, or if it's really bad, fill the tank halfway, shake it up for a bit, let it sit for a while, and repeat a few times. If you have some marbles or ball bearings, or even some small nuts or rocks, it'll help scrub the sludge off of the tank walls. Long bottle brushes can be bent to fit into the tank and scrub odd spots as well

    Thank you so much for the video. I was wondering if you could tell me where the kill switch wire attaches to the mantis after getting mine out for the season it has been detached from the motor?? And cant figure out where it attaches back.thanks so much

    • @BRadWilson3
      @BRadWilson3  4 года назад +1

      There is a connecter under the gas tank that then leads above the carb and into the top cover, looks like you have to remove the top cover where the pull start is.

    Please always remove the tine assemblies before starting with a new or rebuilt carburetor. Sometimes they start at high rpm, so taking the tines off first is much safer. Good video!

  • @n9vo
    @n9vo 2 года назад

    First off you shouldnt have pulled the mounting screws out. If you had just loosened them enought to pull carb off you wouldnt have had to deal with choke and washer. Did you loosen screws before recording video. Yours seemed lot easier than mine were. Pretty good video though.

      To set the gap on the flywheel just use a business card in-between the magnet and coil. That's what I do at least. To see if the switch is working unplug it and check with a continuity tester.
