Hey I’m Andrew The Once A Day Farmer, I farm alongside my father on my family dairy farm in New Zealand.
Our Dairy system is quite unique as we only milk our 320 jersey cows 'Once A Day' (hence the name) only in the morning, and they stay outside on grass for 365 days of the year!!

Thank you so much for sharing about the trees and Educating us about the cows I love the beautiful landscapes did you show?
Hi I’m a cattle farmer at Australia Victoria we have same problems with this type of trees so it’s normal 😊
Great to see Mr wonderful the “iron man” picking up the slack while you are making videos.😊 thanks for your great videos!
Nice little pressie at the start of the milk year from your milk purchaser...a nice recognition.
Irish co-ops take note.
😂👍
Hey mate we call them gum tress here in Australia I’ve got them on all my farms we had a massive storm recently an had about 80 fall down the stumps are about as big as your car they would be around 400 years old your ones a little baby’s hahaha it’s good to see them growing well great work! I also use jakoti hand shears an I highly recommend buying a pair I used to use the same shears as you but I’ll never go back after using jakoti shears 👌
Far out that’s a lot of trees to clean up!
I’m going to have to look at trying a jakoti one, always keen to find and try things that work better 👍
Ok I liked your comment that had the calves been in the field it could have been "a little" fatal! I was led to believe fatal was just fatal
yes that’s right! Dry kiwi humour 😂
Awesome video as always Andrew. Looks like dad’s got his work cut out for him. I’d say you were very lucky not to of had more damage, especially if your livestock were in there. Cracking info on the reason the gumtrees were planted in the first place. Great to see your cherry tree with blossom, spring is just round the corner haha, so a bit of rain and a couple of weeks of low temperatures, and that’s winter done. What a fantastic climate you have. No batteries,no electricity, just good old fashioned clippers, and a nice tidy job you’ve made Andrew. Thanks for sharing mate.
👍
Keith Fink has a gate setup you might find useful for when your calves are following you through the gate.
I’ll look into it 👍
Great video again Andrew thanks for sharing 👍
Thanks
Is it just me or are you the twin of Yogi from outback truckers tv show haha, the same calm personality and spitting image of each other
Haha never had anyone say that before 😂👍
Nice
Great modo 👌
Should use birch trees.. They can use up to 800 liters of water a day if I recall right.. A couple of those in a swampy spot and it turns rock solid. They also don't fall over easily, grows fast and is excellent firewood. :)
And they happily grow in a swamp
Interesting thanks 👌👍
So maybe those gumtrees where planted to help dry the ground .got dad doing some videoing?Interesting video and cows looking good and fleshy
Yep definitely 👍
Yeah he does the odd bit but he’s not really good at it….yet 😂
Great vid👍👍 Using a chlorhexidine, glycerine and funnily enough eucalyptus based teat disinfectant. SCC is dropping year on year
Good result!
Good Information 👍
Nice vid
Cheers mate 👍
Great video Andrew 👍
Thanks Gary!
We call them gum trees in NSW, good explanation they can be deadly to people and cows.
👍
That’s the trouble with those gums they tend to fall over pretty easy. With the wet ground they tend to not put down a great root system but boy do they grow well above ground. I do believe there are better variety gums for planting in wet conditions although do we really want Aussie weed trees growing here
Haha yeah exactly!
Our GUM trees in Maryland have a rough bark that looks like a white oak. Our Gum trees are useless. You can't split them for firewood as they are stringy and rip apart. When they dry they are very light and burn fast like a maple. Can't figure out what good they are. Maybe shade?
These ones are also a little bit stringy but with a hydraulic wood splitter there not to bad, they’re not to bad for shade either 👍
Keep the the videos mate I love them!!
Thanks man will do 👍👌
I see your gutter may be blocked in the milking parlour, alot of water overflowing Andrew.
Cool video again. That timber will be very handy in a season or two for the fire. 👌🏼
Good observation but no there’s no down pipes just cut away pieces so it looks like it’s blocked 👍
nice farm
Thanks 👍
We use teatsan plus from aakland chemicals! Chlorhexidine based..
👍
Hi Andrew,
Have u ever tried AHV Boluses for udder health...?
Scc / mastitis treatments
I looked into them but they are pretty expensive so opted to just keep using penicillin at the moment
Maybe crunch the numbers again Andrew, The fact of no antibiotic witdrawal, ie. Milk always in the tank dimishes that figure, along with using them proactivly more than reactively!!😏
Hey Andrew could you let us know what yoy are drenching the cows and amounts of each mineral per cow?
Yeah I’ll do a video on it soon aye, will be easier to explain 👍
what has been your expierence of once a day milking? is it easy keep somatic cell count correct with this system?
I love OAD milking, jerseys adapt well to, it takes a few years to get to where you want to be cow wise.
Regarding SCC, it all depends on your cows really, our isn’t to bad but I’m trying to get it lower
Interesting as always, if you have the time could you do a bit on your colostrum as in do you test before feeding and how you use it on your farm be interested to see your management of it against how we do it in wales thanks
Yeah I’ll try fit that in one of them 👍
@@TheOnceADayFarmer thank you
Hey Mate a good result last night with the All Blacks. How are you going in club rugby, chalking up a few wins. By your build I bet you play prop. Tight head or loose?
Yep you’re right, I prefer to play loose. Season finished at the start of July, but we didn’t do that well only won a couple of games but had heaps of fun 👍
Abs went well, Aussie just couldn’t get over the line aye
would you consider putting "fast exit" in your shed.
Not really because we don’t have the space
What is your outlet for bull calves?
Calf rearers who rear them for service bulls and veil
Super stuff, just wondering gin when you said you are drenching the cows every day, what you dosing them with??
Just minerals and a few other things, I’ll do a video on it soon 👌
Are you drenching them with calcium and magnesium. I'm looking to buy a silage feedout wagon. The McIntosh feeder wagon looks very impressive. What do you think. You featured on Agriland here in Ireland last week. I've been following your videos for a year now. There excellent
Yep it’s a calcium and magnesium drench.😉 plus some other trace minerals.
I’ve never worked with a Mcintosh feeder wagon but they are pretty popular so must go alright 🤷
Thanks for watching them Brian, it’s much appreciated
Nice video, have thought about dropping the trees that are leaning and milling them for rails? On teat x we started using it about 5 years ago and are real happy with it it has a higher glycerin content so you don't have to add much more, the iodine teat sprays really dry the teats out teat x is a bit more expensive but works for us and scc has dropped as well. 👍
Gum trees have a twist through the length of the trunk. Really hard to keep the cut boards straight while they dry out. I would just cut them for firewood to burn or sell. We used to plant them in swamps to help suck up the water.
@@paulhofmann4282 yeah they are not easy to keep straight we did have some success with some once they were only 3 meter rails though.
Never really thought of milling them to be honest but sounds like they’re not the best for it.
I’ve heard that from quite a few people, and I think our tests are a bit dry so will be interesting to see
Hello would u spread much nitrogen fertiliser on your fields. Great video
Thanks! no I don’t spread much. I think last year we used 23 units of N per hectare so pretty low
How many pounds does your average cow milk per day ? I really enjoy your videos
Ooo I’m not to sure to be honest, but Litre wise through peak production probably average 15 and then it tails off from there 👍
Hey Andrew, how do you get on putting that baling twine on heifers feet when they trying to boot ya? We use tape and find it idiot proof, good videos by the way mate 👍🏼
Not to bad, once you get the first knot done it’s pretty easy, and the heifers aren’t to bad generally, yeah I see a lot of people use tape so must work pretty good! 👍
Your idea is much better as I witness a lot on farms they forget to take the tape off and it cuts into the skin! And blocks the blood supply! Great video!
Would you ever send of colostrum samples to see how good of quality it is?
Not really, you can get a Brix refractometer that measures the quality of your colostrum, you can do it yourself with it to. I don’t use one I just go by the look of it 👍
@@TheOnceADayFarmer same as me look colour and thickness, would love to come over to New Zealand for a visit 👌
Hopefully you’ll get the chance one day 🤞
How is milk price there is about from11 to 17 $ in Southwest Minnesota
We get paid on a milk solids basis here in NZ but I worked it out that we get roughly 56 cents USD for a litre
Choice vid mate your cows are so placid my fresians can be drama queens when stripping them yours don't even flinch 👍 teat x is mean mate you will probly notice a drop in your scc to cheers mate from a fellow farmer in the central North island reporoa to be exact
Awesome man thanks for watching!
Hopefully notice some good results but time will tell 👍🤞
Why do you drench them every morning?
That’s how we give them their minerals, and they need it every morning 👍
@@TheOnceADayFarmer can't u use lick buckets and and minerals in the water troughs that what we do in the UK
I use lick blocks for the calves but not for the cows.
Most people use a dosatron now days, but we quite like drenching because we know how much we are giving each cow and it makes them quite quiet in the shed as well getting used to being handles around the head.
I’ll probably do a video on it soon 👍
Hey Andrew A crescent for rest of the world is a shifter or adjustable spanner. Kiwis call them a crescent after the American company who invented them. Cheers from the Atherton Tablelands, North Queensland
I never knew why they were called that until now so thanks! 👍
What's in the drench
Mag, calcium, other minerals, apple cider 👍
i thought persons milk twice a day think of cattle comfort.
They adapt to only once, they don’t let there milk down in the afternoon like cows would if they were being milked twice a day.
@@TheOnceADayFarmer I thought some were dripping . thus to me is letting pressures off. I so feel for the cows comfort. I had a mare horse to be deliverd in 10 days her milk was streaming out in puddles she had so much pressure . Animales sure do make them selves adjust.
most persons that I met did milk twice daily. you got it good where you are. rake care.
gum trees mate some say eucalypts
👍
Just wondering why are you drenching cows
That’s how we give them there minerals 👍
you must loose alot of milk only milk once a day
Not really, jerseys adapt to it pretty well and we’re a pretty low input system so it works well for us 👍
Great video Andrew 👍👍
Thanks 👍
