it was anti-military, portraying the reality of how the japanese military is to blame for japan's involvement in the war. its about the population picking up the pieces after the military ruined their country. not sure how anyone sees that as nationalistic. is it even possible to be an anti-military nationalist? that wouldn't make sense.
and yeah, involving the american occupation would have been too much. especially after the disastrously bad casting of the "american" character in Shin Godzilla. a high profile american politican, daughter of a U.S. president, her name is Patterson, yet its obviously a japanese person that has no idea how to pronounce english. its a huge blemish on what was otherwise a very good and immersive movie. i suspect it has something to do with hideaki anno being a manchild and that badly cast actress being obviously very attractive.(i dont blame the actress)
