  • The Senate race between Ted Cruz and his challenger, Texas congressman Beto O’Rourke, has become a symbol of the battle over a state that Democrats have long wanted to turn blue. So when 16 Texas voters - half supporters of each candidate - came to face-to-face, it’s no surprise a national issue like immigration dominated the discussion.
During a VICE News panel convened by pollster Frank Luntz Friday in Dallas, participants talked about their impressions of the candidates and the issues animating the campaign. So far, O’Rourke has drawn a record fundraising haul and lots of media attention, but polling still shows GOP Sen. Cruz slightly ahead.
Cruz has attacked O’Rourke for proposing making so-called Dreamers American citizens, which Cruz says would put the interests of immigrants ahead of ordinary Texans. Cruz has said his own views on immigration boil down to four words: “legal, good - illegal, bad.” During their Sept. 21 debate, Cruz said the U.S. should do everything possible to secure the border, including building a wall.
On Friday, panelists supporting Cruz agreed. “There are sovereign countries that have laws. Obey those laws,” said John Percha III, a 49 year-old aircraft mechanic. “You can’t just walk in and do whatever you want.”
“America is like a lifeboat,” added Paul Lidberg, 52, a sales account manager and game designer. “And at a certain point if you bring everybody into the lifeboat, the lifeboat sinks.”
But O’Rourke supporters said that anger over the state of the immigration system is misdirected - and that immigrants themselves should not be blamed.
“I guarantee you, as a mother of two boys, that I would do everything illegal, legal - it doesn't matter what it is - to get my children into this country,” said Angie Byrnes, 47, the owner of a marketing consulting business.
Angelique Mayers, a 46 year-old customer service agent, proposed penalties for people who hire undocumented workers. “Why do we demonize the people that get lured here by business owners that have jobs waiting for them?” Mayers asked. “Why don't we do mandatory prison time for anybody that hires an illegal alien?”
Eight of the sixteen panelists had at least one parent born outside of the U.S. But that didn’t mean all panelists wanted to loosen immigration laws.
“Should there be a path to citizenship? I'm Hispanic, and I don't think so,” said Josue Gonzalez, a 32 year-old security contractor and Cruz supporter. “Maybe consider giving them status to stay here legally but not impact the voting, the platform for either Democrat or Republican.”
Julio Rios, 47, an unemployed Cruz supporter and the son of Uruguayan and Cuban immigrants, said that the country’s roughly 12 million undocumented immigrants should be put on a ten year work visa, with an annual fee of $1,000 to maintain the visa. The money, Rios said, should be used to fund a border wall. He called the plan a “modified path to citizenship.”
Asked to describe the candidates, supporters of Cruz called him principled and steadfast. Critics called Cruz smarmy - a word that Cruz’s supporters later used to describe O’Rourke, too, along with “socialist.” O’Rourke’s supporters called him compassionate.
Last week’s confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court also came up. Sophia Percha, a 48-year-old realtor and Cruz supporter, said the Democratic Party had hijacked the #MeToo movement and pursued Kavanaugh without proof.
Challenged by another panelist, Sophia Percha said she herself had survived abuse. “However, I would not blame this person sitting next to me that he did it because he looks like the type that did it,” Sophia Percha said.
One panelist said that the Kavanaugh hearings had ensured she’d vote Republican.
“Before the Kavanaugh thing, I probably wasn't going to vote. But this Kavanaugh thing is going to turn out a lot of people, because I think they did him totally wrong,” said Jennifer McCann, a 47-year-old customs broker who supports Cruz but often votes Democrat.
“If they did him wrong, they’re gonna make all of us wrong,” Percha added.
O'Rourke and Cruz will face off again Tuesday night in a televised debate.

Manny EHC and giving tax breaks to normal citizens, small businesses and helping the american economy overall. People like you think the highest corporate tax rate in the world is going to make a country "rich". Trump took the brakes off.

    • @Elitistb616
      @Elitistb616 5 лет назад +5

What tax breaks to normal citizens? That giant tax break bill gave virtually nothing back to the vast majority of Americans, and most companies just used it for stock buybacks to enrich their boards and dividend shareholders. If your company doesn't make tens to hundreds of millions minimum, you barely got anything.
We have the highest marginal corporate tax rate in the world. Small businesses don't pay anywhere close to that, and due to all the loopholes that lobbyists insist on, the largest ones pay even less. What America has for a corporate tax rate doesn't matter when most of the profits are squirreled away overseas.
Meanwhile, back in the 50s and 60s, the corporate tax rate was almost double what it currently is, and the top marginal personal tax rate was around 60-70 percent. And the economy boomed well after the wars.
Tax breaks need to go to where the majority of economic activity is, and that is for the bottom 70% of wage earners, and the amount of the break should always decrease proportionally as the person gets wealthier. Rich people are already doing fine, no reason to make things easier for them.

Seeing as how the 14th amendment has nothing to do with illegal immigrants, it would not be required to be repealed. Please stop talking about the law if you have no real knowledge of it. Court proceedings take into account the laws at the time of the alleged crime and therefore the law that was current at the time of his parents entering the county would be the law the case would be determined by. In other words to let you understand what I am saying, if they suddenly made it illegal to eat candy on Halloween it would only be illegal for folks to do it after the law was enacted, it would not be used to imprison everyone before then. Is that something that equates to your level of intelligence? IF not try this, if the legal age of consent goes up to 25, the court can only convict those after the change in law for being with someone underage. It could not be used to criminalize those already having dated or marrying someone below 25 before the law came to be.

The Beto supporters have charged language just like the Cruz supporters, but each person in there seems to have their own uneducated idea about the wall or Cruz. No one argued against their points about his lack of effectiveness or pursuing legislation as a senator.
The Cruz supporters are right in that immigration is not some easy fix, and maybe the Beto supporters are too willing to accept immigrants as if there are no consequences. They even seem to disagree about if there should be immigration legally.
The issue is overall the Beto supporters are not 100% on point and do get personal about Cruz, but they are looking at Cruz's record objectively as well. No Cruz supporter brought up Beto's policies. No Cruz supporter has looked at what Beto has done as a House rep. Its on Beto to prove worth to the people, but the people won't look at his history, and Cruz can sit comfortably because he has been in the seat and is a comfortable preservation of the status quo for Texans.

"Look at all the jobs Trump has created" Low paying/no healthcare jobs that keep Americans in poverty, not to mention that he's continuing the job growth that's been going on since 2010, but he's created less jobs than average. Obama had an average monthly job growth of 217,000. Trump's is 189,000. Businesses are also taking their tax cuts and moving jobs overseas.
Food stamps have been decreasing since fiscal year 2014. They rose because of the recession, and have been declining ever since. That's not what the memes say, but that's the truth.
Corporate welfare is at an all-time high. They're blowing up the deficit with trillions in tax cuts for the wealthy, and they're not turning around and investing in people.
This is while prices on nearly everything are going up because of this insane and nonsensical trade war.

From Forbes as well---trump takes in 175 million a year from state owned entities like the Commercial Bank of China who rent space from him in many of the buildings he owns. Because of this China has granted the trump organization 39 trademarks for his company since he became president. He charged the secret service who protects him to rent rooms and pay for greens fees at his clubs when he is there, so he is basically making money from the government people meant to protect him. And the Saudi government recently bought an entire floor in his hotel in washington dc for 12 million dollars and trump himself said at a rally in alabama in august that the saudis buy apartments from me they spend 40 or 50 million. enough proof.

For example, during the Cold War, the CIA helped the Guatemalan military overthrow their democratically elected president and later provided training to the paramilitary groups responsible for genocide against the Mayan people. This, lead to an increase of Guatemalan immigrants to the US while in El Salvador we provided help to the Contras who have been accused of human rights abuses. Furthermore, our deporting of young Central American boys who grew up exposed to US gang culture has lead to the rise of MS 13 in countries like El Salvador where they constantly extort businesses and committing acts of violence towards women. Furthermore, the War on Drugs has only fueled the market for illegal drugs which has lead to organized crime groups in Latin America having an all-out war for control of drug smuggling routes.

We have the option to blame each other or we can do our best to understand each other. And with understanding, we can move forward with policies that everyone can at least accept. But to your point, yes the GOP is way out of step. They continue to push bad policies that end up hurting everyone except the rich. However, you can't put the blame completely on them, the Democrats have allowed this to happen. Neo-liberalism has been the order of the day since Reagan, and a lot of Democrats have lined up with their hands open.
