    Aatami Korpi is his name. The Russians called him Koschei, which doesn't actually mean "Immortal" but "Koschei the Deathless" (or Immortal) is a villain character from Russian folklore who is deathless because he hides his soul nested within various objects. It is very similar to John Wick being called "Baba Yaga," who is a famous Russian witch (actually female so Koschei would have been better for Wick). In at least one tale the hero has to seek help from the dangerous Baba Yaga to fight Koschei after he abducts his wife. Hellboy creator Mike Mignola has used both of them in Hellboy related stories.

    Finnish film making is extremely practical 'cause we don't have access to those Hollywood budgeds and in my personal opinion it's the superior way to make cinema as it forces to be creative and the script well enough to let the story carry.

    Second positive review from someone I trust about how good this is. It’s at my town’s theater, and not at my favorite theater and nowhere else close. So, going to break my boycott of my town’s theater, which just has so many things wrong with it, that I haven’t gone to see a movie there (with one other exception) in over five years. But I will see this there. Thanks, Gary.

      It’s in so far based on a true story in that Germans were fighting Finns in 1944 in Lapland. Finland was originally an ally of Germany, but it did make peace with the allies in 1944. But there were still German soldiers in Lapland at that time (fighting the Soviet Union and protecting some mines). Despite the Germans agreeing to leave peacefully, did the situation under pressure from the Soviet Union lead to an open war in which the Germans used a scorched earth tactic.

    As for the meaning of "sisu", you got it right. It's the spirit of gumption and perseverance. It's an old Finnish word, so there's not necessarily a perfect translation in other languages, but I think the English use for "grit" comes close. Etymologically it's the same as saying someone "has guts", as the word "sisu" is related to the finnish words "sisus" or "sisällä", which mean "inside" or "in". Meaning, someone who has sisu is not just "an empty sack" of a person, but someone who has "that something" that makes them go and keeps them going, indeed they have "spirit".

  • @culteducube4108
    @culteducube4108 Год назад +4

    While it is certainly a worthy spectacle of violence, everything in this movie is otherwise absurd and stupidly unrealistic. The germans are stereotypically evil and very conveniently stupid when the plot needs them to be.
    Spoilers ahead: So first if you were to find that much gold, in war times, would you be stupid enough to travel along a road? Now if on that road, after you killed some germans who conveniently insisted that you get on your knees before killing you, knowing that there is a tank (which I can't identify but looks more like a soviet T-54 or similar than an historical wehrmacht vehicle of the time) and some infantry in the distance, would you carry on travelling on that road? Well you would if you need the rest of the plot to happen.
    Now the protagonist has obviously a massive plot armor, and realism is nowhere to be found, as a large caliber machine gun fire won't even go through a dead body he's carrying, and obviously in a hail of bullets, a thin metal plate can be used Wonderwoman style to deflect those bullets, which again conveniently are only fired above the height of the unprotected legs. In reality, even if the bullets hitting that improvised shield could be deflected (which they wouldn't) they would still do massive blunt damage to the flesh behind. Now our main protagonist also has some impressive lung capacity to hold himself underwater for minutes and this is also coming handy when hung by the villains for quite a while. Villains that again, despite having being briefed on the man, and seen him in action for a bit, conveniently leave him without checking if actually dead (or putting some extra bullets in his body).
    I will stop there with the critique, and if you are able to suspend disbelief that much or switch your brain off, then you might indeed enjoy it.
