A sublime performance; great 'old school' conducting; so much more muscular than than those placid and etiolated and effete and fashionable 'original instruments' performances that have no muscle. When rehearsing the 'Haffner' Symphony No. 35, Toscanini called Mozart: "A real man.'" (A conductor would not e 'allowed' to say that today and would be sacked on the spot; though, many gay men on dating websites always call themselves a 'real man' - or that they are 'straight acting' and are looking for a 'real man'). So many gay me today are deeply homophobic. What were the other works in this concert... Is it available on CD?
I couldn't agree more - strings with vibrato, a proper strong sound, no chopping notes short - how Mozart deserves to be done - the so-called "authenticists" have just succeeded in making Mozart's music sound ugly and, for heaven's sake, it is anything but.
I think it's a good performance. However, I just don't like the sound of the old Vienna oboe. Because it's the tone of Schalmei (Shawm) itself. This also applies to Leningrad conducted by Mravinsky. This flat, non-intelligent tone detracts from the dignity of the music.
Great performance period.
