  • Learn how to make a hole sheet metal elbow.
To understand it more easy, it´s good to have a 3D vision.
I will try to explain the geometric, i hope you understand. the rest is to transfer the marks to make the template and use it to copy segment by segment for the elbow.
And use the bead roller for the segments to complete and assembly the elbow.

I know this is 3 years old and don't expect Mr Larson to answer this but what kind of tape measure is that where he is able to make his marks from either end of the tape measure.

i understand that the diameter of the pipe is 146 , but how is the radius 98 ?? isn't radius half of diameter? i am new to this .. what is the "r" value and how do you find it?

hi, bean bussy with other things.
so, the radius of the bend is 98. so you can do longer bend and it will be bigger in radius. ( if the pipe is 60mm thick and have 40mm insulation, then the diameter is bigger, like 140mm in diameter). the bend of the pipe is not the same. (if there is long bend (elbow 90 degree) example 300mm in radius, then the diameter is 600mm) you slice the round diameter in in 4 peace. then you have 90 degree slice.

when making large radius elbow, you need more pices. smaal radius elbow less segments. large radius more segments. hope this helped you.

If I Wana draw with the radius bigger than the one you used . How can I expand it for 3 part bend?

This is working with any radius. Calulation is: radius x 2= Diameter.
And Diameter x pi(3.14) = the leght of the circle. (You might need to add the 4th segment to get the elbow litle amother.) ohterwise the calculation is the same.

If you only make radius little bigger. Then you dont need the 4th segment. But if you want to make around 200mm in Diameter and up, then you need the 4th or more segments.

Hi, back in the time when elbows were made, they had a start and end piece in every elbow, and the size was to match the size of the claddings. So, the start segment is straight on one side and at an angle on the other side. The start segment is half the size of the middle segments. In this millennium, the making of elbows skips the start and end pieces because it is faster to assemble the elbow. When making the elbow segment, it is a must to shrink the diameter so it can fit the size of cladding because the segments are assembled at an angle. Connecting a straight piece to another straight piece is best when they have the same diameter.
