@Tony Hargrove...Obama is progressive but any Democratic POTUS would be stymied by stonewalling of the GOP Congress. In summer of 2012, during the re-election campaign, Mitch McConnell stood in the Capitol Rotunda, on national TV, and pledged the rest of his career to the failure of Obama's Presidency. Nuf said? If O'Rourke or anyone else faces that kind of opposition, they'll do no better than Obama, if as good.

thank you, i just said i respect him very much. I'm pretty sure in another comment on another O'rourke video I said that i feared he'd turn texas into california. I am a big believer in conversation and i believe he is to. I went to his town hall in july in el paso and challenged him on guns, healthcare and immigration. but instead of attacking me, he addressed me respectfully and afterwards we talked and he said he respected my civility. He's a good guy, and I respect his philosophy but that doesn't mean I agree with his policy. there's something El Pasoans have in common that changes the way we look at immigration, so that may be why i'm more open to his immigration policy, but that's it.

    • @capkronos00

Andres Carrillo Yep that's exactly it. Someone can disagree with O'Rourke on his policy stances but he seems like a decent, respectful person. MisterCool She lost because she was the exact opposite of Beto O'Rourke. If she was actually against corporate bribery she would have almost certainly won. Obama spent his political capital on healthcare, and his Senate supermajority was so tight that the corporate Democrats there would sink any campaign finance reform, if the conservative Supreme Court wouldn't have ruled against it regardless, so early in Obama's term.

    • @mistercool3859

No she lost because she campaigned on following the same policies of the hope and change candidate that was Obama. Many people didn't want that. +Tylr ??? they thought otherwise in 1776 - then they had the rule of a monarch (and a British parliament that represented money, trade, landlords, and aristocracy). In the new American Republic around 40,000 white males with at least some property had the right to vote. So it was by no means a democracy.
But the PEOPLE over time demanded more participation. They were the ones how had to fight and die in the Independence War after all.
The more modern idea: every adult gets ONE vote. The regular people are as foolish, ideological and selfish as the former monarchs, ruling feudal overlords, artistocrats or the 1 % in the former colonies in 1776.
But there is something like swarm intelligence - and the selfish interests of all are taken into account and weighed against each other. We still have very rich people, they are a minority (the 9,99 % according to the Atlantic: The New American aristocracy).
The majority has NOT OPPRESSED the rich and wealthy. But in human history it was always the other way round (and is the case right now as well despite having democracy in a formal sense, the rich have way too much influence because money has undue influence in elections).
The interests of the companies are NOT per se more important, the economy does not only consist of corporations.
The economy has to serve the people not the other way round. Corporations are not natural things, the rule of law allows and protects them.
Corporations act in narrow self interest - but society can rightfully demand that the concept of having corporations at all must serve the the common good.
And the interests of rich people are not more important that all the other (the "mob").
The upper class, the privileged and well educated (= not the mob) do not show more wisdom, foresight or moral fortitude than the rest.
I think if there was a benign, wise leadership to be had, people would chose it (the wise and kind dictator aka absolute monarch) - it never has been availabe, never will be.
So the rule of the mob - hopefully with a lot of accountability - is the next best thing. And an informed electorate. With access to information. The corrupt gatekeepers of mainstream media can be circumvented by the internet.
Ideally when the majority ("mob") rules it makes sure the interest of ALL is considered.
Rich and powerful people are doing just fine, no matter the society they are in. It is the regular people (the little people) that need help against exploitation. That's why Republicans are so against "big, bad government". They represent Big Biz even more than the Democrats and get paid by them (campaign donations, cushy jobs when they leave office).
Sure government _can_ be bureaucratic and corrupt - but it stands between citizens and the RULE of the UPPER CLASS and BIG BIZ.
The rule of the "new aristocracy" (The Atltantic wrote an excellent article about it -search with aristorcray ) - or more accurateely that ONLY THEIR interests count.
Government CAN be made accountable and can be voted out (admitted the party duopoly very much promotes collusion between the parties (both of them) and the Big Money interests.
There is no political competition. Voters have no choice. Where do you go as Conservative if in your state an Evangelical and a Democrat run and you do not find yourself represented by either.
On the other hand corporations ONLY answer to the owners, shareholders. The organizing principle in our economic system is GREED. The HIGHEST PROFIT, the LOWEST PRICE.
If we formulate it more friendly: SELF INTEREST.
Well that means automatically that a corporation can never take the big picture into account - of course not.
Nor will the rule of an elite (monarch, aristocracy, dictatorship) provide more wisdom. They are all fallible humans, and overstep their power and infringe on the freedoms of others if they CAN. W/o accountability there will be corruption for sure.

Yeah, get the money out of politics yet Beto is taking it in from all places and comers, with a large portion coming from out of the state. He’s getting more and spending more than double Cruz is. Clinton’s campaign has $500,000,000 more than Trump’s, as well.
So, after Beto loses, we’ll have yet another example of how the “money out of politics” leftist trope is not only false in who wins elections, but it’s liberals who violate their own beliefs the most.

About your 2nd point: I don't really know how Medicare is about to work out, since I am not American, but German. What I can tell you about the healthcare system in Germany (and most of Europe) is: It works! I for myself am forced to pay about 90€ (104 $) per month and I mostly don't need it. But in case I break down because of a not diagnosed diabetes or heart condition or anything, those 90€ per month are enough to pay my medical care until I am without any symptoms. Damn, i had a fratured bone four weeks ago and I didn't have to pay anything in the hospital, not even for X-Ray or computer tomography.
So if everyone joins in it will work. Even if you have about 40 Million peoplle joining in it will work for those 40 M people.
Little side effect: My insurance company also pays my workplace the money they lose because I can't work and I still get my salary!

Probably not, as Texas is, despite the state priding itself on its culture of independence, more conservative leaning than it is liberal. Most Texans don't like any gun regulations and pro-choice activism, two things that O'Rourke supports. In addition, The Establishment might not like Ted Cruz, but Texans here love him. We also saw in the primary that Ted Cruz got more votes alone than the Texan voters that voted any of the Democratic candidates. Here's hoping that Texas elects O'Rourke, but I highly doubt it.

It is increasingly obvious (at least via certain social media discussion) that there are irreconcilable differences between fullthroated Democratic Party loyalists and faithless Democratic Party voters on a litany of policy postions as well as the regard of elected officials. One side has a notion that the other should effectively "fall in-line" and "stop being naive purists". The other believes that the party effectively acts like its "too big to fail" and that the party "needs to wholeheartedly represent the people and not be corrupt". In the court of law, irreconcilable differences are grounds for a divorce and I believe that is what the current division within the party merits. IMHO I feel that an effective way to do this is to take advantage of the unpopularity of DJT and the likely, yet not permanent, overthrow of the GOP in state legislatures, governors' mansions, Congress and the Oval Office between 2018 and 2020. Before power is likely obtained in these branches of government, a clear, executable plan needs to be agreed upon by all candidates and elected Dems in order to enact the divorce process.
This can be done via Comprehensive Election Reform. This will include but may not be limited to anti-gerrymandering laws, anti voter suppression laws, voter empowerment actions (expanding election day, no excuse absentee/early voting, same day registration, mandatory-ish voting), open/hybrid state run primaries, campaign finance reform (public finance of elections, "get money out of politics") and electoral college review & reform. However most important to the divorce process, federal and state ranked choice voting need to be implemented. This will nullify the "spoiler effect" lamented by many of those against third-party voting. Furthermore, the Commission on Presidential Debates and other debate/town hall/forum regulating bodies must immediately allow at least Green Party and Libertarian Party candidates on the debate stage. Also, rules must be put into place that make getting onto the debate stage and ballot easier for all hard-working candidates.
In order to receive the immediate party unity that apparently held in such high esteem, it is strongly encouraged that all candidates and elected Dems agree to this Comprehensive Election Reform Pact. Failure to agree could result in consequences (for Dem party) similar to the elections between 2010 and 2016 on all levels of government. Since nothing in this reform is abhorrently objectionable in nature, it should behoove wholesale, fullthroated agreement. Once in power (respectively for each level of government), this Comprehensive Election Reform agenda must be signed into law and executed upon within the first 100 days in power for that branch of government.

The problem is the people who vote republican. They dont do it out of logic they do it out of a mixture of racism, fear for their guns, and because their fathers told them to do as a kid. Anybody else of course compares the two and thats it.
I think if you watch statistics you will see there is a fluctuating number of people voting for democrats or not, but the republican number stays the about the same. A democrat winning is mostly a thing of how much to encourage to vote

If this gentleman can win in Texas, there is little that can stop him. He can bring respect back to the Democrat Party and sever its corporate reins. He is the perfect successor to Bernie Sanders. I hope he sticks to his principles and goes far.

    • @PurpleSwan

You said it. O'Rouke is a much better replacement for Bernie Sanders because I think he is smart enough not to sell out the people who support him like Bernie did when he found out Hillary Clinton sabotage his campaign and then climbed onboard her bandwagon. Yes, the real indicator of his worth will definitely be if he can manage to stick to his principles after he wins election and resist the temptations to sell out the people he represents to big business and the wealthy. If he can do that, he will make an excellent candidate for president one day.

Most aren't, I think. Not naturally, anyway. There's the people from diverse communities who grew up with the frontier mindset of helping other people, regardless of race or background. Most people in the Western half, and many in the eastern half of the state come from that sort of thing. The biggest problem is the communities that are predominately white. They still have that helping others mindset, but most have never met or spent any length of time with someone of another race or background, and thus fall prey to thinking in terms of stereotypes. Politicians like Cruz exploit this lack of knowledge and sow fear of the types of people these small town folks have never met, thus perpetuating the bigotry.
There are, of course, actual bigots out there who hold their stereotypes up as fact even in the face of actual truth, but for the most part it's pure ignorance.
