I've been journaling since summer 2018, and my favorite thing to look back at right now are "currentlies". Every couple of days, I will write down a current read, current favorite song, a tv show I am watching, a food/drink I am enjoying. It's so fun to look back at what I was enjoying at a certain time!

In Nov. 1976, I started keeping a journal. I have done it since then. I just use standard spiral bound, 200 page notebooks ....yep, like used in school. I number them. I have never written ever single day. Once in awhile, weeks go by w/out me writing a single word. I have no rules about journaling. Keeping a journal comes in handy sometimes when I can't remember when something happened....it can jog my memory.
One thing I've always done in mine : I write the date , day of week ,& time of day. Even if I write in the morning, then write later in the day, I make note of the time I'm writing that entry. And I make sure I put the year ,,...if I'm using the same notebook when the new year starts, I'll put the new year at the top of the page.
Journaling is very personal & individualized. There are no rules. You won't be tested or graded on it. Do it the way you feel comfortable. The one thing I think is important......handwriting. When you write by hand, emotions show in your handwriting.....& it will change as you age. That's interesting to go back & see ! For a short period of time, I typed & printed out my journaling. SO regret that !!
Remember, there are no Journal Police. No one is going to correct your grammar , punctuation, or sentence structure. 😄 📘🖋

I do both. First I write it in my notes app because it's easier to type everything I feel and think because it's faster, and when when I write it down in my journal its just understanding more of my thought process and then I let go after it's on paper

I started journaling when I started to hate myself more, this was before COVID. There were so many bad things happening in my life that I hated myself for all of it. So I started journaling to get it all out of my mind, and it helped get the negative thoughts out for a bit. I usually write about all the awful things that go through my mind and my life. I’m scared that if someone reads my journals that they’ll see how much I hate myself and have me sent to an asylum to get me to like myself more. I’m going to a therapist now, that’s also on the down low. But I’m scared if the wrong people find out about any of it, they’ll use it against.

I did a "journal for a month" challenge for december, which is probably not the best way to start because it puts a little pressure on yourself, but since then I journaled baisically every day with only one ore two interruptions! I just needed the little pressure to start because I already knew that I am going to like it. Another tip I have for everyone who wants to start: I also practice my cursive handwriting when I journal. That means that I do 2 things at a time and that also helped me to keep going and make it a beautiful habit :)

The way i was waiting for you to say something, and then you said exactly what i was thinking/hoping you would say, was so satisfying! I liked that someone agreed with how i journal and someone who understands how i feel like with brain dumping about a bunch of different things bleneded into eachother, or like just about my day bc i want to remember it even if its kind of insignificant. Ive been watching a lot of journaling videos latley because i was curious to see how other people keep their journals, and theyre all so neat and organaized and colorful with collages and pens and markers and whatnot, so i absolutley adored when you reasurred that a journal is like whatever i want it to be yk, i dont have to make it a certain way for it to really be a journal. Ive never seen someone think just exactly like me on the topic of journaling so i LOVED this video :))

This is such a great video you went into amazing detail on the different ways you can approach journalling and what you can achieve with it, I love that! If I'm ever in any kind of bad mental state and I can't identity the cause I go straight to journalling and just write a prompting question like 'I feel down because..' and from there just write with no conscious thought about what I'm writing, usually the truth comes up.

If you need to hear this:
    Dont care what you write.
Want it to look nice? Do it. Dont want it to look nice or dont feel like doing it? Dont.
No ones telling you how, and you can always stop. You shouldnt do it because “its part of the lifestyle” or something, just do it to help yourself.
My mom has written in journals for more then 5 years at LEAST, and she wrties whatever she want s and lives with the mistakes. Dont throw the mistakes away, make them better.

Thank you for making this! I love hearing about all different kinds of journaling approaches; they're so inspiring and helpful. The journaling breakthrough that got me back into it after taking a two year break: using multiple journals. I found that I kept stopping when I wanted to change my approach and wasn't happy with what was in my journal, so I started keeping a bunch of journals at the same time, each with a different approach, and I rotate through them depending on what I'm in the mood for. The result was a handful of really lovely, organized journals that I am so proud of and excited to write in! I use some more than others but being able to easily switch it up has been super motivating for me.

I've first had all the thoughts you talked about in middle school. I was so lonely that I just started writing all my emotions on my notes app as a coping mechanism and by doing that I wasn't sad during the day, because it all felt finally clear now that I got all in front of me. In a messy way, just as I like it. Like I did share my experience with friends, when it was just me and myself. I was basically journaling without even knowing it was a thing!! I would suggest doing it to other people and they would look at me like I was too mature for my age, which was true but I've always been lonely and the only reason I didn't breakdown often was because of journaling. No one told me to do it, I just took my notes app downloaded wattpad wrote whatever was in my head. I still have those first notes saved in a wattpad private story, and I still do it today (I'm thinking of switching to a physical journal though, experimenting if it works for me!)

thank you for saying journaling doesn't have to be profound 😩 I feel like in so many other videos people seem to talk down on just stream of conscious journaling or just recording life events (whether they intend to or not) and it makes me feel dumb (which I shouldn't let it but always working on that...) but sometimes that's literally all I need. Profound growth and revleaions don't really come to me while I'm writing In a book but rather when I'm experiencing something or spending time in prayer. I'm so glad journaling is a place of growth and revelation for others, but that's really not what it is to me and that's okay! there are no rules to journaling! just write! ✍🏼

Social media has created this image that journaling has to be pretty and aesthetic and i think that's something that stops a lot of people from starting. It doesn't have to be like that! Just write! Write in book, in a notebook, at the back of your grocery receipt! Anywhere! The point is to empty your head and take it all out! Just start and i know you'll see a difference!

do you journal in silence or with music or something on in the back? sometimes I feel like journaling but also don’t feel like turning off Netflix lol and obviously like you said there’s no right or wrong way to journal, but I’m just curious what you do when journaling🤔☺️

    • @basicallyreese
      @basicallyreese  3 года назад +1

write them to release them from your mind and then REWRITE them with positive alternatives! it may feel like you're lying to yourself or you don't 100% believe the new, positive thoughts yet, but after enough repetition, i promise you will start to believe and manifest the positive things :-)
