The way that Insta360 prices the bundles and the individual components means that your suggestion to just buy the 4k boost mod is not really cost effective. Insta360 charges $299 for lens mods if you buy them separately. They charge $269 for just the Core (Core Bundle) and $299 for the Core and the 4k Boost mod (4k edition). So, your best bet is to buy the 4k Edition as then you in effect get the 4k Boost mod for $30 vs $300 and you get the updated core as a bonus!
Thanks again Rich for your honest review and conclusion. As we said before, the upgrade just doesn't have enough to be an actual upgrade. This can only be aimed at those without the One R, then it makes sense. So I will sit this one out until the R2, R3 or whatever they call it comes out. You are right about the side door. Mine broke off several months back and insta360 doesn't have any to sell so that is a point against them too. GoPro will come out with their new 360 max or whatever they'll call it this Fall and if it is a huge upgrade, I will jump to it. Thanks again.
I’ve found a big difference in image quality from the ONE R. The RS produces more detail with less compression artefacts. I’ve found detail using the 360 mod with the RS that is just mush on the R. Plus all mods look great with smooth, yet detailed images when the sharpness is set to Low.
@@EatSleep360 One other thing I would say is that the stabilisation is better on the RS. Particularly since, with the 4K Boost module, there's no extra crop when you select the high setting. It also seems that Insta360 improved it from the pre-release firmware. When I received it originally the stabilisation gave some jerky movements during POV shots. However the latest updates make it pretty much as good as HyperSmooth. Although there's a narrower field of view on the i360 than the GoPro. Mounted on a helmet for POV the R still gives some erroneous movements at times.
Yes probably smallrig and Ulanzi will no doubt make some mounting brackets. Hopefully they will come up with a lens guard as well. I haven’t seen anything yet.
Decided to go “All In” on the RS (upgraded from R). Discovered a couple of interesting things - 1) H.265 is no longer supported (they say that would create too much heat with the new processor) and 2) 48MP photos with Pureshot cannot be processed in the IOS/IpadOS app (too demanding for some phones they say) and have to be processed in the Studio app on a Mac. Not sure how I feel about 1), but 2) is frustrating as I have an M1 IPad Pro with 16gb Ram and an IPhone 13 Pro which I am sure are more than capable of processing these files (my M1 MacBook Air only has 8Gb Ram 🤣). I just feel that this restriction places unneeded restrictions in our workflow which is I think what they are trying to fix with this upgrade….
Yes there’s a similar thing with the snap wizard feature it will only work on the latest phones. It’s crazy and I don’t understand why the iPhone 13 can’t process it - seems like a step backwards- wouldn’t be so bad if the desktop software didn’t have all the limitations it has.
I have the One R with all the lenses, Just bought the Rs and it arrived this afternoon, I was looking for the encoding menu to switch between H. 264 and H. 265 like on the One R, that explains it then. I'm awaiting the RS sound mic adapter, but I believe this too will have similar sound quality issues to the OneR and its adapter. From potato jet and this review it doesn't sound too great. Still using a Sony Px470 and BoyaM100 strapped to the OneR for audio. I'll be back with an update
@@patrickpaez8086 Hi, yes the boost lens is a great upgrade over the standard 4k lens, it's very close to the 1 inch too for low light noise. The active Hdr is good provided you have decent light. The only thing I don't like is the RS + boost lens has limited frame rate choice unless you use flowstate.

Very interesting on the record save time on 30min+ videos. I use the one R to record my caterham races and I used to lose approx 45 secs which might be crucial. I guess the faster processor must play a part.
I have just done a test video and it took 1m21 to stop recording, save & restart recording. If the one RS is only 13secs loss thats a big improvement. However I am wondering why it cant be seamless like the go pros (not sure on 360 seamless with GoPro?)
Good catch by Rich on this, I almost forgotten why I went for Gopro vs Insta360 One R, it was the lost footage between files. Guess I'll still have to hold off on purchase until next iteration.
Just returning my Insta360 ONE RS today to Amazon. Had it 10 days. Had a few instances of floating artifacts on photos in HDR, then a few instances where the 360 lens displays massive differences in white balance between front and back lens (to the point where one is nearly black). Then randomly the WiFi completely stopped working so I can no longer connect it to the app as a remote or to edit. Such a shame as I loved the actual camera.
