  • I'm excited to announce a new small On30 layout project that's a spin-off from the original Thunder Mesa layout. The Goldfield & Calico combines the old Calico Mountain section with a newly imagined narrow gauge line taking inspiration from the ghost towns and short lines of the Mojave Desert. This new project is intertwined with the reimagining and redesign of the Thunder Mesa layout and both projects will be moving forward at the same time. Hop on board "The Mojave Miner" for a ride back in time to the early 1900s!
    Thanks for watching, amigos!

For those worried about the TM2.0 or Bandit Canyon Ry. or other of Dave's projects, did they question Picasso when he started another painting? Did Davinci stop at the Flying Machine or Mona Lisa?! BUILD DAVE! BUILD!

In Europe, we have a BD about Lucky Luke, "The man who shoots faster than his shadow".
Dave is the man who starts layout projects faster than his shadow! Most amazing is that you finish at least 50% of these projects at incredible speed.
I'm looking forward to see the Shay working hard on some big ramp.

As a Californian (and a Knotts employee!) I'm delighted that you'll be representing our distinct Mojave desert look on this new layout. I do love the red rocks of the Colorado Plateau too, but it's even better to have both!

Suggestion for a workbench Wednesday - how do you create a logo that feels right? That Goldfield & Calico logo looks like it would fit right in on a line of dusty boxcars rolling through the desert.

I love the idea of having another layout with another "theme" that still interacts with the main layout. It's refreshing, without feeling totally disconnected from everything else. Excited to see the kind of locomotives that will run here! Maybe even some 2-8-2s or other larger, more gruff looking machines might make appearances?

Dave, I live your new concept and idea for Calico and Calico Mountain. While I watched the video I again thought about how I notice when working the BNSF property and contract mapping project Bartlett and West Engineering worked in 2013 and 2014. What I noticed was whether the subsidies were standard gauge or narrow they were almost always named someplace and Santa Fe. This included the Parent Railroad the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe. This held true in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California.

    • @ThunderMesaStudio
      @ThunderMesaStudio  4 месяца назад

Of course. But the Santa Fe, Denver & Carolwood is a play on the Santa Fe & Disneyland Railroad. That's one case where the "Santa Fe" went first!

We were just at Knott’s last weekend for the Peanuts Celebration. Calico Mine Train had over an hour wait, so we bypassed that. We’ll be back in couple of weeks for the Boysenberry Festival and all that great food. Best part of being a Knott’s Annual Passholder is there aren’t no reservation needed like you do at Disneyland- And Knott’s annual pass was about 1/16 of the price of our Disneyland Magic Key annual pass. But we still go to Disneyland every week!

My only suggestion: I think you might want to put the depot on the mainline. It'll keep that area there more "yard like" and give you the ability to tell more yard stories (like having cars being repaired).

I just found your channel and I really like the style of your layout. Growing up, I was into model trains but now I am into 1/18 and 1/24 rc rock crawlers. I love how you carve your rocks and I would like to build a similar style layout for rock crawlers instead of trains.

I have been along Highway 395/14 from Carson City down to Lancaster, through Death Valley, and the scenery is downright spectacular and begs to be modeled. Glad to see you taking up the challenge with this layout, and also re-using part of the old Thunder Mesa too. As for the switch to "nowhere" currently, I love adding in the idea of expansion, even if you are unsure if it will ever become a thing.

Just outside Beatty Nevada is the Rhyolite ghost town . I think you would like the railroad depot. It's in very good shape, in arrested decay, maintained by the BLM. Several other structures still there, including a restored bottle house.

Dave - this doesn’t really have to do with this video specifically… But yet it does. I was watching Adam Savage Tested YT channel where he answered a viewer question about what he thinks is the next big thing for Makers. His answer was about how much 3D printing has gotten as it is now more of an appliance and so much easier to use. But…. The issue is how does one take what is in there head as a 3D object, design on a screen that is 2D and then get it back out to the 3D printer to a 3D real object.
He then pulled over his Apple Vision Pro and said he hoped this could be the answer. One could design their object and be able to virtually walk around it, inspect it, adjust it, etc. and then be able to output it without having to learn or use CAD software.
I think I recall you do not own a 3D printer, but this could certainly apply one day to using a laser printer. Interesting because I could defiantly see this happening relatively soon. And once Apple gets the price down for the Vision Pro to more in line with a MacBook Air, this could be a huge benefit for the home hobbyist “maker”. What are your thoughts?
I watch Adam Savage’s channel all the timer, and I think any kind of maker would find his videos fascinating and useful. He often talks about what they had to do on Myth Busters to get things to work right, etc.
The link to his video is here: ruclips.net/video/wDkcfrKI-kY/видео.htmlsi=PSN5FSYXsc-2Ikui. - only the first few minutes he talks about this.

I would like to ask you "why don`t you implement the Station (as u say Depot) into the flow / Track. now you seperate it. that will create alot of Shunter work. my Idea just to be creativ: from the tunel commig passed the track crossing place the depot including a Evasion line. Forget the 2nd move from the turntableto the line. may u place the Blacksmith there. ... put the engine Shelter on the track near the Slope Mountain. only an Idea. thanks for your creativ work and influence. I tell U what boy. ... u are guilty - why I rebuild my layout.🙂 greatings Wolfgang from Germany

I just love your videos and skill but I have to say that it seems your voice is eq’d so extremely that it sounds like it comes through a telephone.
Wondering if that is an deliberate choice or a “quality” of the mic or camera you are using? The music sounds full and great and I think your voice has much more richness that could come trough with a little work. Levels are ok. It’s purely eq. (Sorry, audio nerd here)
Keep up the great work. Fan forever!
