Because I’m an avid fisherman, I have several fillet knives. They are worth saving. I use them to clean fish and just about everything else in the kitchen. Good job!

I have several of my great-grandfather's kitchen knives which have been sharpened to almost nonexistence like this one.
They were made of good hicarbon steel back then!

It was worth saving. High carbon steel fillet knives are hard to find, most are cheap 420 stainless made in China. This old one is now better than 99% of what’s available on the market. Nice job.

Nice work on restoring the handle, and the Purple Heart looks great. I could see that wood being used for an SG Guitar body. It wouldn’t need any lacquer just buffing up. Looking forward to seeing your next video.

Got an ancient carbon steel butcher's knife. It was my grandparents, then my parents and now it's mine.
It's probably over 80 years old an it's the best cutting knife I own.
The rest of my kitchen knives are modern Sabatiers, but none of them beat the old-timer.

Beautiful. Hope it comes with a mandatory guide on care of carbon steel blades. Had to do that with grandkids, as they thought they were the same as stainless and wouldn’t dry or oil the things.

Impressive restoration. The reason that the old scales were cracked is because they were old wood and were not ''oiled'' to keep from shrinking. All knives and other kitchen tools with wooden handles need to be treated with ''block oil'', like you did. And never, ever put them in the dishwasher!!! Wash and hand dry then re-oil every week or so. Retired chef with very expensive cutlery. Always treated with care. Still looking great after thirty years...

I like how this came out,,, Only thing I would have liked to seen was a bump on the handle to keep your fingers from slipping onto the blade, Not sure that is the right term for what I am trying to say,, but think you might be able to figure it out. Thank for the video

The knife turned out beautiful. You did a wonderful job of bringing it back to a useful tool again. I don’t quite understand your early comment that your friend owned this knife and loved to use it, but wanted you to restore it. That knife looked like it hadn’t been used for a long, long, long time.
With that much rust on the blade and inside the handle area, I would have NEVER used that knife around any food. Why is it then that this is her favorite knife to use?Just wondering.
Thank you! It was her favorite knife , given to her by her grandmother - her husband put it in the dishwasher which ruined the handle then she didn't use it for several years which is why it corroded

Purple heart darkens to a brown with age, UV will only slow the color change.

It may be a fillet knife now, but if it is old, it might have started as a butcher knife, but the owners sharpened it so many times, it wore down to a fillet knife.

Funny I’m seeing comments basically saying “where is the rest of that knife?” Anyone that fishes knows that the fillet knife usually ends up smaller than your pinky after years of use and it’s best used that way for filleting. Annnnnnnnd speaking of which, where’s the fish you should be filleting with it hmmmm? Nah, I’m just pulling your pollock because regardless that’s a beautiful job! I’ve had the same filet knife on my salt water gear belt since I was a young lad at six. My Dad gave me it on my first deep sea trip and it’s only taken a lil love to keep it kept clean n razor sharp for 51 years now. Sure it’s shrunk a wee bit but there’s nothing like using the same knife for decades, especially when I go out deep-sea fishing on a party boat in Gloucester Massachusetts and see the same people year after year and they say “you still got that thing”. They don’t remember me but they remember that knife LOL! Hell yeah, and I’m not about to give it up yet either, the mates want a dollar a fish to clean them for you PLUS a tip! I think damn near a hundred for the trip is quite enough thank you anyway. I go out twice a year and stock my freezer with cod, haddock, pollock, redfish and the occasional halibut, ALL filleted with this knife😉

The fillet knife is fine, you did an honest good job. As for the welding, I don't think it was all that necessary, the 2 part epoxy resin, hard wood scales and pins would more than compensate for handle strength especially for light duty knife.
As for welding, in the future, stick the knife blade all the way through an apple or a potato right up to the area being welded, this will stop any heat from transferring to the blade that will affect its hardness and it will also protect from weld splatter.
One more piece of advice,
I would close up the gaps in your work bench, not good for doing restorations on with small intricate parts that are hard to get or irreplaceable especially working on a gas carburetor . It would also be a lot easier to keep clean and it would stop rust and dirt from falling between the boards below.

That was purpleheart? It seemed to cut too easily, ive worked with it, it's heavy & dense & needs carbide tipped blades to cut it
Footage was sped up I think 350% , it was cut on a metal cutting portaband 😉

You have the ability to weld up rust holes under a handle, why would you ask if it is worth restoring? Funny thing with people restoring knives, and hatchets, and things with a handle they never seem to use a lot of rust prevention teqnichues under the handle, they just epoxy a handle on and call it good.
If rust is there, it will keep rusting which is why I always treat it

worth saving? well... that's often a conundrum. Frankly, for a favorite knife she sure didn't take care of it worth a damn. Looks to me like it was a much wider blade originally, and she let somebody grind it down on a bench grinder "sharpening" it I presume is what they thought they were doing. It was kinda worth saving just to watch you work though. Welding it up is about all you could have done. I'm pickier though I would have welded up every tiny thing until the handle was whole again, but I'd probably have to re heat treat it as well.

@@FixitRestoreit I have an old 22 I’m looking to get refurbished and I wanted to be able to shoot you would have to put a sleeve in the barrel to tighten it up and make it back into a 22 size because it does what it’s called keyhole it doesn’t shoot right it straight it shoots wobbly let me know if you’re interested
