Quick question…my daily player is a Blues Junior IV. It does not have an effects loop, so would this attenuator work if I simply place it between my pedal board output and amp input?
I apologise for that, the guitar was in tune but I was pressing too hard on the strings as it was one of my first videos and nerves were kicking in :) I have since improved as a guitar player, cheers Man!
Hello Paul, useful review , I would like to buy a Marshall DSL20HR, for the construction type of the amplifier the JHS could be used or not? Would an attenuator be better? I'd like to use the head at a bedroom level because I live in a small condo, the Marshall has a shunt to switch from 20 to 10 watt but still loud Thank you
Thanks Antonio, the JHS would work with that amp as it has an effects loop, however if your budget allows then an attenuator would be better as it will give you the full power of the amp whereas the JHS will bypass the power tubes, it depends on whether it matters to you enough, cheers
Just found this! I have 2 pedals in the fx loop and 2 pedals going to the front of the amp! Would this still work? And where in the fx loop would you put it? Start or end of the chain? Many thx in advance
Hi, thanks for the review! great job! just a question in my dsl20 H in the send return i have the ambient pedals this JHS will be at the end of the chain? Tks
Thanks for the review. So with this I can get pre-amp tube distortion, as it simply reduce the volume. I guess I still can't get the power amp tube distortion since there is not enough signal to overdrive the powertubes right?
Thts a good idea iv been doin tht for several years . Always thot it sounded extra good . I'm using a reg volume pedal , I thk it's basically the same thing . Have a good day .

I have a Marshall. I don't know what "preamp in" and "preamp out" are because my amp doesn't have that. Is that just an FX loop? I have an FX IN and FX OUT on my amp. Same thing? Will it make my Marshall less screechy?
Hi! I've got the Orange Crush 35 RT which is a solid state combo with a fx loop. I know it has no tubes in it but I still feel like it sounds better the louder I play. Will the JHS Little Black Amp have any impact on my amp?
It should allow you to play it really loud but tame the volume (I don’t know about the orange crush 35 RT, does it have a master volume?) if not then this will be great, cheers
Hi Derek. I have a BlackStar HT-5R combo amp. But I only identify a Send/Return in the back of the amp. Is it possible to use JHS in this case? How can I do it? Thank you
Gonzalo Sanchez hi, thanks for the comment, they are 6” pig hog flat patch cables I think they were around $12 online but I think GLS do a similar cable for $9 on amazon, cheers.
Honestly, I had a ‘68 deluxe reverb RI and the thing breaks up way too early. I picked up a used HRD for $300, swap out the V1 AX7 with and AT7 and swamp the speak for an alnico cream and boom....I have a way more versatile amp. Clean headroom when I need it and then the JHS attenuator box if I wanna push it
I also have the Marshall DSL40C and I don't have a problem cranking it at low volumes because I can have the gain cranked and the volume low. Does this change the tone a bit and allow you to have both both volume & gain cranked?
Thanks for this. Probably a silly question, but I'm still learning. 😃 If you use this in the effects loop, does that mean you cannot use the effects loops for effects?
How is this different from an attenuator? Still learning here. Was about to buy a tube amp; and now thinking Tone Master so I can play at bedroom levels.
This just drives the preamp harder to keep it simple whereas an attenuator allows you to use the full power of the amp (preamp and power amp) and lower the volume to bedroom levels, tone master is a great amp
hi, i have a hot rod too. With attenuator set -20 db I still cannot push to its break up area because it is too loud. Can I use this little black box after the attenuator as a volume control then to the speaker? I really need your comment sir.
Hi, yes it should work (I haven’t tried it) but no reason it shouldn’t, I use the captor x at -38db with the volume on the amp at 5-6 and it breaks up at bedroom volumes, you would put the black box in the effects loop, cheers
@@DerekPaulGuitar Hi, I cannot put the blackbox in send/return after I used attenuator because it sound so bad to use this way. My attenuator max only -20db that why the breakup point I want is still far too loud. So I am looking for solution how to keep this tone and lower its volume. I cannot lower the guitar signal neither.
First off i dont want to sound hateful in any way but i think it sounds better with it in than without 😅 and about that intonation, if u know how to make a nut then just extend the nut towards the bridge, cut the slots 98.5%, grab any string first fret with usual pressure and see what the polytune says. It'll be flat so grind .1 of a mm back and recheck untill its exact. Then wrap up that 1.5%. Youll like it if u havent done it already
I got one of these for my Blackstar Combo - works great as you said for amps like mine where most of the breakup/distortion comes from the pre-amp section and the power amp remains mostly clean. I don't see any downside in this case. It may not work as well in an amp where the cranked up power section provides a significant amount of tonal character that the player wishes to retain - those type amps would require an attenuator between amp and speaker in order to reduce overall volume without losing the tonal quality provided by the power amp section at higher volumes.
In my opinion it's amazing for what it does and i used it like that for years until i could afford an attenuator, but i'd go back to it if need be, great thing! cheers
Derek Paul, thank you for this review! I want to order this pedal :) but could you help me to understand, will it work if there are other pedals in the FX loop, such as delay?
Hi Derek Well in the end i went for the vox ac15c1 and i absolutely love it. Have it set so its slighty broken up with my guitar volume on 8 and when i roll to 10 OMG does it take off!
Been meaning to get an attenuator for a while, and then I stumbled upon the different route this pedal provides. From what I understand though, it basically does the same as any other volume pedal, correct? I’m not really a pedal expert, but there are a few overdrive pedals I have laying around that I never use. Theoretically, could I just stick one in my FX loop and only use its volume knob? Or would that not do the same thing as the JHS pedal? Just trying to save the most money here lol. Thanks.
Josh Falejczyk hi Josh you are correct it’s just a volume control and any of your pedals you have should do the same job if you put it in the effects loop :))
Hi, i plan to buy a a tube combo but the amp has no effect loop... So is it possible tu use that pedal anyway through the input orwill it damage the amp? Thanks
Hi Nico, it will only have an effect on amps that have an effects loops, it won’t damage the amp as it’s just a volume control but it won’t have the desired effect of pushing the preamp tubes, hope that helps, cheers
I don't get how this works. If you put it in the loop of a master volume amp you're still not cooking the power tubes. So it's only useful for a non-master volume amp, right?
Isn't this just a potentiometer in a box? Does it have a buffer or something? Just wondering, because you don't need this pedal in particular to do it. You can make the same thing for about 5 bucks. Or buy one from ETSY that actually look really great on this amp because it's got the same style of knob as the rest of the amp and doesn't need cables. Looks really sleek actually. But just wondering if the JHS box has something else to it that I don't know about.
Hi Felix, that’s pretty much what it is, you can definitely make one yourself or buy a cheaper one, or indeed just use an EQ pedal set flat and use the volume on that, I just went for the jhs one as I got a good price on it, cheers
@@DerekPaulGuitar Yes, they sound worse if the delay and reverb are before the LBAB, but even if I put the LBAB before them, at the beginning of the signal chain in the FX loop, it makes the sound just awful, give it try :(
Maybe it's noob question. Is it safe or "acceptable" putting an amp on maximum volume even with this box??? Im asking cause I'm considering buying the JHS
Not a noob question at all :) it’s perfectly safe although of course it will probably lessen the life of the tubes, by how much I don’t know, probably not much, but yes perfectly safe :) cheers
Well spotted! From time to time I’ll play something that sounds similar to something else but not exactly or the channel may get a copyright notice :) thanks Greg

Greg Isaacs nice! I hope it helps you out! I’ve had mine on the amp for over year and use it all the time, I’ll have to check that Tokyo concert out! Thanks Greg, appreciate that, cheers
Hi Louise, I’m not entirely sure, I guess it depends on whether the synth is at full volume and you can’t turn it down?, you could then put this after the synths output before it goes into a pa/desk/interface etc
@@DerekPaulGuitar thank you sir. If you don't mind, I have another question. On an amp without a loop, like a princeton or deluxe reverb, can the black box be used on a pedal board going into the front input? Appreciate the quick response.

Thanks man! i appreciate that, i thought the batman thing would be funny lol, i was looking at the Bugera too but in all honesty i don't think i need it, this gives me exactly what i need and it's tiny, thanks and stay well!
Derek Paul Guitar - totally get it, and I think I’ll grab one of these. Seriously, run with the Batman theme, graphics, villains, everything man. It could be your schtick!! :)
Let me see if I understand... This little guy brings the preamp breakup to bedroom levels, which is why it’s plugged into the FX loop. An attenuator does the same thing, except it brings both (preamp and power amp breakup) down to bedroom levels, which is why it’s connected after your actual amp but before your speaker cab? Right? Wrong?
@@kangaroofoot - I’d say you nailed it. I find attenuators a bit more ‘true to tone’ than this volume pedal, but for the ease of use and price it’s pretty darn good.
I've got a similar amp and hoping to make use of this JHS pedal. Would you expect that while using it with a HRD IV it adds any noise? I had a unit I ended up returning because no matter what even at 0 the pedal added a good hum, particularly noticeable when you aren't playing.
Hi, I didn’t experience any noise at all so I wouldn’t expect any, only of course if you use the high gain setting on the amp and max the volume, but that’s to be expected, cheers
I guess I'm just now figuring out that I don't understand how an FX loop works, I have a Supersonic 22, I can switch the FX LOOP 'on' and 'off' with the Fender footswitch. Would the JHS Little Black Amp Box be 'engaged' if I have the FX loop set to 'off'?
Hi Evan, I’m not familiar with that amp but I would say that if the little amp box was in the effects loop and you switched the effects loops off the little black amp box would be disengaged, that sounds right to me but maybe worth checking with the manufacturer.
@@DerekPaulGuitar Yeah, I was thinking perhaps the send signal was always active but the return is what is getting switched on or off, I bought one anyways just to hear my amp on something more than 1.8 out of curiosity. I never expected a fender to be wall melting at 4.
This is what I need for my Landau. That should stop my band mates moaning like mad!!!! My drummer said that he felt like my amp Was throwing hammers at him 😄
Hi and thanks for the comment, I don’t think the Princeton reverb has an effects loop unfortunately, might be worth looking at an attenuator though if you can unplug the speaker?
I hope that you bought a better amp. The difference between a Hotrod and a Princeton is huge. But the Tone King Gremlin would be better if you want it for home. 😁👍
I still have the hot rod, I use a tech 21 q-strip parametric eq and a NUX compressor in front of it and it sounds amazing, the amps you mentioned are out of my price range.
@@DerekPaulGuitar Hi Derek. I understand. I think the approach you’ve taken is clever. When I used a Blues Jnr, I used the Tech 21 Blonde and a compressor to improve the sound. Changing the speaker is the best way to improve them as Fender uses dreadful speakers. I used a Cannabis Rex, which is great, but the Eminence Legend or Legacy (it’s name is one of those) gives a truer Fender sound. I recently bought a used Cali76 compressor and it is amazing. At first it sounded no different, but after a few days I realised that it’s effect was transparent, but it made my TC Hypergravity, and other compressors, sound awful. For about £140 it transformed my tone. I’m a Brit living in Australia. I only recently learned how expensive music gear is in the UK. It’s very expensive here, but it’s worse in the UK. But I highly recommend getting a better speaker and an Origin Effects Compressor. Fender puts crappy speakers in all of its amps, except for the handwired models. I’ve been watching the Origin Effects Compressors for 10 years and the used prices have finally started coming down. Thanks mate. Max 😁👍
Too much emphasis is made on cranking power tubes for 'that' sound. Sometimes it just sounds flubby, ratty and a bit broken. However.... crank the volume on silver face 70s twin, turn down the master and bass, crank up the treble and mids and.. instant never mind the bollocks! Wow, thank you for the video my good man. Never thought of the pedal to be this useful. All this while I thought we all need to get a pricey attenuator or cab sim like the Two Notes.
Thanks for the comment! Glad you found it useful
I came to the very same solution for my Blues Deluxe 40W - works great!
Cheers Scott, yeah it’s a great low budget solution, works perfectly
I’ve one of these amps & yep it’s in my spare room! Great amp, my fault for buying but I love the clean tones. I’m going to buy this & see what happens. Great idea & video. Thanks 🙏
Thanks Simeon, it works great to get preamp saturation, I’m the same though, just love the clean tones of this amp 👍 thanks for the comment
Derek Paul Guitar I’ve also looked at a similar product, the Bugera ps1 power soak. Do you have experience of this product? Cheers Sim.
Simeon Crowther I haven’t Simeon, but I saw a video that Phil McKnight did on them and another video on them and they look really good, I was thinking about getting one myself eventually, it’s a Behringer product unless I’m mistaken so should be a quality unit
Derek Paul I’m not sure whether to buy the JHS or spend a little bit more. Hmmmmm. Will do a bit more research. Thanks 👍
Hmmmm I wouldn’t know either, research is good 👍
Thank you, I’ve been needing something like this!
Thanks for the comment and glad it helped!
Quick question…my daily player is a Blues Junior IV. It does not have an effects loop, so would this attenuator work if I simply place it between my pedal board output and amp input?
Thanks for the comment, I’m not sure it will work, an effects loop is where it lives, cheers!
Does it bother anyone else that the guitar is badly out of tune?
I apologise for that, the guitar was in tune but I was pressing too hard on the strings as it was one of my first videos and nerves were kicking in :) I have since improved as a guitar player, cheers Man!
It is the sound and tone that I am interested in. The guitar being slightly out of tune doesn’t matter. Good video and thanks.

Hello Paul, useful review , I would like to buy a Marshall DSL20HR, for the construction type of the amplifier the JHS could be used or not? Would an attenuator be better?
I'd like to use the head at a bedroom level because I live in a small condo, the Marshall has a shunt to switch from 20 to 10 watt but still loud
Thank you
Thanks Antonio, the JHS would work with that amp as it has an effects loop, however if your budget allows then an attenuator would be better as it will give you the full power of the amp whereas the JHS will bypass the power tubes, it depends on whether it matters to you enough, cheers

You certainly can :) nice amp choice too 👍 cheers!
Thanks for the review. So with this I can get pre-amp tube distortion, as it simply reduce the volume. I guess I still can't get the power amp tube distortion since there is not enough signal to overdrive the powertubes right?
Correct, you can get preamp but not power amp distortion :) thanks for the comment
yes the front end fluff compressed distortion comes from preamp tubes but proper mans distortion comes from de big tubes ! ...totally different
Thts a good idea iv been doin tht for several years . Always thot it sounded extra good . I'm using a reg volume pedal , I thk it's basically the same thing . Have a good day .
Derek, I need to quiet a Flamma FS21 Looper/Drum that I bought off of your recommendation. I love it but the drums are too loud. Can I put this in line to reduce the drum machine volume? Thanks for your reviews! I love them.
Hi, unfortunately it won’t work like this, you can adjust the level of the drums though (Rhythm volume) don’t know if you have this but there’s a manual for it :) flammainnovation.com/file/pdf?url=group1/M00/00/02/wKgA0GE6q96ASATHABePJDv_Wvc855.pdf&fileName=FS21_Manual_EN_V01_2020.11.05-G.pdf cheers!
could we get the same resutlts using a volume pedal like a dunlop one?
Absolutely!
I have a Marshall. I don't know what "preamp in" and "preamp out" are because my amp doesn't have that. Is that just an FX loop? I have an FX IN and FX OUT on my amp. Same thing? Will it make my Marshall less screechy?
It is an effects loop yes and that should work! I’m not sure about less screechy but you’ll be able to turn it up without it being too loud!

Hi Victor, the send return on your amp is the effects loop, so you can use the JHS by plugging it into there, just follow my video :) you’ll be fine
what are those patch cables? I havent seen those before and would be perfect for my board. Thanks!
Gonzalo Sanchez hi, thanks for the comment, they are 6” pig hog flat patch cables I think they were around $12 online but I think GLS do a similar cable for $9 on amazon, cheers.
I made my own a bout 20 years ago for it, I plug it into the fx loop the same too.
HI Derek. This pedal has the same function that JHS Little amp?
Hi, this is just basically a potentiometer in box not an amp as such

I picked up a used HRD for $300, swap out the V1 AX7 with and AT7 and swamp the speak for an alnico cream and boom....I have a way more versatile amp. Clean headroom when I need it and then the JHS attenuator box if I wanna push it

I just got this and it is well worth it. My Marshall dsl40c sounds like it should finally without pissing off my wife and neighbors lol.
I hear ya! My neighbours are happy also! Lol
@Hectic Von kaos Yes it still works with the pedals in the front of the amp, cheers
I also have the Marshall DSL40C and I don't have a problem cranking it at low volumes because I can have the gain cranked and the volume low. Does this change the tone a bit and allow you to have both both volume & gain cranked?
Think I need one of these for my dsl40c
@@andycpd6669 it works really well. Way cheaper than a load box.

Cool little thing. Is this an attenuator? If not, how is it different?
Cheers! Not an attenuator just sits in the effects loop so controls the volume of the pre amp circuit before the power amp :)
@@DerekPaulGuitar Ah, so it's more of a volume pedal for the preamp breakup. Thank you.
@@kangaroofoot yes, you summarised it perfectly :)
hi, i have a hot rod too. With attenuator set -20
db I still cannot push to its break up area because it is too loud.
@@metallui the only other thing I can suggest is an attenuator that’s will go lower, go to have that tone! I hear you
First off i dont want to sound hateful in any way but i think it sounds better with it in than without 😅 and about that intonation, if u know how to make a nut then just extend the nut towards the bridge, cut the slots 98.5%, grab any string first fret with usual pressure and see what the polytune says. It'll be flat so grind .1 of a mm back and recheck untill its exact. Then wrap up that 1.5%. Youll like it if u havent done it already
Is this just like a master volume? Why not put a volume pedal in the fx loop?
You could do exactly that! Cheers
In my opinion it's amazing for what it does and i used it like that for years until i could afford an attenuator, but i'd go back to it if need be, great thing! cheers
Hi! Nice video. Works on a transistorized amp?

Hi Derek
Well in the end i went for the vox ac15c1 and i absolutely love it.
Derek Paul Thanks Derek, really appreciate the fast reply. I dig your video style too, so I’ve subscribed to stick around for more. Have a great day.
Josh Falejczyk thank you Josh I really appreciate that and am always happy to talk guitar :) cheers
Can i use a compressor pedal in the loop to control the master volume instead? Thanks

Use any pedal that has a volume control on it to do the same thing, cheers
Hi, i plan to buy a a tube combo but the amp has no effect loop... So is it possible tu use that pedal anyway through the input orwill it damage the amp?
Thanks
Hi Nico, it will only have an effect on amps that have an effects loops, it won’t damage the amp as it’s just a volume control but it won’t have the desired effect of pushing the preamp tubes, hope that helps, cheers
@@DerekPaulGuitar ok thanks for your fast response ;)
Nico no problem man :)
I don't get how this works. If you put it in the loop of a master volume amp you're still not cooking the power tubes. So it's only useful for a non-master volume amp, right?
Correct. There’s no point if you already have a master volume amp
I already have it but if I put any effect in the effects loop it stops working properly, so I cant use reverbs, delays etc?
That’s interesting, have you tried the reverbs etc before and after it? Cheers
@@DerekPaulGuitar Yes, they sound worse if the delay and reverb are before the LBAB, but even if I put the LBAB before them, at the beginning of the signal chain in the FX loop, it makes the sound just awful, give it try :(

I don't think you can as it doesn't have an effects loop
Should have used a DB meter. So we knew how loud the amp was before and after The Black Box.
Goff Cool thanks for the comment but loudness isn’t the point of this, just that you can have the amp low but get an overdriven sound from the preamps
So....could you demo a jhs tuner pedal next time maybe. Bwahahahahaha. Just taking a friendly piss.
I reckon i could do at least a 30-40 second demo of that Johnny! 😉
At least HE put in the effort...whats your excuse?
Can you run pedals through it?
Absolutely!
Isn't it the same as you put a volume Pedal in preamp and power?
For me it's only a Potentiometer, isnt it?
Yes it is basically just a potentiometer in a box, a volume pedal will do the same thing

This little guy brings the preamp breakup to bedroom levels, which is why it’s plugged into the FX loop. An attenuator does the same thing, except it brings both (preamp and power amp breakup) down to bedroom levels, which is why it’s connected after your actual amp but before your speaker cab?
Right? Wrong?

Why just not buy a Bugera Power Soak? It’s cheaper and sounds just as good as this gizmo.
Is the Bugera power soak the same price? Also I’ve not heard good things about it
I don't know. I think the box does its job and makes things quieter, but it also seems to make the guitar sound out of tune
I returned for that reason, it’s a weird thing!
"HE HAS THE BOX!"
