I absolutely loved this show. Seldom does one get to see a show in which all of the actors are individually funny as well as funny in group settings. I live in America and I find that British comedy is so much better than ours because it reminds me of a time when comedy was funny, not raunchy. Because of this show, I started to look for other British comedies and I found that there were quite a few, like The Black Adder, Fawlty Towers, As Time Goes By, Are You Being Served and several others, but Keeping Up Appearances is my absolute favorite, so much so that I purchased the entire series on DVD. What a great show.
finally we americans can get to know the actors behind the characters on "keeping up appearances". it is a joy to see them talking about their lives and about the sitcom we've come to love.
Completely agree - I love the standards such as Keeping Up Appearances, Vicar of Dibley, To The Manor Born, No Honestly, Good Neighbors, and others... great, brilliant writing and excellent actresses and actors. All Classic.
Waiting For God about real characters inhabiting a retirement village loving laughing adventuring, fighting off fear and finding new adventures in our later years! It's marvelous! Romantic and hilarious, starring Stephanie Cole's and Graham Crowdon oh my such chemistry, he was 86 playing 86, she was 50 playing 66 but check my facts everyone should see this in their 40s and every year for the rest of your life!😋
Scripts have gone so far down, that it can't get worse. They covered all manners of depravity on sitcoms (US) so they (I haven't watched TV for several yrs, and don't miss it at all). I watch old series on You Tube.
I think Sex in the City was crude & unwatchable. And I didn’t watch it. There was no finesse on that show. We got rid of cable tv because of the smut and crap on it.
I absolutely LOVED this show (Keeping Up Appearances) and it's fascinating to hear the contributions the actors made to developing the roles. I absolutely agree: the script writing set this show apart (particularly from modern ones now).
+Wes Benter i sort of agree but it's all subjective really. even without the genre restrictions TV has always been a hit or miss... and these days we have reality tv which wouldn't even be so bad if there wouldn't be SO MUCH OF IT like reality shows about everything! REALITY SHOWS ABOUT PEOPLE WATCHING TELEVISION I AM NOT SHITTING YOU THEY ACTUALLY DID THAT IN MY COUNTRY WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH HUMANITY?! *ahem* sorry about that.
I agree Wes! I started watching "Keeping Up Appearances" when I was in 7th grade (around 1995. My partner and I still watch her. We just call the show Hyacinth. :-)
There was scene where Daisy is reading a romance novel, Onslow says "why d'ya keep read'n stuff like that?" Daisy: Because it's me last foothold in romance, I get very little practice, so I can a least keep abreast of theory"
Judy’s character on Keeping Up is a character like no other, and she does it brilliantly! Oh, they are ALL brilliant. Without brilliant writing, there’s nothing to watch between commercials. Buy the DVD set! Brilliant, I tell you.
Ik! Been going through the DVD set which cheers spirits up ☆♡

Keeping up appearances was great show! ...Anyone remember Daisy's horrid dish rag? Hahahaha! I'm from the Chicago area (midway between the city and the cornfields to the west) and until I saw Daisy and Onslow's awful home and neighborhood I pretty much assumed that the entirety of England looked like the Yorkshire Dells in All creatures great and small. How wrong I was. lol
I loved all the cast of Keeping up appearances :) Wonderful people and extremely tallented actors. I have so much pity that ale the series was so short...
I remember Judy Cornwall in Moody and Pegg from the 70’s. I must have enjoyed it as I remember it so well !! Maybe it’ll resurface on Talking Pictures ☺️
you are so right on the scripts they make today i have said it so many times all they know how to do is put swearing in instead of coming up with a good shows which i don't watch at all.i love all the older shows they have a great script and no swearing, and most of all class and also i love british shows most of all they are so funny without swearing ,i just love this interview with you .you were my favorite person on your show
Judy speaks FACTS!!!! The classics are the best. Modern comedies if you could call them that simply can't compare. Vulgarity, sweating and nudity doesn't equal talent.
It's not just that a lack of talent that brings them down but alot of the comedians and celebrities today shoot themselves in the arm for coming out and making a political statement about climate change, black lives matters, diversity or LGBT etc. Robert Deniro, Barbara Streisand, Jack Black just to name a few. Why can't they just shut up and keep their political views to themselves, politics and religion are private matters. I lose all respect for them once they start shooting their mouths off in public about political matters or pushing their own agenda. I have to admit Patricia Routledge and Judy Cornwell are not part of this elite cancel culture that want to bring back communism and take away our freedom, these old actors and actresess know how to respect their fanbase.
Agree totally....little talent today when it comes to genuine comedy, most is crude and poorly written. Traditional British comedy has always been tasteful and never vulgar, funny with out being crude and written with intelligence, same for older American comedy shows also with greats like Carol Burnett, etc. Today's stuff is rubbish so we don't watch any of it, give me the old stuff any day!
I totally agree. Writers don't know how to do great scripts without swearing.. look at golden girls and frazier.i always watch keeping up appearances and as time goes by. Very little is funny on u s tv today. I watch very little tv now.
Believe it or not, most people in the US have senses of humor that closely aligns with British humor. Unfortunately, the vocal (and wealthy) minority in our country decided that things must be over the top to squeeze a laugh out of viewers.

Miss Judy, you lovely lady. I will never forget Ounslow in London West End production Run for your Wife, that time worlds longest running comedy show at it's 9th year.
Bit of trivia: I forget the name of the film, offhand, but a young Judy Cornwell plays girlfriend to Fabian (the 60s singing heartthrob/wannabe actor) in a movie where Fabian is an up and coming race car driver. Yes, at the start of her career, Ms Cornwell played "ingenue" parts. BTW, not really sure Hyacinth was the brainy sister, she was just the one who had ideas about how she thought HER world should function. Some of her ideas were somewhat daft. And Daisy and Rose? I have sisters like them, well, Hyacinth too, I suppose. But Daisy is our favorite. And Rose? We put up with her quirks. Hyacinth? We often wonder if she was adopted.
that scene when Judy Cornwell and Geoffrey Hughes were in bed together and Onslow was talking about Daisy being a Liverpool supporter, that scene just killed me hahaha! Onslow was so offended lol. Being a Liverpool supporter myself I just loved that scene
I loved the scenes when Onslow woke up in bed and told Daisy how he kept having nightmares about Richard being in the clutches of a big horrible monster who wouldn't let him go lol.
I agree with her too. Personally, I blame the lack of decent scripts on nepotism. Some crude idiot with no talent - but whose dad or uncle has the power to get him hired - gets a job writing, and all of the "yes-men" in the system tell him and his influential relatives how "brilliant" he is. Then other people imitate his "style" hoping to sell their stuff to the same market, and the standard drops like a rock. It's a shame.
I miss the show on Saturday evenings I would try to act. Out on the p hone when my Friend would call, (I have caller Id),so I would go into the act, "Bucket residence man of the house speaking.
so true that profanity is an indicator of bad writing. wish Hollywood would get that message so we can safely return to the cinema. last three movies I've gone to, I've asked for my money back and rec'd it. good scripts are full of ideas and concepts and talent...that's worth watching!
Judy is spot on about modern comedies in the main, they seem crass, base, nasty and frankly boring, I'd sooner eat burnt toast than watch Ali G, Ricky Gervais, Jimmy Carr and that ilk. I'm only 47 but prefer the classic, surreal, inventive and thoughtful comedies from Buster Keaton, Jerry Lewis, Dick Van Dyke Show, and classic animation, although We Bare Bears is fantastic. KUA was a marvellous show, the actors got so much out of the script, bringing it to life in the most perfect way possible, it was cosy, quick, a social satire and some great one liners, and the scene with Daddy in the spacesuit never fails to make me laugh. Poor Daisy eh with Onslow, never got the attention she deserved, he was too busy with the horses and Open University books lol.
she sounds almost quite posh compared to her character in the sitcom. intersting views. dylan moran, stewart lee and norm macdonald all swear but no one would say they are crude, or lack wit or intelligence. lee and macdonald are so razor sharp, they are considered comedians' comedians. moran is the most lyrical, intellectual and poetic stand up comedian's i've ever seen. You don't seem to comprehend the genius it takes to pull all of these characters off! Without their responses to Hyacinth or the sisters hyperthroidal responses to their own lives & their sister,, these highly trained & skilled actors would have nothing anyhere near as exhilerating as Hyacinth is to react off of! She & her insane pretentions are the glue; they all respond their own ways to her nutty ideas! Richard, I believe, secretly thrives on the chaos that seems to attend Hyacinth's every project! His work is dull, and everything she does is bigger than life; she has an ersatz fantasy that Richard likes being part of or he would leave her! She is utterly deluded but each sister and her husband is deluded as well! Richard is well taken care of & she is a cozy armful! & he knows she would be utterly unable to survive alone! I loved the episode showing the softer side of Hyacinth when she gets high on some estate sale wine the duchess made they all have some & Hyacinth calls the wine by a number of malaprops! Swell episode I felt fond of her! She is a classicly trained actress and singer Which is rare in this world!
@@carolvogelman5261 .. What the hell is your rant all about? Did I say anything against Hyacinth? I listed my favorite characters, nothing more. Yes, they played off Hyacinth. That's obvious. But that doesn't change my appreciation of those characters. I also don't agree with your assessment of Richard (a lot stronger than you imply), but that's not the point here.
Judy Cornwell is a brilliant actress. Even though I've seen the series "Keeping Up Appearances" over-and-over, I still watch it.
Judy Cornwell is so generous with her input and praise of other actors. Her critiques of certain styles of writing are spot on.
LOVED! Judy Cornwell in 'Keeping Up Appearances' !!
Judy Cornwell and Geoffrey Hughs made me laugh on "Keeping Up Appearances." Daisy and Onslow did it for me.
Oh nice! 😂🤣😂
And I loved that shaggy dog who lived in the junker in the front garden. It would scare the heck out of Hyacinth with its barking. It looks like Gremlin on Doc Martin.

Have you watched Last of the Summer Wine? It is delightful, especially seasons 4 on.
I also have the entire series on DVD. Bought it years ago. I love Call the Midwife as well and have season 1-12 on DVD.
Fantastic actress, she will always be Daisy to me.
Rumpole of the Bailey (TV Series)

Gary Daniel Miss Marple episode, I think it was called "The mirror cracked twice".
She did a great mrs . Claus to
You are so right.. Her character of Daisy ( 'Dais' to Onslow) will always shine through . She portrayed such a loving caring person
