Vauxhall Mokka-e vs Hyundai Kona Electric: Battle of the £30k electric SUVs

  • If you're thinking about buying a £30,000 electric car, the Vauxhall Mokka-e and Hyundai Kona Electric are both likely to be on your shortlist. But which is the better car?
    In this CarGurus UK review, Vicky Parrott compares the Mokka-e with its 50kWh battery and 201-mile official range with the smaller 39kWh battery option in the Hyundai Kona. The Hyundai's 189-mile range can't quite match the Vauxhall, and nor does it charge as quickly, but as one of the more established electric car offerings there's still plenty it does well.
    To find out how these two style-focused electric crossovers stack up, Vicky compares them for practicality, technology, range, charging, performance, driving, comfort and more.

    I agree with what others have said -- your reviews are absolutely top notch, no nonsense and knowledgeable. I slightly favour the Kia, but prefer the Mokka in terms of its style, particularly interior design. I'm not ready for an EV yet, waiting for the infrastructure to catch up a bit -- and see what Tesla do in terms of giving other brands access to their charging network.

    I really enjoy your reviews. You are one of the best in the business. It's great to see better and better EV products coming into the market that are more affordable than the usual offerings that too often exceed 60k. I like the Mokka overall between these two in terms of design since the Kona is looking a little dated, but it sounds like the KIA would win in the daily-livability category. Also, love the fact that both of these cars are offered in real color options instead of the typical slab of mundane greys I see everywhere. Greys, blaaaah. Great review!

    A great, no-nonsense back-to-back comparison test, Vicky - thank you.
    But, I think you missed something...?
    At about 02:40 in, you state that you'd "talk about the real-world range a bit later when we've driven them some more..." but, unless I zoned-out and missed it - you didn't...? 🤔

    I test drove both, as well as the id3 and Ioniq and bought the Mokka 😎... value for money, none of the others came close! After having the mokka for about 3 months I LOVE all the standard 'extras', find the driving position really comfortable, the screen layout and positioning are perfect. Things I DON'T LIKE are how the range estimator can't be trusted 🤯 and the big bonnet is a waste of space in an EV... apart from that really good car 😎

    What's amazing about the Kona winning this round is that it's practically an antique in the world of EVs. Both the Kona and Niro were released back when a 50kw charger was the standard. Hyundai and Kia have done a fantastic job with the cars in terms of updating them with driver technology.

    • @stephenshannon3706
      @stephenshannon3706 2 года назад

      At peak, the Kona can receive at over 70kW/h when the state of charge is low and the battery warm. It will not sustain that level, few cars have a linear charging curve. It also requires a charger that can offer the higher rate of charge.; these are progressively becoming more common but are still few and far between in the UK, where most rapid chargers still can’t deliver above 50kW/h.

    There is no mention of Hyundai discontinuing the Kona EV from their domestic market and no mention of the UK critical recall for Kona EVs regarding the battery catching fire whilst charging. Has this issue been resolved and are vehicles still being recalled in the UK due to the dangerous issue with the batteries?
