Studying Linguistics in college, and having lived in Kansai for more than three years now because of work, I don't understand why the Kansai Dialect defaults to becoming the Southern Accent in English dubs and English subtitles. There are so many other accents, like the Boston Accent, that hits the same pitch tones.
I was studying abroad in Osaka and lo and behold, while at the shopping strip in Tenroku (Tenjimbashi Suuji Roku-Chome), my residential director asked if anyone knew about South Park’s connection to Osaka. Thanks to your video, I outed myself as a South Park fan to my program when I knew the answer was the Osaka-ben dub XD I took a course and studied Osaka-ben while in Japan, so the boy’s Osaka-ben in Bigger, Longer, and Uncut always makes me laugh more than the English version (but that’s also my nostalgia for Osaka shining through too.) Your video is a confluence of two unexpectedly connected and niche things that I love, and it’s a perfect microcosm of why I love the internet. Thank you for sharing this video with the world!!! ╰(*´︶`*)╯♡
I remember the original japanese dub is less swearing than movie one was broadcasted before..i think it Probably WOWOW make this for his young-audience since 2000s years. By the way you know if someone make tumblr of the japanese dub of the show? i remember to see somewhere but i can't find anything now or it was closed long time? i was interested to see again the japanese dub but is gone.
From what I know it’s also more censored than the original considering cultural differences between both North America and Japan. Also I think I’ve seen you elsewhere.

My only problem with it is that the songs usually remain in English. I was disappointed by Weight Gain 2000 and Rainforest Shmainforest for that reason, would love covers for those songs. Happy they dubbed all the songs in the Mr Hankey episodes though!
Fun fact: in the Japanese dub of South Park, Kyle is voiced by Usopp
I get their decision in doing this.Cartman at the very least in the original version has this vaguely southern accent
