  • A totally unplanned video chatting about my mini crisis right now feeling like ive just 'grown apart' from the Fender Strat. I never ever thought id say this about the guitar that started it all, the guitar that people I still idolise played.... Is this a normal thing... who else has had this on their own guitar journey.. and what did you do?

I'm now 68 and have been playing since I was 15. I have always played Strats and love the way they look, feel and sound. I spent years looking for the ideal bridge pickup and have used mini humbuckers and full HSS configurations to try to find the perfect blend. It took me many years to appreciate how good the middle pickup can sound.
Now I use specific guitars for different things and use PRS twin humbucker guitars for heavier songs.
You should be guided by what inspires you to play.

Ive never yet looked for a 'do it all' type config - although I appreciate the reason a lot of people do. But even outside of guitars ive always been a more 1 tool for 1 job type of person haha

I think like any other instrument, a Stratocaster is a way of expressing what is inside of you. I have owned and played Stratocasters since the 1970s, and since added a few other electric guitars to my family. At times I've put the Stratocaster away because I felt it was somewhat limiting or maybe I felt I was just getting a bit stale in my playing excitement, and moved on to another instrument I have. But after a short time I found I missed the looks, feel and sound of the Stratocaster and went back to it as my main beloved guitar again. I think taking a break from an instrument is pretty normal and healthy, actually.

As recently as 3 months ago I had 3 LP’s, a Tele, an Epi Sheraton, & 3 Resonators. I’ve sold the lot, bar one resonator. Don’t ask me how many Strats I have 🙄Your heroes are my heroes. Been playing over 38 years and I'd say it's just a lengthy phase. There was a period where all I loved were single coils and had tons of strats. Then I got bored and start swapping in humbuckers and eventually got rid of all single coils for buckers in my guitars. After some years though my tone just felt boring and sounded the same all the time. I picked up a strat I was given as a gift, I didn't play because it had single coils in it.. but all of a sudden I was in love with singles coil again. I pulled just about all the humbuckers our my strats and put back the singles and was happy. But, I learned to just branch out and have a variety of guitars with different pickups. Maybe try this, get a guitar with P-90s as you might find them close to humbuckers but with that single coil sound and find a medium. I got Teles, Pauls, Strats even a 335 too, I got some loaded with a bucker in the neck and tele bridge pup on a strat, a strat with 2 P-90s. Just enjoy your buckers at the moment and don't get too worried about it. Have fun keep playing what you like, just keep the strat.. you'll dig it again! Cheers happy playing!

Im sort of going through that phase now thinking of getting a martin acoustic.
But i have a Sheraton which i play for my electric and i was also thinking about getting a strat style guitar for individual note definition because i randomly wanted clarity.
Not sure what im going to do but i find i feel this way when i jave more then two guitars and one gets neglected because you play one more and then you don't look at the old guitar with the same perspective snd it changes how you connect with the sound.
I also think because your 335 is sentimental and a good guitar it also plays a big role in you picking it up

I’ve played for 24 years, if your goal is to improve as a player don’t switch guitars around, just keep challenging yourself and keep improving. But one thing is a strat is a blues instrument, if you’re playing more rock type stuff something else might suit that style.

For me, it’s the tele. I mess around with pedals and have a jag I love but when it comes to writing and just being connected to my instrument, it’s always the tele. It is my first American fender I ever had and it’s very special to me. It’s the first time I ever spent over a grand on pretty much anything (I was young when I got it) and I just spend so much time with it. I must’ve played it at the store every time I went and regardless of whether I’m on the Jag or playing acoustic or another guitar I have around, the tele is still the workhorse. There’s something primitive about it that I love. You can get so much tone from a block of wood with a neck attached to it 😂

I also can tell you that I have heard a lot of rave reviews for the Danish Pete telecaster and that even people who opt just to get the pick ups rather than the full on guitar have told me that they’re very happy. Past few years I have moved over to playing Les Paul and SG (that nice one I got from you). I also have kinda moved to using a pick after years of no pick. I think it's a good think to change with how you feel and where your playing is at. As musicians we should always be led by our ear and how we feel - play what you love.

For me I have 4 guitars, I have a Player HSS Strat & Sheraton 335, Seagull S6 Solid Spruce Dreadnought Acoustic, & a PRS SE Silver Sky. I deem them exceptional for the intermediate value. I just merely had to own around 7 guitars buy & sell before I knew what I love and don't. Though I just enjoy the Sheraton 335 the most if I had to keep just one. It has a great clean that sounds fantastic, even if it isn't a stratocaster replica in tone. It has a vintage sound and I guess more versatility since it's got the humbuckers & coil splits. The body and size is so comfortable to play too. I do like Les Paul Classics but you just sort of weigh up your favourites. I'm even thinking that having more than 3 guitars is too many and you get overwhelmed with which to play or wither your effectively playing all what you have. I swear I remember I watched a video where Tom DeLonge said something about that less magnets or less pick up's give a cleaner tone, I think some people have questioned if a SSS is cleaner in some way with the configuration. So I maybe wish my Player was a SSS though.

Still love both, have picked up a few guitars along the way - the P90 + Humbucker Duesenberg Starplayer is lovely, Lollar P90s in my Casino a whole new world and right now I am eyeing the Eastman SB59/v and Fender Am Pro II Strats . . .
