Sorry to disagree with everyone, maybe i just don't have the heightened musical sensitivity,as most listeners55 and though it a well written piece it lacks the sweep and dark feel

And leave it to Szell to insist on an old-fashioned snare drum with gut snares, even in the 1970s going out of fashion.

Absolut richtig!

I enjoyed hearing this. I like the way Szell keeps the pulse moving throughout the piece - he doesn't flag or get too caught up in the beautiful moments where the temptation might be to linger a touch too long. Some might find it a little too unsentimental, but I think it's just right.

Haydn wrote this great C-major Sinfonia (‘number 90’) during the summer of 1788 as a part of a 3-sinfonia contract for the Concerto pour le Loge Olympique in Paris commissioned by the Comte d’Ogny (which included Sinfonia Nr 91 in E-flat composed at roughly the same time that Mozart was composing his last three sinfonias (E-flat, g-minor & C-major) - these two giants transformed the Sinfonia into a new art form altogether - having started out as ‘opera overtures’ and Haydn was at the forefront of the rapid stylistic development of this genre (along with the String Quartet) in the 1780s & 1790s-what a glorious time for Western Art Music !!

That immediate alertness, precision, and "life" in the playing of the BSO here also routinely characterized the playing of the PSO under Steinberg (I first heard the PSO under Steinberg in concert in Pittsburgh in the fall of 1966). Neither orchestra necessarily played like that under other conductors, so we must attribute it to Steinberg himself. I wholeheartedly agree with the comments below that he was a very great conductor. When I feel like being thrilled, I still reach for his last movement of the Brahms 2 (see ruclips.net/video/XYB2OWnTiOY/видео.html, posted by Addiobelpassato, with some great archival photos of Steinberg).
