  • I was bored so I fired up my Atari ST with Steinberg Cubase 2.01, hooked up my Roland SoundCanvas SC-88 and loaded up a MIDI of Sandstorm - as you do.
    If you're not familiar with the legendary Roland SoundCanvas MIDI modules from the 1990s here's a companion post on my blog with a quick introduction: ctrl-alt-rees....
    Any other song requests? Comment below and I'll see what I can do, and subscribe for more #chiptune #midi #atari music madness!

    Nice. I just watched New Order in Seattle and Blue Monday at 120 Decibels, so a nice loud rendition of Blue Monday please. :-)

    One of my favourite pieces even I'm not into all electronic music!

    Right that's it, I'm getting more memory for my ST and plugging in a Midi keyboard to try this!

    The ST was an impressive machine; I would say the only head-turning product Atari produced since the VCS. It also had an incredible software library. I think the ST fared better outside the U.S.; I think IBM/PC-DOS:MS DOS pretty much trounced the HC/PC market here in the U.S., with Apple being a close contender.
    I always liked that song 'Blue' by LaTour... I think it played in that movie Basic Instinct, which had a great soundtrack throughout.

    So it needs to connect to the Sega Mega Drive with one of them special midi adapters and play Sonic 2 soundtrack!

    That Mr. Miner plushie is looking a bit menacing...

    And yes, I have a request... or rather... a suggestion ^-^
    Prodigy "out of space" or "break and enter" or "their law"
    Bear in mind that I know nothing about music, this might be the worst choice ever for a computer like that. So, I won't get mad if you don't even bother =)

      Oh man, some Prodigy would be absolutely bangin' on this setup! Definitely going to get on that... Thanks!

      I’d second that. I’d love to hear “their law” as my T.
      PS: I might unsubscribe if I don’t get what I want 😛

      Maybe "voodoo people" too?

    Just wondering if RUclips recognised this as the original song!?

    Maybe a bit late after two and a half year :-) but what about Amiga Module with you own instruments as wave-samples? Is it possible to download that MIDI somewhere and try to make a MOD or something out of it?

    Very nice.
    Since you asked.
    In the late 90s there was a demo (as in demoscene) for the PC. It was based on Björk's Big Time Sensuality song, though heavily mxied. At least from what I remember. I haven't been able to find that demo again, but if I could hear it through an Atari, that would definitely be something very cool.

      Funnily enough, I might have found which mix of the song it was. Björk - Big Time Sensuality [Nellee Hooper Extended Mix] No idea about the PC demo, but oh well. :)

      I'll check it out! Thanks for the recommendation. Can't beat a bit of Björk.

      @@ctrlaltrees Even if you don't get it to play, listen to the mix, it's quite nice.

    It sounds better than the original one (IMHO)

    Could you play some Fatboy Slim. Basically any song would make me smile. Or perhaps Propellerheads "On her majesty's secret service"?

    Man this is just amazing! Is it possible to use this midi box on a modern pc? Or is it worth using it?

    • @ctrlaltrees
      @ctrlaltrees  4 года назад +2

      Yes, works great with a USB MIDI interface! I'm not sure it's an improvement over just using an SC-88 SoundFont with your media player of choice (VLC supports them for example). Where it really comes into its own is with older DOS games on old PCs. This video was just a bit of fun tbh.

      Indeed all MIDI synths can be used with a modern pc if you use a standard MIDI to USB interface. The difference here is that the MIDI interface of the ST was built-in and went straight into the motherboard. That's why the ST still has rock-steady MIDI timing, which puts any modern pc or mac DAW setup to shame. Even Fatboy Slim still swears by his Atari ST for sequencing.

    Hi. Does these have harddrives? How do you record sounds?
    Cheers

    • @ctrlaltrees
      @ctrlaltrees  3 года назад

      This one doesn't have a hard drive. It's all MIDI - the sounds are built in to the Roland SoundCanvas (it's a general MIDI device). If you wanted to record sounds you'd need a sampler as well. 🙂
