Had the firefighters assessed the scene continually then it is possible that they may have recognized the hazards of the smoke or elevator and warned him about it and had two people been with him then when he got in trouble then one of them could go to find help while the other person could remain with him and extricate him and preform cpr thus potentially saving his life.
