My question trying to figure out is what if you have pedals or in my case an effects processor in the loop will affect the line signal of said device, well more like if it can be used with the device because it will drop the signal going through the loop.
So I ran my pedal board in the loop with the JHS little black amp box pedal, (wish I would have done it in the video), It sounded really good. I put the JHS at the end of the pedal chain, turned up the amp then dialed the volume for my pedals from the JHS from there. @@RichBischoff I have a little different set up lol, imagine this if want. My guitar into a Zakk Wylde wah pedal into a Ibanez Nu-tube screamer, into a Zakk Wylde overdrive to a mxr stereo chorus to a Radial ab/y switcher box. Now one line goes to the Marshall jcm800 and the other line goes to the Carvin X50B. In the Carvin has the ART sge effects processor. So it's a little bit of a complicated setup to run. The guy at the store said I could run it in the front of the amp so I thought I could line level the whole set up. It was till I got it home and read the instructions. So I can only use it I'm sure with the Carvin. However I would love to try how you mentioned.
Man, I really need one of those attenuators, but since you said you plugged it into loop effect, damn it. I currently plugging all my mod pedals into loop effects. Damn it.
My main amp is a Super Sonic 22, and I use effects in the loop Boss Dimension C chorus and JHS Milkman (delay and boost). Where should the Little Black Amp Box be placed.
Take note, peeps. This requires a 'series' effects loop. Apparently it is not meant for a parallel effects loop. And using it with other pedals in the loop will change the sound of the other pedals, so don't.
It's like having a Volume Pedal hooked up to your effects loop. Did this with Mesa Boogies and when giggging. Had more control of the over all volume without any change to the tone!
if you put in FX loop, does it interfere w/ other FX. I run my time/modulation FX in loop. Sorry if someone covered. (JHS site down for revamp, so couldn't look at all the info) But this could be my dream come true, especially for money. Most power soak devices are really expensive. I run only a 20 watt combo, but it can still get really loud when cranked.
I put it at the end of my pedal board, it only effects for volume of the pedals going into the loop, that said when you turn the amp volume up, and the JHS down, it will effect the tone of your pedals, because you are now driving the tubes, so the sound of anything into the loop will be effected.
@@RichBischoff To be clear, turning the amp up will be driving the pre-amp tubes, not the power amp tubes. You'd need a power soak to really drive the power amp tubes.
same thing for a Marshall DSL20 with the power switch set to 10 watts. can only turn it to 1&1/2 before the yelling starts. all amp should come with Master Volumes. But this JHS Little Black Amp Box add one to any amp for $45.
Hi Rich! New here... That Strat is friggin sweet! Lol Love the amp box but had trouble listening for looking at the axe.LOL!Josh is a bloody genius. cheers Brother, love your channel. I like the demo...and a talented picker, too.
@@RichBischoff cool.. I'm ordering one. I tried changing the tube in stage one to s AT7 vs the stock AX7. Many have done that to tame the volume. However for me I lost major tone.. and also I started getting a electrical popping sound when I would turn off the amp it would do it in standby mode as well. I changed the tube back and all is good, but I've got that problem still with the volume as we all know. 😁 also I bought an OCD pedal to go with the amp, but I couldn't use it because the OCD at the lowest volume made the amp too loud.
Bit of a daft question, but does using the BB in the effects loop stop you from using an effects board in the loop. Or can the pedal be placed on your board then into the loop? Thanks for the review!!!!
@@RichBischoff Interesting...in my effects loop it grossly changes the signal from my delay and chorus pedals. As if they are not only changed tone wise but also in that at acceptable volume level the delay is all but gone unless the LBAB is turned up to 50% or more, then the actually delay on my pedal is heard vs sounding like a signal with no delay. I've tried them pre and post pedal in the effects loop to no avail. What ends up happening is if I run anything but the LBAB in the Effects Loop I still have to turn Pre-Amp and Master volumes way down. Sounds great when it's the only thing in my effects loop however, I'd say it sounds better to my ears at a reasonable volume than keeping pre-amp levels normal and attempting to control speaker volume with the master only. Mesa Nomad 45 2x12. Thanks for the vids.
@@RichBischoff Rich, do you feel it's maintaining most of the tube amp tone or are we to expect losing some as a trade off for being able to play loud tube amps at home? I'm trying to choose one but it's confusing because there are 50 different attenuators out there, most of them more expensive and with more controls or options? I just want volume control without changing my sound from a cranked tube amp ( 20 watt amp) so I can play at home.
Running it at the end of the loop with all other mods, delays and reverb work out ok? I rely on mainly amp for crunch but love my modulation pedals. Anyone?
I've read that putting this last on the chain of the fx loop works, but I can't find a video that confirms it, all demos are with it alone on the loop (JHS also recommends to use it alone). I saw in a video that a expression or EQ pedal with a volume knob can be used exactly the same way as this, after all, it is just acting as a master volume on amps that don't have it. Lastly, I also read that a BB preamp (that this guy uses in front of the amp) can be used like that aswell at the end of the loop chain, which would give the possibility to add drive beyond only adjusting the volume. Will try that last trick asap with my MA50C and BB, if it goes well I can stop looking for a new amp...
Just bought one, waiting for it to arrive ($45? Try $65). I bought it to get control over my 5150 iii at home, but it occurs to me this little bad boy can be used for soloing. My Mesa TC50 has a built-in solo boost, but like every other boost I've tried, I found that using it causes a loss of tube crunch, almost to the point of cleaning up the signal. Since this box goes in the effects loop, I'm thinking that if I set the amp to solo volume, then cut it back with this box in the loop, I can leave the loop on while playing rhythm and then turn it off for an instant solo boost without losing that crunch.
An EQ does the same thing, but when you bring the sliders all the way down, the volume doesn't get low enough I think. I have a Hot Rod Deville, and have been using a Boss GE7, and have had issues with small stages, and bringing the volume down enough to be able to have front of house put my amp in the main speakers. They have to pull my amp to where they barely hear it, or all the way out, and that defeats the purpose of micing the amp. It's nice to be able to EQ my amp as well, but Volume is an issue with Hot Rod amps.
I would like to use this on my Marshall jcm 2000 TSL 100-amp. It already has a VPR button it knocks it from 100w to 25. So I want to knock it down even further question is I have a multi-effects unit which I use the back of the return of the amp. So I would put this thing after my multi-effects unit which I have a line 6 Helix floor unit going into the return of the amp? I'm not using the four cable method. Do I need it to put in an effects Loop or can I do it from head of cab out then put it on and go into a 4x12 speaker cabinet?
Hi Rich..do you recommend using my compressor/ phaser in the loop with my little black amp box? Or is it better to put those in between my Strat and the jack? Thanks!
Oh and. .I'm using a loop station RC -1 as well. Currently I'm using the little black box in the Hot Rod s effects loop and the loop station in between my Strat and amp h Jack. So it could maybe go there, with the Box, or combine everything in effects loop with Box. Thank you!
Hello and thanks, I have a question , what if I’m sending the modulation pedals thru send /return of my amp , how will this fit in ? The way I use is NS2 from boss , to clean gain pedals and use the x connection , with send return of the pedal itself NS2, then continue to imput of the amp , then the modulation , I use 3 jhs on modulation, I send them thru that send /return of the Amp .
I still don't know what this is. Is this an attenuator? I watched the whole video but I'm really confused. Does it let me crank my Marshall but then attenuate the volume?
I like JHS but it's a bit over priced for a volume pot and two jack's. I opted instead for a Dr Watson for half the price. It's a matching chicken head/pot with the jack inserts attached. It fits perfectly into the loop and just looks like another knob on the panel. Definitely a must for any Deville/Deluxe owner
no a lot of amps do not give you the full tone unless you turn the volume up especially tube amps. So this gives the full signal of the preamp but gives a reduced signal to the poweramp giving you full volume tone and a lower volume.
@@mikew3665 It most certainly is like a master volume lol! because a master volume, just like this box, also allows you to get the full signal from the preamp, but sends a reduced signal to the poweramp. To get the "full tone" of a cranked amp, you would need to crank the power tubes as well. That's what a real power soaking attenuator is for. It reduces the signal from your poweramp to the speaker.
@@joywolfe. why would I not be pleased, just pointing out the obvious. I like talking about gear, disagreement is supposed to happen that's how you learn.
Yes it is the same as master volume. Volume n master volume is not the same. Master is at the end of the pre amp effect loop n volume is before the pre amp loop.
Could you achieve a similar result using a volume pedal in the effects Loop? That way your hands would be free while adjusting the volume with your foot..
Thanks for the review. Do you think it would be good for recording a tube amp in an apartment. Do I still good a nice full tube tone when I record the lower volume the JHS puts out?
@@RichBischoff thanks man, I'm gonna order one and try it out. Still torn between using this and my amp or direct into my interface using Amplitube 5 and the IR loader.
Hi, fantastic demo! I have a question, will the LBAB work with a solid state amplifier like a Fender Champion 100? It has a LOOP fx but it is a transistor amplifier
Hello Rich, useful review , I would like to buy a Marshall DSL20HR, for the construction type of the amplifier the JHS could be used or not? Would an attenuator be better? I'd like to use the head at a bedroom level because I live in a small condo, the Marshall has a shunt to switch from 20 to 10 watt but still loud, maybe Peavey 6505MH Will Be Better? Thank you
So currently on my JCM 900 I use a Holy Grail Reverb pedal on the effects loop (my only effect, I like simple). Can I use this pedal on that same loop, and do I put it before or after the reverb? Should I put the reverb on the main input?
The main reason of this “master volume pedal” is to bring down the overall volume without affecting the tone/the sound. So you always want this master volume pedal at the end of every effects pedal.
Instead of buying this little box, couldn’t you just buy a volume pedal and use it in the effects loop along with all your other stomp box effects likes delays etc? Then the volume is controllable from your foot like the rest of the effects and you don’t have to have an extra box and cables on top of your amp of have to reach over to the amp to make adjustments If possible, the Only downside is you may accidentally step on the volume pedal and get a loud blast of volume unexpectedly
Please forgive my ignorance here, .... Is the goal here to be able to turn up the master and turn up the channel volume to where the amp is breathing and producing a sweet sound but using the JHS as THE volume to tame it to a reasonable level?
@@CedricSatterfield yes, I have a loop on both my heads, a randall thrasher and marshall sv20h. I'm mainly interested in using it on the marshall though since my randall has a master volume. They both connect to a randall 4x12 loaded with the g12k100 celestion (400w) and the marshall sv20h is too loud for my apartment from the first instant that the volume pot begins making sound. I'm trying to just let the marshall get to 3 or 4 on the volume level and then use the JHS to keep the volume at apartment level.
Loudness is a relative term, what one person considers loud might be not loud enough for the next person. I wish that when someone does a demo or review of a product like this they would use a dB Meter instead of saying you can hear the difference, personally when I watch YT videos 95% of the time it's on my tablet without headphones and it ALL sounds the same. By using a dB Meter you'll know exactly how loud and how much of a difference along with the range this attenuator makes.
It isnt "attenuating" the volume it is essentially just a master volume pot in an fx loop. Its very different from an attenuator. But to answer your question, yes. Your boosts and drives will still increase the overall volume while using the little black box in the fx loop. Its a great pedal for the money and helps for playing at home through a loud amp.
This or a Bugera PS1 Passive 100-watt Power Attenuator? The Bugera is about $100. So with this your sort of attenuating the pre amp tubes. With the Bugera your including the power tubes also.
@@IceGuitarist23 I think as long as you have an effects loop, it should work the same way as it does on the Fender. Don't quote me on that though... :)
@@RichBischoff okay! In regards to the pedals, did you leave them on the same settings or did you find that after you'd attenuated the volume the pedals needed complete re-dialing in?
It only works with a loop. DO NOT TRY AND USE IT AS AN ATTENUATOR BETWEEN AMP AND SPEAKER. You'll blow up something, probably the tubes and god knows what else.
Hi. in case you already got a pedal board into the FX loop of the amp, does the JHS should be insert at beginning or in the end of the pedal board? and also, how does it affects the sound of your pedals? thanks.
I got one of these to try with my Origin 20, cuz even the 1/2 Watt setting is very loud when fully cranked (and I live in an apartment) now the issue I have is that it totally killed the breakup, even with the boost engaged, tho cranking the amp did fatten the tone a lot. So, yes, I'm getting that fat tone at low volume but not the breakup, so a little disappointed, I mean I got pedals etc I can shove in front but that's kinda not the point. Maybe I'm doing something wrong?

Now one line goes to the Marshall jcm800 and the other line goes to the Carvin X50B. In the Carvin has the ART sge effects processor. So it's a little bit of a complicated setup to run. The guy at the store said I could run it in the front of the amp so I thought I could line level the whole set up. It was till I got it home and read the instructions. So I can only use it I'm sure with the Carvin. However I would love to try how you mentioned.
Man, I really need one of those attenuators, but since you said you plugged it into loop effect, damn it. I currently plugging all my mod pedals into loop effects. Damn it.
I think you can put it on the chain with your mod pedals.
@@RichBischoff OMG! I'll definitely give it a try.. Thanks man.
My main amp is a Super Sonic 22, and I use effects in the loop Boss Dimension C chorus and JHS Milkman (delay and boost). Where should the Little Black Amp Box be placed.
After your effects.
@@RichBischoff just wondering, wont your effects have level controls. I just ordered the Dr Watson from Great Britain???
Take note, peeps. This requires a 'series' effects loop. Apparently it is not meant for a parallel effects loop. And using it with other pedals in the loop will change the sound of the other pedals, so don't.
It's like having a Volume
Pedal hooked up to your effects loop. Did this with Mesa Boogies and when giggging. Had more control of the over all volume without any change to the tone!
Ugh I wish my EHX MiG 50 had either an fix loop or master volume. I have to use attenuator.
if you put in FX loop, does it interfere w/ other FX.
Fender Frontman 212 is like that, 1 is too low, 2 will blow the window out
Nice! Thank you so much for this review man, I’ve needed one of these for so long without even knowing it lol
Welcome dude!
Should the JHS go before or after the existing effects in your loop?
Hi Rich! New here... That Strat is friggin sweet! Lol Love the amp box but had trouble listening for looking at the axe.LOL!Josh is a bloody genius. cheers Brother, love your channel. I like the demo...and a talented picker, too.
I never use the dirt channel on my Hot Rod blues Deluxe. Can I still get that good clean headroom using this with my amp?
Yes
No you can add the JHS pedal at the end of the chain with all your pedals.
JHS says that only the LBAB should be in the loop. You can put other stuff, but you’ll notice volume changes.
Just saw this on AMS. I think im gonna get one. Looks like a great way to be able to crank my amp but still keep it down. Awesome vid, thanks
Man I only really play Marshall's and soldanos. But that fender sounds really beautiful. Great sounding amp.
Great tone and feel; kinda has a Lynch type of phrasing.
Thanks. he was one of my influences, so that makes sense.
Is it possible to plug this and still have more pedals in the fx loop?
@@gabrielurnau6815 thanks for the info.
I have a synth with no volume control. Could I plug my synths output into this to control its volume?
I don't see why not.
but the DeVille goes to 12 not 11 ("But this one goes to 11. Its one louder ."}not 10,,,,,,,,,,12....so its 2 louder or is it just too loud?
Thank you very much... great review. I am going to get one
Strange shirt. HK logo with revolvers. Killer video.
Awesome stuff.. wont a eq pedal do the same thing.. lvur playing
I laughed so hard at the intro lol
I have a Marshall 100w head with a 4x12 could I crank that with this?
Yes
Dude ,the intro! The best!!!!!
Can you use pedals and the JHS at the same time?
Currently I'm using the little black box in the Hot Rod s effects loop and the loop station in between my Strat and amp h
Jack. So it could maybe go there, with the Box, or combine everything in effects loop with Box. Thank you!
I would only use the little black amp box in the loop. Everthing else into the input jack

I think you can just put them chain with the little black amp box..
great review...so the delux and deville both have master volums? is this better? the jhs....amI missing something
I still don't know what this is. Is this an attenuator? I watched the whole video but I'm really confused. Does it let me crank my Marshall but then attenuate the volume?
Can this also work as some sort of booster? Please help me...
No, it's made for lowering your amps volume.
My coworker heard me talking about getting a amp with lower wattage and he suggested i get JHs Black amp box.
Great video! Would you recommend for gig use to tame volume and jumps in volume?
Yes
Hi! Great video!! Works on transitorized amps with effects loop?
I want to use my effects processor in the effects loop still. is it possible? I can't find the correct way to route the cables when using that box.
I think I'm gonna end up getting this pedal, I just picked up an evh 5150 lbx that had no balance in volume at all.
Good decision. For $45, you cant go wrong!
@@RichBischoff I run my noise gate through the effects, so where would I put this pedal?
Dantrag28 I’d put it after the gate.

Dantrag28 loop send -> noise gate -> LBAB -> loop return.
I like JHS but it's a bit over priced for a volume pot and two jack's. I opted instead for a Dr Watson for half the price. It's a matching chicken head/pot with the jack inserts attached. @@soofitnsexy No I’m afraid not. You’ll need an attenuator between power amp & speaker for those old girls
What is the difference between this and a power attenuator?
This only works with line level signals!! Very important!
isnt it the same like the master volume?
no a lot of amps do not give you the full tone unless you turn the volume up especially tube amps.
@@joywolfe. yes it is but its not exactly the same that was my point. Your response is redundant.
@@joywolfe. why would I not be pleased, just pointing out the obvious.
I like talking about gear, disagreement is supposed to happen that's how you learn.
Yes it is the same as master volume. Volume n master volume is not the same. Master is at the end of the pre amp effect loop n volume is before the pre amp loop.
If you were going to use a noise gate in the loop would the gate go last or would this pedal go last.
This pedal would go last.
@@RichBischoff Thank you that's good to know.

How does it compare to the Mosky VOL attenuator? Which is half the price.

Hey Rich will this help get rid of some of the higher volume hum of the Hot Rod?
Hello Rich, useful review , I would like to buy a Marshall DSL20HR, for the construction type of the amplifier the JHS could be used or not? Would an attenuator be better?
I'd like to use the head at a bedroom level because I live in a small condo, the Marshall has a shunt to switch from 20 to 10 watt but still loud, maybe Peavey 6505MH Will Be Better?
Thank you
I feel like you can turn those DSL amps down to bedroom levels without an attenuator.
Here for the Mountain Dew!
So currently on my JCM 900 I use a Holy Grail Reverb pedal on the effects loop (my only effect, I like simple). Can I use this pedal on that same loop, and do I put it before or after the reverb? Should I put the reverb on the main input?
Put it after the verb.
Then the volume is controllable from your foot like the rest of the effects and you don’t have to have an extra box and cables on top of your amp of have to reach over to the amp to make adjustments
If possible, the Only downside is you may accidentally step on the volume pedal and get a loud blast of volume unexpectedly
@@ourclarioncall should be the same thing, a pot. BUT are they both LOG Pots?

Pretty much.
That’s exactly what you can make yourself for less than $10.
@@rodmiller9798 less than 10 with a black painted metal enclosure and switchcraft jacks? nah. But definitely cheaper than what they charge.
Please forgive my ignorance here, ....
Is the goal here to be able to turn up the master and turn up the channel volume to where the amp is breathing and producing a sweet sound but using the JHS as THE volume to tame it to a reasonable level?
Basically, so long as you have an effect loop. It won't take the place of a speaker load and you can't put it between the speaker and the amp.
You've never played a Deville have you...😂
@@RichBischoff personally NO but I know they are extremely loud.
That intro tho lmao
Hey, does it change the sound of the amp if Jhs pedal is all the way up?
So what if your amp doesn’t have a effect loop
The issue with this is that you can no longer use the effects loop for effects …
You could if you used a splitter basically giving you a pre loop
Wrong. Jhs at the end of the chain
Have to say you are one bad ass player pro level to the max so toneful
do you run this at the beginning or end of the other pedals in your effects loop?
When you attenuate the volume and get it to where you want it, can you hit it with a boost or OD and it increases the volume for solo purposes?
It isnt "attenuating" the volume it is essentially just a master volume pot in an fx loop. Its very different from an attenuator. But to answer your question, yes. Your boosts and drives will still increase the overall volume while using the little black box in the fx loop. Its a great pedal for the money and helps for playing at home through a loud amp.
This or a Bugera PS1 Passive 100-watt Power Attenuator? The Bugera is about $100. So with this your sort of attenuating the pre amp tubes. With the Bugera your including the power tubes also.
I'd like to get the Bugera eventually.
@@RichBischoff would this be the perfect choice for my DV Mark CMT 50 head. It has valve pre amp but solid state power section ????

Liam Cleaves left them the same.
Can anyone recommend basically this for a tube amp with no effects loop?
Also trying to find that out! Haha
NO!
It only works with a loop. DO NOT TRY AND USE IT AS AN ATTENUATOR BETWEEN AMP AND SPEAKER.
You'll blow up something, probably the tubes and god knows what else.
Get a true reactive load box. Torpedo Captor, Bugera PS1, Weber, Suhr...there are options.
Hi. in case you already got a pedal board into the FX loop of the amp, does the JHS should be insert at beginning or in the end of the pedal board? and also, how does it affects the sound of your pedals? thanks.
I have the same question. Did you get an answer from somewhere?
I got one of these to try with my Origin 20, cuz even the 1/2 Watt setting is very loud when fully cranked (and I live in an apartment) now the issue I have is that it totally killed the breakup, even with the boost engaged, tho cranking the amp did fatten the tone a lot. So, yes, I'm getting that fat tone at low volume but not the breakup, so a little disappointed, I mean I got pedals etc I can shove in front but that's kinda not the point. Maybe I'm doing something wrong?
just get an ehx lpb-1 for 30 quid
What if u have your effect going threw the return and send
where’s the master volume set?
