I was watching the 10th Generation Dairyman in the USA last week and they DNA test all their kept female calves - it gives them all sorts of good info like how much milk they should produce, butter fat etc so they know which ones to keep and which ones to sell on if the have to many - I am sure if you contact him he would talk to about the pro and con's of doing the testing and help you to convince your father it is a good idea - just because it is an added cost and it has to be justified
It is funny how different types of cattle farming changes you wants. LOL With my beef cows I want all the bull calves I can get as they will finish out with several hundred dollars of more value to me. Any live calf still makes for a pretty good day.
Really enjoyed the clip mate!! We’res you located in New Zealand? I live in the states but spent a few years in New Zealand back in the early 2000’s .. beautiful place !! Cheers again for the clip
Can’t wait to see what cow52 who I named Flossie lol has I do hope it’s a heifer calf as would be nice for her legacy to carry on at your farm shame it was a bull calf it would still be nice if you could keep the bull calf I’m going to call it flax x
If you put the disc mower over the paddocks they didn't eat the grass down enough they will clean up the grass cuttings and in turn it will give you an even growth of grass for the next time they are in the paddock
@@brianjonker510 it seems to work on many dairies in Ireland and the few beef cattle farms near me do it which also learned it from a guy that worked on an Irish dairy
Shame she didn't have a heifer for you Andrew but hopefully next year she'll give you a crackin replacement. Love to see the blossom tree behind you at the end of the video. 👍
What do you do with the bull calves? Ye guys in Newzealand have a bad name in how ye treat bull calves. Few Clown farmers hear in Ireland went over their and copied some of New Zealand antics. Giving dairy farming a bad name. I am a dairy farmer and treat all our calves well male or female. I hate big greedy farmers mistreating calves and giving dairy farming a bad name. Great videos you make.

It can be heartbreaking not to get a heifer calf from your top cow Andrew. Better luck next year, do you get much milk fever grazing fresh grass like that?.
We usually don’t have to many problems but they are a bit lighter than I’d like this year which helps on the milk fever front. Thanks Gerry, I’d love to get back to Ireland 🇮🇪 one day hopefully 🤞
I don’t think she’s the most productive but is right up there, just has a really nice udder and teat placement, always gets in calf and comes into milking in the first couple of rows. Plus she’s a good looker 😂
We had a similar girl, my mother called her happy face, she had markings that made her looking like she was smiling, she was a fressian, had 9 fressian heifers and was a great milker and friendly aswell
Bummer she had a bull calf it's always one of those disappointing moments when you put your best cows to really good bulls and they chuck out bull calves after 9 months of waiting Sexed semen wasn't really a thing back in my day It might be worth as you say giving her a go with the sexed semen of she comes into heat early But if she's really good than the embryo option might be a good one despite the cost I was lucky one of my good cows had heifers every single year she was 14 when I left the farm so she had a good few daughters and granddaughters in the herd
Can’t be sensible to flush a cow that does not hold to AI first time even though she might be a favourite. Not just the cost involved but the need to breed from the most fertile stock.
Hey Andrew have you worked out yet how successful same sex semen was percentage wise. Obviously wasn’t successful with your favourite cow. Keep up the good work. 👍Hey where is the farm’s water supply sourced from
Out of the 31 straws I had 12 or 13 hold so not very good, and of those that calved I’m not sure of a few of the calves so duno if it was 100% heifer rate or not sorry
We flushed our best cow this year to sexed semen and she doesn’t settle the easiest got 3 embryos. If you don’t flush her then buy some embryos from a top end cow always good to improve the herd
My favorite dairy farm channel.
Thanks 🙏

Superb weather for the present! One of my two favorites had twin heifers!
How good! I’m not a fan of twins but if you can get twin heifers that’s awesome 👌
Charmans in Napier lists the Honda XR190 seat cover as PVC and Canvas options in their catalogue.
Oh really! Maybe we should’ve looked a bit harder at that 😅 canvas would definitely be the go 👌
sorry you didn’t get your heifer calf from your favorite cow. i love how you still put on a great smile and positivity regardless.
Great outlook and positive attitude
Thanks 🙏
New Zealand looks beautiful

Yep it’s becoming quite popular here as well, especially with the big herds.
👍
I learned a lot from your channel. Just arrived here in New Zealand and I am studying here at National Trade Academy for a dairy course
That’s awesome 👏 good luck with the corse and hope you enjoy NZ 👌
@@TheOnceADayFarmer yes, I enjoyed a lot here in NZ. The country has so much things to enjoy and full of excitement. More videos mate! Cheers!
I could just get me a chair, a piece of shade and just let and cuddle all day in that lot! 🤗💚

Good to see a nice clean 🚲 lol need to get your 🚜 into I see the tree in the yard has come into blossom so spring on the way
I’d love to have a proper wash pad to clean gear more regularly 👌
Too true to true set up a pad in your old milk shed yards now you have good power to it and water just a thought
Yep would be an idea place to have it too
Babies running around with their tails in the air, just beautiful. Your favourite cow has an amazing udder.
She sure does 👌

doesnt work that way

We usually start topping them once it starts going to seed to preserve some quality, don’t really need to top at the moment tho 👍

Hello when you take the eggs and do transplant can you determine the sex prior to fertilization? Have a great day enjoyed your video.
Ooo I’m not too sure, I think you probably could sex them 🤷
Have you had any of your bull calves wanted as breeding bulls for any company or kept them for yourself
No not as of yet, had a contract cow a couple of years ago but nothing really happened with it 🤷
Another YT kiwi farmer, My channels more gaming but good to see another Kiwi.
Which is the grass that you have used for the cows in your field?
V nice farm
Hi I like your video
You should consider getting kaiwaka farm mittens for your motorbike
Not a bad option they work awesome 👌
Would you raise the bull calf from your favorite to keep for breeding?
Was wondering about doing it, but probably not, it’s figures aren’t quite good enough I think
Is the line flour you mentioned hydrated lime for the calf pens?
We use lime flour in the mineral drench for the cows, the calf pens get a zeolite powder which is super absorbent
It can be heartbreaking not to get a heifer calf from your top cow Andrew. Better luck next year, do you get much milk fever grazing fresh grass like that?.
Hopefully 🤞🤞
Haven’t had any milk fever this season touch wood!
@@TheOnceADayFarmer great, you are obviously keeping lots of minerals into them.

Is the XR a 190cc? They are the go to bike for farming in Australia or quad bikes.
Yep it sure is 👍
What happens to the bull calves?
Man you guys grow some grass this time of year grow been slow in manawatu
It’s been really mild and warm which helps 👍 hopefully it starts growing for you this week, look likes it might be quite warm
To Andrew how many bull calf’s do get in a Season tho ??? Thanks Kiwi Shayne in the UK
About 160
what name of this grazing grass
This grass is which type of grass name of this grass
Are your springers on all grass? Don’t bother bulking them up with hay/silage to avoid down cows?
I have been feeding a bit of hay out, and planning on feeding more next year. Haven’t had any down cows so not to bad 👍
@@TheOnceADayFarmer oh that’s good going, maybe that’s testament to good jersey genetics aye!
What was worse waiting for 52 or the wife.Becareful how you answer
😂
Do the bull calves get sold for beef finishing/rearing?
The ones I sell get reared for service bulls
Hello i am from India
Are those full brown Swiss or mix with jersey
No just straight jersey, I’ve thought about trying a bit of brown Swiss but haven’t taken the plunge yet 😅
👍🏻👍🏻
Do you get much cow mortalities during calving
I’ve had 1 so far, so not really
Why don't you keep the bull calf from the cow for a breeding bull ?
Figures aren’t quite good enough, I was thinking about it tho
We only got about 50 cows left 😃
That’s awesome 👌

Hmmm yes and no, she didn’t hold to sex semen but has held to every other years first mating so I’d argue she’s still pretty fertile
how many cows you milk
About 310ish
