  • Prairie Dunes is excited to share the following video that masterfully illustrates the beauty of the golf course we are fortunate to call home: “Maxwell’s Masterpiece: Prairie Dunes”. We want to extend a special ‘Thank You’ to Andy Johnson and @The_Fried_Egg for your tremendous rendition that captures the beauty, history, and how special this hallowed ground in the heartland truly is. We hope you enjoy this portrayal of one of the best classic golf course architecture demonstrations in the country by Perry & Press Maxwell.

I started playing Prairie Dunes shortly after learning to play at Quail Creek in Oklahoma City in mid 1962. Born in Hutchinson in 1946, my family lived in OKC from 1954 forward. Having family and friends in Hutch, we were constant visitors. My godfather was Frank Jackson Jr, a social member and non-golfer. That being said, he was always able to get me on the course and I took full advantage. One of the first times I broke 80 and the first time I broke par were both at the Dunes, cherished memories to be sure. I visited the pro-shop with Wichita friends maybe 5 or 6 years ago and the experience was like a time warp, almost nothing had changed for me except I am certain that I would no longer hit a 2-iron on No. 1, don't even own one...LOL !!

Hi Ed, thank you for your story and the OKC and Prairie Dunes connection. Hopefully you've played Twin Hills off of I 35/OKC? Love that Maxwell course...has that noble Maxwell allure to it. A cousin of Southern Hills in terms of special topography and how Maxwell routed those courses.

It is quite a treasure and one of those destinations with nothing else in the middle of nowhere. I used to make the trek every spring from Chicago . A very tough challenge, the topography of hills and the course being built on natural dunes , you better be a solid ball strker
