  • Removing the old, original incandescent bulb taillight assemblies on my utility trailer with LED brake, taillight, and running lights. This set also includes reverse lights which may not be necessary for many of those with a 10-foot landscape trailer, but where I live, it's extremely dark at knight and the more light I have available when backing up, the better. The light kit would also be suitable for RVs, camper trailers/travel trailers, boat trailers, and boat trailers.
Also added auxiliary backup lights to the side of the trailer as well for better side visibility. Unlike the standard 4-pin trailer connector that has connection for only running lights, brake lights, and turn signals, this uses a flat 5-pin harness which allows connection of the reverse lights. The 5-pin flat is commonly used with trailers equipped with electronic lockouts on the surge brakes in order to disable brakes when in reverse. In this case, the signal is used for reverse lights.
Instead of adding a separate 5-pin connector to the tow vehicle, which is factory-equipped with a a 7-pin, a 7-pin round-to-5-pin flat adapter is used which makes use of the middle contact, which is the reverse light signal.

The addition of the white LEDs on the side is an excellent idea! I was surprised at how much if. Difference that made. This will definitely be part of my next trailer retiring project as well as on my list of upgrades to any functioning set of trailer lights. It is quite often that I find myself backing trailers in dark places where extra light would help! Thanks for that tip as well as the info on the rarely used five flat style wiring.

Solid move adding those extra reverse lights. Gonna look into that myself now.

Looks like I'm a little late to your project, but if you find those side mounted reverse lights distracting or hindering you can go to any contractor that installs aluminum fascia, flashing or eaves trough, grab a couple of small scraps (preferably white on one side), and form the scraps into shields to direct the flow of light while keeping it out of the operator's eyes. Other than that, I love the addition of the extra lights.

Splice into the wire for the reverse lights. I used the quick splice connectors like these:
