"The Stars and Stripes Forever" by John Philip Sousa
Arranged by Guy Van Duser for solo acoustic guitar in 1974.
This is the original arrangement Guy taught to Chet Atkins in 1978, which Chet regularly performed in his shows.

Legend has it that Guy Van Duser "learned" this arrangement from listening to a Leo Kottke recording and imitating-practicing it (in his bedroom) until he could play it, too. Then, years later, he met Kottke and learned that Kottke had multi-tracked the recording.
I like Chet's banter, "This a song I play when I want to get nervous. Sometimes, I get through it!" LOL Chet has inspired so many guitar players through the years, including Guy. That's the mark of a legend. When people want to play like you.
You and Chet are treasures to the guitar community!
I use to live in the Boston area. In the mid 70's, I would love to hangout at the Nameless Coffee House in Harvard Square. The music was great but none greater than when Guy Van Duser took the stage. In 1977, Guy released his first album, "Finger Style Guitar Solos", which contained a live recording of "The Stars and Stripes Forever" from the Nameless. At the end of the track, with all the cheering and applause, you will hear someone yelling "More...". That was me a long time ago...
I was there, too, most Saturday nights, from '73 to '77. I lost my copy of the album decades ago, but I think I remember that "More!"
I first heard this played by Doug Smith, who attributed the arrangement to Guy Van Duser. Incredible guitar playing. I'm sure Sousa would be suitably pleased and impressed!
Thank you Mr. Van Duser. I heard Chet Atkins play this and became a fan of his and he attributes his playing this to you. This is fantastic. Thank you. Maybe one day I can learn it
That piccolo solo is some tour de force, I never lose my sense of amazement when I hear it.
¡Tutoral please!
Been fans of Guy n Billy for well over 20 years. Love listening to them.
Brings a tear to my eye whenever I hear this song. What a truly amazing composition and performance. Thank you!
I remember first hearing this back in the 70's on our local radio station. When I pulled my jaw off the floor with a crane, I started trying to learn it...and fairly promptly gave up, never to try again! Just brilliant, still.
I recently met Richard Smith, and it was clear that he considered Guy a legend. Full marks, young man!
Thank for this! I’m ever amazed that anyone can play like this
You are still the man, Guy! A pleasure to witness this on my computer.

Ever since hearing his landmark recording, "Stride Guitar," many years ago, I have just loved Guy Van Duser's playing! What a genius of fingerstyle guitar! Long may he continue to play, amaze and entertain us!
I too bought the Stride Guitar album back in the 70s after hearing it on a jazz radio station here in Canada. Love this style of music. Wonderful player Van Duser.
That is indeed the most sophisticated piece for guitar.
There are other more sophisticated pieces. Try koyunbaba by carlo domeniconi
I saw Chet Atkins perform this live on Johnny Carson and almost wet my pants! Found it on Chet's album much later after google became popular. Chet Atkins version is also on youtube but not the johnny carson appearance anymore.
I saw Mr. van Duser perform this piece in concert. It is an showcase of jaw-dropping virtuosity, and I am thrilled to see that it can be viewed on RUclips. Thank you so much for posting!
Guy is a true national treasure. Saw him do this live at CAAS this past summer. A group of folks my age befriended me and after the last performance we met in the hotel lobby. Much to my surprise Guy is a friend of theirs. I got to hang out with him. A true delight
Was very fortunate to see a live performance of this song back in the 1970's in Hartford, CT. Was blown away. Happy July 4th everyone!
Chet Atkins credited him for the arrangement of his performance of this.
Picking my jaw off the floor! The level of virtuosity is truly mind blowing. Very pianistic in that right and left hands are equally busy.
I've seen him do this live, long time ago, with Billy Novick on tinwhistle. I have never forgotten it.
I also saw him do this live with Billy Novick back in the 80s at Penn's Landing.
close enough, what the hell..! love it ;-))
The greatest arrangement of anything for guitar, IMHO!!
You havent watched Chet Atkin's version yet
I recommend you watch it
It's Guy's.
Chet Atkins mentioned learning this arrangement from Guy.
BRAVO BRAVO
Doesn't get any better than this arrangement!!
An amazing performance and an amazing arrangement...Jack Baker NYC
Awesome, amazing, outstanding, close enough!
What a triumph this is! So much in there to get right. Fantastic piece and brilliantly installed on the guitar. What a clever devil ye are!
always inspirational!!! Thank You Guy!!
Guy! This is great!
Wow-absolutely killer:)
That was amazing.
WOW. Amazing. Talking about proficiency.
This is a treasure.
Aaahhh. Thanks to RUclips 1/2 speed settings, I learned this from the same guy who schooled Chet Atkins!
Bravo!
Great arrangement.
WOW! Love it!
Brilliant!
👏👏👏👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️
The holy grail of fingerpicking.

Some things I hear clearer here than on Chet's version, that is likely the difference in a large venue and one that is more intimate. Plus the drummer lightly accompanied Chet, and that might have reduced his sound a bit. Very well done, first class arrangement.
This is an electro acoustic version with a piezo electric pickup under the bridge, while Chet's version was an acoustic one. Thence the difference in sound..
Guy plays the piccolo part better than anyone I've heard.
Chet Atkins once commented, '' why do they like me so much '', and here's a good example of what he was referring to -- a guy most unheard of who can play as good as Chet.
Chet flew Guy into Nashville to show him how to play this tune. I wonder how long it took him? He can now say he taught Chet Atkins how to play!
He learned to play listening to Chet Atkins records. He had trouble with the double and triple notes, but his Mom kept encouraging not knowing the extra notes was reverb in the recording.
Good God! I wish I'd pursued my guitar as a teenager instead of pursuing the young ladies.
Brilliant! (oh, somebody already said that...)
You can hear why Chet and this fella were friends.........
Sousa who? The magic is right here.
Also I love how even he looks impressed when he does the piccolo part
Anyone know where to find the full tabs for this arangement?
This doesn't include tabs, but there's a downloadable pdf of the arrangement at the end of this article. www.berklee.edu/berklee-today/fall-2011/guy-van-duser Most of the tabs I've seen only include a portion of the song.
he has a book Stride Guitar with full tabs Mel Bay full tabs buy my copy leave me a note
Amazing. Still like Chet's version a little better.
I wish there was some way to examine this guy's brain. I can't imagine hearing Sousa and thinking ' I can play this on guitar'.
That final section is so hard to play because you have to play the melody _and_ the lower horn counterpoint, thus making it very confusing for those who are so familiar with the main melody. The piccolo solo section is surprisingly easier.
¡Tutorial please!
Rodrigo Antonio Verdugo Díaz it’s in his libro you can buy online “stride guitar” guy van duser
First off---wonderful job---for a contrast listen to Horowitz play the piano solo---you will notice a slower tempo with a little room to breath and more dynamics---That being said--Van Duser arrangement is an amazement for the guitar ---but might be played too fast and could use a little more dynamic range---seems to run together? Might have spelled Horowitz wrong? But when you want to know how to play something listen to Horowitz play it!!!

Perhaps not exactly the Galaxy Class steel stuff from Tommy Emmanuel(circa early 2000's) but clearly World Class no Q. Right up there with Smith & co IMO.

A brilliant arrangement and performance that, unfortunately, Chet Atkins usually gets credit for.

Chet Atkins credited Guy for doing the arrangement, that’s how I got here.
Doug Smith may have done it better but guy Van duiser arranged it.

Chet did a great job on this, but this guy has him beat by a hair, I think.
GREAT JOB! little more practice on the piccolo brake... check out Chet Atkins... otherwise,,, I hope you are sharing your talents with young people..
thestone46 Chet learned the arrangement from Guy!
I think you just smoked Chet Atkins version...WOW
MAGA!
Er, he is having fun with the tune. :)
