That is the point! You MUST be able to see that it is a puppet. But that's only if the puppets, especially Kermit together with Jim Henson, are in the picture.
The amazing "unsung" talent is Frank Oz. When it comes to character voices Frank Oz actually had more to his credit than Jim Henson. He was Fozzy, Miss Piggy, Sam Eagle, Animal, he was Yoda in Star Wars and Aughra and Chamberlain in the Dark Crystal, he was Bert, Cooke Monster and Grover, plus many minor characters in the Muppet movies, the Muppet Show, and Sesame Street - the list is huge, beside the fact that Frank Oz also played several (living) character rolls in several movies like The Blues Brothers, Superman III, and a bunch of others.
Not to mention that Oz is also a really competent director as well, since he directed The Muppets Take Manhattan and co-directed The Dark Crystal with Jim Henson, as well as classics such as Little Shop of Horrors, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and What About Bob?, and he even has directed more overlooked comedies like Bowfinger and Death at a Funeral. He definitely is an extremely talented man, that's for sure.
Just started using a puppet on our RUclips channel and quickly realized how much of an art-form it was! Great respect for those who do this professionally!!
This is a Good Memory. I just can't believe Jim Henson died 2 months after this. We all really miss him alot. R.I.P Jim Henson (1936-1990). His Legacy still Continues.
I'm pretty sure he knew that. He knew that Kermit was the Muppet closest to him. He was created in a most tumultuous period of his life: the impending death of his maternal grandfather. He proclaimed that Kermit was the puppet closest to him. Kermit _was_ Jim.
Bittersweet childhood memories 😥 i didnt even know what death really was but i remember feeling very sad when my mother explained to me why the muppets on the tribute show were so sad. Henson productions had the best scriptwork with the unique humor that contained adult jokes that went right over kids heads lol
I love seeing Jim with Kermit! Only if I consistently think it do I see they are the same person, otherwise my mind just tells me I'm seeing two similar yet distinct personalities. Doesn't matter if Jim is no ventriloquist and his lips move, Kermit is as alive as he is - was :`( Jim Henson, still greatly loved, still greatly missed! - Just one of the millions of children Kermit and Jim helped raise.
It's like Walt Disney with Mickey Mouse. Just like how "When You Wish Upon a Star" is the anthem to Disney what "Rainbow Connection" is to the Muppet properties (Sesame Street, The Muppet Show / Muppet Babies / Muppets Tonight / the.muppets, Fraggle Rock, &c). In the same manner, "(It's Not Easy) Bein' Green" is to The Frog what "The Mickey Mouse Club Alma Mater: The Mickey Mouse Club March" is to The Mouse.
Ah, well.. you hardly see his lips move underneath that beard... Also I think nobody can even keep his/her eyes straight on Jim when Kermit starts to talk... Especially because Jim is also looking at Kermit, very intrigued. He indeed made Kermit alive and made him in the most favorite frog ever!
There’s a big difference in puppeteering and ventriloquism. Due to the nature of how they filmed, all sets being on elevated platforms, it didn’t make a difference whether they knew how to perform proper ventriloquy. If you haven’t seen anything from behind the scenes of Sesame Street or the Muppet show it’s quite fascinating I would definitely check it out
I grew I up watching the Muppets, and I think I always knew they were puppets, but even now watching this it is hard to believe it. They seem alive. Jim Henson was amazing and the people who worked with him are also amazing.
I was devastated when Jim Henson died. I firmly believe that the Muppet movies got me interested in how films were made. especially The opening of the Muppet movie. it's one of The most beautiful, magical openings ever. it's also technically brilliant.
To quote a book i read long ago on this subject. "The audience isnt the only ones that need to believe the puppet is real" One of the most important things in puppetry is to understand that your puppet isnt just a puppet. From the moment that you give them a voice and a personality, that puppet is wholely an entirely different being. This is why puppeteers generally hold their puppets to such a high regard. Because should anything happen to them, its almost like losing a friend. This is also why Kermit in this video looks, acts, and feels like a whole different person. He acts like a person, moves like on, etc, even if youre looking at Jim while hes making kermit talk, instinctively, you want to look at Kermit instead. And its entirely because he is treated like another person, even by his puppeteer.
The tap dancing bit and others like it, where something is happening just below camera and the Muppets are doing something with their feet or at foot level, but you KNOW they don't have feet and you KNOW what's actually down there is a puppeteer, but you absolutely believed they were dancing or stomping or jumping or whatever... it's magical. EDIT: I also wanna mention how much I love that people always, ALWAYS reply to the muppet who's talking, not to the puppeteer.
Thank you Jim Henson for providing these Fun Muppets for not only kids to enjoy but grownups as well. As for Kermit the Frog, here in my country he's René la Rana and it has become a status symbol to have a stuffed Kermit the Frog in our homes, gave one a coupla years ago to a li'l girl, that li'l girl has recently married this July 2019 and.....she still keeps her René la Rana with her! :)
The Muppets were JimHenson' Genious and creative masterpieces. No one else has the same creativity or Dream that Jim, had. You cannot take someone else's talents and passion and continue the dream and future unless you have the same gifts and passion to carry it forward. Unfortunately, Disney has not. They will suck every ounce of souls and heart out of Jim Henson's dream until they move onto another project to suck it dry... R.I.P. Jim Henson and the Muppets! Thank you for your funny sense of humor and your beautiful souls of the Muppet Company. You taught us a lot!
I know a lot of people aren’t really into Kermits new performer Matt Vogel, myself included, but when Kermit talks at the end he sounds pretty close to his new current voice.
Jim was dying here. Matt’s Kermit sounds like a dying Jim Henson’s Kermit with a cold, but it’s 75% a regular Man’s voice. Steve whitmire overall still sounded closer, if you look in the right places. He too was a little off at times as well however admittedly.
Sadly this was made just before Jim henson's untimely death the muppets have never been the same since when Jim died they lost their heart and soul when Jim died Steve Witmire took over Kermit when Jim Henson died in 1990 and has been the voice of Kermit since
+Eric Purkey Kermit was changed to a down-trodden producer, who doesn't even get time to sing "It's not easy being green". I guess being hit by Miss Piggy all those years really got to him.
Until this year, when both the Henson children and the Disney company fired Steve Whitmire for problems that've exasperated over the course of several years. Not sure what this means for Steve's exclusive characters, like Rizzo, Wembley, and Sprocket whenever they're used for promotional work.
+TherealRNO - Was it ever confirmed that Henson's kids had anything to do with it? After all, Brian Henson chose Steve to begin with. My understanding from what I read on Steve's blog is that it was entirely a Disney thing. But we'll see -- Fraggle Rock and Sesame Street aren't owned by Disney.
It was confirmed to official Muppet fan websites like MuppetCentral and ToughPigs that the Henson children cited that Steve had been problematic for years, so it wasn't just a Disney thing.
It’s really difficult to see these puppets as fabric having grown up watching them as a child of the early nineties. Kermit and the gang are real people and it’s hard to see them otherwise.
I wonder who did the tap-dancing for Kermit? JIM? Now, as I see Kermit, I wish Jim could have lived to see Darci Lynne Farmer (Winner, America's Got Talent) . I keep imagining him and Shari Lewis looking at that girl in AWE. She had the Muppet motions and the ventriloquism DOWN. They would have been so proud!
Johanna PoirotFan_FictionFan I don’t believe in reincarnation, but if I ever did, I would believe that Jim was reincarnated as Darci Lynne Farmer. Two amazing puppeteers!
Neither do I, but I would go with either Jim or Shari Lewis. Darci has Ventriloquism down and the Muppet nuances! She could be their artistic god-daughter.
Jim Henson was a genius. Kermit the frog I heard was Jim Benson's "alter-ego". I was huge fan and avid watcher of Sesame Street and the Muppet Show when I was young and all thru my childhood. Sesame Street was my escape from problems at school and it provided joy, comfort & love these beloved Muppets gave to me as a troubled child coming from a broken loveless home. May God bless Jim Benson's beautiful soul for creating these precious Muppets.
Most people don't even know what to do with their own body language, especially their hands.. using your hand to give an entire other person their own distinct body language takes a kind of talent and... _endurance_ that boggles the mind.
In the hands of Jim Henson Kermit is a REAL. Jim never professed to be a ventriloquist; he didn’t need to, Kermit was so real that you never even looked at Jim when Kermit was talking.
Even with the smallest of movements and Jim clearly seen holding the puppet, Kermit still feels real
I love the way he always positions his feet so it can see like he’s standing up.
It’s because the small movements act as details and those details make it believable
That is the point! You MUST be able to see that it is a puppet. But that's only if the puppets, especially Kermit together with Jim Henson, are in the picture.

FilmmakeroftheFuture Hey! What does that make me?
To refer to a star as just a hand is almost as bad.
I wonder if Jim Henson knows he sounds just like Kermit The Frog.
Odd, huh?
I'm pretty sure he knew that. He knew that Kermit was the Muppet closest to him. He was created in a most tumultuous period of his life: the impending death of his maternal grandfather. He proclaimed that Kermit was the puppet closest to him. Kermit _was_ Jim.
