    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Rosencrantz (Gary Oldman) and Guildenstern (Tim Roth) play a strict, yet confusing, game of "questions."
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
Much as he would later do with Shakespeare in Love (1998), writer Tom Stoppard delivered a tale of Shakespearean origin from a skewed and unexpected perspective. In this case, it's the perspective of two relatively minor characters from Hamlet, Rosencrantz (Gary Oldman) and Guildenstern (Tim Roth), courtiers who, in the original play, were dispatched offstage before the narrative's conclusion. In Stoppard's script (which he also directed), the two supporting players take center stage as the events unfold in Elsinore Castle. Unable to determine the source of the prince's tortured despair, the duo ponders the question of fate as their predetermined roles are played out. Meanwhile, they dabble in a little verbal tennis and some ill-advised science experiments, and endure the puzzling attentions of mysterious wandering thespians led by (Richard Dreyfuss). Ordered to accompany Hamlet (Iain Glen) to England, the pair learn that the letter they carry instructs that nation's king to decapitate their mentally unbalanced and irksome charge, a revelation that Hamlet overhears.

      The rules:
1.) Tennis rules for scoring: four point minimum to win a set, must win by a two-point margin, deuces broken by two sequential points.
2.) All serves and returns must be in the form of a question or in the interrogative mood.
      a. Indicatives i.e. statements cost a point.
      b. Imperatives i.e. declarations cost a point.
3.) Not all questions are legal and are considered fouls.
      a. Repetition e.g. _What do you mean?_ _Why do you ask?_ _What do you mean?_
      b. Synonyms e.g. _For what reason?_ _For what purpose?_
      c. Rhetoric e.g. _Why are we here?_
      d. Non Sequiturs e.g. _Would you like help?_ _Are you hungry?_
4.) Hesitation on a return stroke results in a lost point.

'Rozencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead', 'Anonymous', 'All is Well' are but a few on my list of recommended films for those wanting 'less canonical' Shakespeare viewing. ('All' is a fantastic paean to The Bard, a sad, slow-paced, exquisitely pastoral take on Shakespeare's return to Stratford at the conclusion of his career in 1612. Though it does take certain liberties with facts, it paints a playful (!!!) 'What if?' picture.)

They'd have 500, 000,000 views...Maybe the general public would get a bit smarter...
