Another potential factor in Darylls death could have been that the scene was not properly or contnisly assessed for any potential hazards or the condition of the building or it’s type and that he had been alone. Had the firefighters assessed the scene continually then it is possible that they may have recognized the hazards of the smoke or elevator and warned him about it and had two people been with him then when he got in trouble then one of them could go to find help while the other person could remain with him and extricate him and preform cpr thus potentially saving his life.
A hard set of lessons learned. Learn from mistakes and train hard. Oscar, I believe, would have wanted everyone to be safe and work as a team. A very good review of a sad day. This talk motivates FF to do better, and train right off with the thought of what occured and how to avoid errors in the chaos of fire. I learned a lot. Lt. Rick K. Jr. Safety and Training Officer MFD, Iowa

We were told the story of Oscar Armstrong before our first live burn at the academy.
Thanks for sharing this video. I believe inexperienced FF’s are commonplace across the country and for us it’s only becoming more so. Our department (over 400 commissioned personnel) currently has 31% with 5 years or less on the job. The responsibility of those of us with experience to constantly train and share knowledge with the young kids literally is a life and death reality. Do something every shift with your crew. Train, train, train. Then train some more. May The memory of Oscar push us all not to fail our newbies.
Can’t the city utilize the experience of some of the retired FF to help in training some of the inexperienced drivers and roughnecks?
All fire departments already do. The saying is to be the old guy you needed when you were the new guy.
Thank you so much for the hard work involved in this. Thanks for the recommendations CFD. Thanks LT.
Our pleasure!
