- Pilgrim Sailing Speed Record 2017. On our way to Galeria, Corsica to take shelter from a strong mistral wind, we sailed the Pilgrim pretty hard and managed to beat our old speed record.

Just come across your video. Marvellous. Way back in 1975, I was fortunate to sail on the first Raka of George Payne. It was a delivery trip from Plymouth to Padstow. Richard Bumpus was skipper and Tony Meakin, another friend of his and myself made up the crew. It was my first sail on a Wharram and I was building a 34ft Tangaroa, the cruising equivalent of the Racing Raka, the fastest of the Wharram’s at that time. We managed to average just 16 knots from lands end to St Agnes head and then we had to slow down as the wind started to increase requiring reefing. The exhilaration of sailing these boats at sea with big waves cannot be excelled. Fair winds to you. Robin Fautley ex PCA sec.
Awesome. The rooster tail says it all!. We had (pahi 52) Hecate holding around 18 steady on the delivery back from Greece to UK, off the coast of Portugal... flew down 1 wave at 21.3 at which point one of the steering blocks exploded! With complete loss of steering she just rounded herself up nicely despite the breaking 5-6 metre quartering seas, no broach at all... just sat there and drifted sideways until we had replaced the broken block and ....off we went again (with a bit less sail). A testament to the great tracking & seakeeping characteristics even at high speeds and also in an emergency - catastrophic steering loss in that situation would have been game over for many boats I suspect. We have slowed the boat down considerably since by adding weight and windage in the new deck saloon pod... bit drier and a lot more comfort for those offshore passages!!!...but still hit 13-14 occasionally. This also reminds me of delivering Tino & Catherine (Rawnsley/Selby)s Tiki 31 Brillig from her mud berth in Weston down the Bristol Channel to Wadebride... 10-11 kts steady and occasional bursts of 12-13. Bonkers fun. This is a classic Wharram vid!! Thanks.
Well done Jacques, you do test your boat. Don't think we would ever have the guts to keep going in those conditions. Those slim hulls and canoe sterns do slip through the water easy. Boat is looking good after refit.
i was just thinking was there some work done the boat looks so fresh.. and did you notice the top speed for this boat wow.. L.A Rob
Awesome! Thanks for pushing the envelope and sharing what is possible with these amazing craft! Your record is safe from us guys, we tend to reef at 15 -18 knots windspeeds. Just an incredible bit of footage from you guys again! Cheers from Stew and the crew on Luckyfish
How did I know I would find you here ? LOL ⛵️⛵️ 👋 😎
Congratulations on this amazing speed record on your beautiful Tiki 38, well done. Very inspiring.
Nice one. I sailed for 20 years with my dad, who built the Tiki 26. We clocked topspeed at 16.4 on the North Sea from England to Holland. Great job & compliments on the footage. Greetings from Haarlem.

Awsome! How about exposure to the elements. Sun, rain, cold etc. Is there a version with shelter.
You clicked the link then :-).
Owners have created many different "shelters" - check this one: ruclips.net/video/vdr_yBH-Xig/видео.html
