I love this video! It was validating because I've been sewing my own undies for a long time now. My sewing/quilting buddies used to laugh at me when I showed them my homemade 'knickers'. It bothered me at first, then I realized that what I made for myself was 10 times better than what I could buy. I have EXTREMELY sensitive skin and I don't use a serger, I use a regular machine with special stretch stitches. The serged seams can be thick and dig into my hips, leaving painful marks, particularly if worn under slacks or jeans. Seams silly, I know, but the discomfort is real. My favorite finish for the waist and leg openings is just to bind them with a narrow piece of the same fabric - in a contrasting color if I have one. I use good quality 4-way stretch knits of cotton or cotton blends. And as rhondaa 18 said, I also prefer the burrito method for the liner and I think it looks much neater. The undies I make last through many, many, washings and are incredibly comfortable. I've been sewing for over 60 years and love comfort. My own 'home-made's are the best choice for me. Haha happy to hear it! When I was 22 I had no clue ppl made their own undies. Sewing your own clothes was *very* out of fashion when I was growing up. I think that’s why I was drawn to it…
I find the best way to get a good pattern is to find a pair that fits exactly the way you like. A pair that you wore all day and didn't have to think about all day. No pulling riding or pinching. And then wash, take apart carefully and copy on to paper. Yes, you lose your comfy pair if you don't disassemble with care, but you get more pairs that fit the way you like. But if you were careful, you can resew and have them back.
Great point that I didn’t mention. My first pairs were based on my favorite last store-bought pair. Great way to learn different finishing techniques too by studying store pairs.
Concise, informative video. I also sew the front of crotch using burrito method. I hate when the liner curls at the front over time. I made my own pattern by copying my favorite ready-to-wear undies. They don’t sew front crotch, which drove me to copy and sew my own. Just subscribed. Looking forward to checking out more!
I know what you mean about the front part of the liner curling. Do you sew that part down too? I also have some pairs where I used a wool knit fabric for the liner (I know that sounds weird but it’s a nice soft wool) and it’s amazing as a liner because of the wonderful properties of wool. But it has fulled over time with washings. I feel like each pair of undies is another experiment. It’s fun!

I've been gradually eliminating more and more plastic from my life, especially any form of plastic that is in contact with my body for extended periods of time, like clothes or bed linens. But I spent years trying to find underwear that fits the way I like, and when I finally found my holy grail underwear, I bought twelve of them and got rid of all the others. But these undies are a cotton/acrylic blend :( So just yesterday I started thinking, I may have to make my own underwear, how hard could it be? I swear I didn't Google it or anything, but somehow the algorithm read my mind and put this video into my feed this morning! Wild. I guess I'll be making my own undies now.
I love all this! I make just about all my undies from organic cotton scraps that are off-cuts from local production, which makes me so happy from a health + eco perspective. The cotton still has some stretch (plastic) in there but, hey, it’s minimal + really my fave undies just have the edges folded over + stitched. No elastic. So soft on the body. Excited for your journey. Cheering you on!

Excited to get this message! I feel like learning to make my own undies opened a lot of doors in my mind about the possibility of making anything + everything in my life. Love your inspiring video Ann! - Buying underwear has always been more misses than hits. I have plenty that don’t fit which brings me to the idea of trying to make one fitting underpants out of two non-fitting ones.
Do it!! I just love being able to get exactly the style + fit I want. And once you get your pattern + system for sewing down, you can make multiple at a time in an afternoon. Really rewarding.
Great sewing tutorial with very useful adjustment techniques and tips. I’m now looking forward to drafting and sewing underwear with confidence that I know will fit. Thank you!
Glad to hear it! I bought the machine out of a factory liquidator warehouse so it has some history to it. It’s very reliable, I love it so much more than any domestic serger I’ve ever used but it requires a lot more space!
Nice to see your video as underwear these days is made so cheaply and carelessly. My grandmother used to make all the underwear for everyone in their house. And I remember all the pattern companies sold underwear patterns but stopped in the late 70's/80's. What type of serger/overlock machine are you using? Thanks
That’s fun to hear. I definitely never knew anyone who made their own so it was eye-opening to learn I could. I have an industrial Yamato serger that I bought from a factory liquidation warehouse. I talk more about my machine in the home sewing tour video if you’re interested.
Thanks for your easy and informative video. I am never happy with the width of the crotch in most of my purchased underwear. Now I can fix that problem thanks to your instructions !
Can you explain how you attached the FOE in the unfolded method? I can’t find any instructions online, and can’t quite tell how you attached it from the video.
Sure! The raw edge of the fabric is lined up with the fold line in the middle of the FOE. Then from the right side, stitch the FOE to the fabric with a zig-zag. You’re basically omitting the second step of then folding the FOE around the raw edge. Does that make sense?
I used the same fabric as the whole body of the undies. It’s an organic stretch cotton knit. I bought a big bolt of it that I’m going to start selling on my site soon!

Sewsassy.com sells all kinds of fold over elastics and elastic laces, as well as men’s style elastics. EmeraldErin.com also specializes in lingerie materials and has lots of tutorials, patterns, and videos. Fabric.com has Kaufman Laguna stretch cotton in lots of colors that’s great for underwear. Hope this helps!
how would you make it so that one side would not have a seam? i have problems with pain sensitivite over one bursa. it meant i had to stop wearing them cause it caused constant pain
Could you do an undie with center front and center back seam? It’s hard to make a pair without at least 2 seams. Cloth Habit.com has a free panty on their site with CF and CB seam.
@@AnnTilleyHandmade worth a try. ihad never considered it. i just saw your tutorial and it got my mind thinking. i have had to make so many changes to my wardrobe to accomodate the problem. i was wondering about doing it by making the seams by one on the right side and crotch
@@AnnTilleyHandmade I have a Kwik Sew pattern with a CB seam only (and crotch seam), I love it. Comfortable laying on my side and no weird pressure points or agitating areas on the hips and legs because there are no seams / bumps on the leg opening!
That’s a really fair question + something I’ve debated heavily in my mind. If you went for a 100% cotton, the problem would be that the fabric would relax while you’re wearing it + start to fall down. Then I would suggest edging everything with elastic. But if you’re wanting to avoid elastic, that doesn’t work. I feel like the best solution I’ve found so far is a 95/5% organic cotton/lycra with no elastic edging that could be potentially composted after end of life. Maybe you could bind the edges of the 100% cotton with an all-cotton binding? I have not experimented with it.
@@AnnTilleyHandmade I am fine with elastic waistbands and such. Not so much the body and gusset. Really making me think how underwear was designed before the advent of fibers/fabrics made with petroleum byproducts.
I use this yummy organic cotton fabric for my undies and it does feel so superior than what I used to buy. I feel like the undies I used to buy were never big enough to cover my butt too!
@@AnnTilleyHandmade Hello again, I wanted to ask you, shall we pull the fabric when using the non elastic finishing method? When only folding and using a 3 step zigzag
You want to pull the fabric enough that the 2 layers sit nice and flat with each other, but not so much that you're fighting with the feed dogs. You still want the fabric to move evenly under the presser foot. Sometime if I have to pull more than I would like, I will counter the pull by also pulling on the fabric behind the foot. But always making sure that the feed dogs are still being allowed to pull evenly.
Haha yes my industrial Yamato serger. I got it from a factory liquidator warehouse for a steal! I talk about it more in my Home Sewing Tour video. It’s old enough that there’s only English in the manual… 60s maybe?
Hmmm I’m not sure. The tricot I’ve worked with seems like it wouldn’t have enough stretch to be comfortable but I’ve never used it for undies, only for bras.
@@AnnTilleyHandmade thank you. I have a small sewing school in Africa and I'm hiring the women to make 500 underwear to donate to a poor school. I needed a material that would last for a couple years and not get holes and I thought tricot would be the strongest and still stretch. What is your thoughts on jersey? Would it hold up to time? What about the backs of old Tshirts? Im not a good sewer but my heart is in my little sewing school.
You’ll need to find a good pattern to start with. I am working on releasing some soon! I like to use a 95% cotton/5% stretch knit jersey. 4-way stretch
swear the ones i just brought have less material resulting to tight for "mens" parts somethings u dont mess with first they made mens packs from 7 when you buy them down to 4 pks now they scrimping on the fit as well
This is great! I started making my own underwear at the beginning of the pandemic, because I'd been frustrated with purchased underwear for awhile and I finally had time at home to dedicate to it. I do mine a little differently (burrito method for the crotch, turn in/sew down both front and back of the liner, picot elastic + folded-in edge), but I still can use several of these tips, especially cutting the liner at the same time as the front and adjusting the length/rise. Can I ask, what is the reason for using the dotted zigzag on the folded in edges? I usually use a regular zigzag but I'm interested to know if dotted zigzag would be better!
I did a bunch of research trying to determine the best stitch here. One place said if you do dotted zigzag, you’re generally doing shorter stitches to help protect against popped stitches, but I can’t say from personal experience if one is definitely better than the other. I do like the look of the dotted zigzag here.
You don't even need a proper "pattern". Just take apart an old pair and use that as your pattern. That's a good start. Tweak your design as you become more experienced. Good video.....
Thanks for this tutorial. I have very sensitive skin and am finding it harder to find cotton or blends, unless they are white briefs (granny panties my husband calls them... But I AM a grandmother). I am disgusted how "green" undergarments are overtaking our clothing; some even say "recycled plastic." These are toxic to our health since our skin is the largest organ and absorbs what is on it. I can't wait to make some. 😊
I don’t think I ever heard of people making their own undies. I remember my old boss showed me how to make my own deodorant and it blew my mind. Then I was like what else in my life can I make? So then I made my own house lol that was an undertaking!
I want to sew my own underwear because I want to have more control over my own participation in capitalism. Give a person a pair of $15 ethical underwear, and you've clothed their butt for a day per week until it wears out. Teach a person to sew their own underwear and now they can clothe their butt as much as they need! (I find work to be draining, so I'd rather spend some of my time making underwear rather than spend my time at work and pay for the underwear)

Exactly! It can be a fun smaller sewing project with lots of creative/custom opportunities. I do have my own underwear pattern I designed + am hoping to get it up for sale on my site sometime in the next few months!
Your surger is awesome
It’s from a factory liquidation warehouse! It’s old enough that the manual is typewriter typed and only in English.
@@AnnTilleyHandmade is it a 3 phase motor? If so, how did you wire for that?
I'm looking at getting this same machine! They said it is three phase
@@alyenendrovtsorokean7406it got rewired for single phase from the warehouse I purchased it from. Recently I switched it out for a servo motor that’s much more quiet with speed control!
Hi. Thanks for show us. I am learning making undergarment. Where did you get your supplies here in USA? Fabrics, elastics, etc
Yes, I would also like to know where you got your fabrics & elastics here in the USA.
The only national in-store option really is Jo-Ann’s so I tend to buy online if my small, independent shop here doesn’t have what I need.
@@AnnTilleyHandmade Much appreciated!
how would you make it so that one side would not have a seam? i have problems with pain sensitivite over one bursa. it meant i had to stop wearing them cause it caused constant pain
@@uniquegeek2708 i will take a look for that as well. both sound like they would be perfect. thank you both
Love it!
Thanks!! Glad to hear it 😊
Do you have any recommendation if I don't want stretch fabric (i.e. no synthetic materials)?
Mariah Pattie has a video where she makes her own underwear, primarily from linen and cotton scraps. You might find some ideas there, too.
@@thebookwyrmslair6757 thanks for sharing this!
Pinned for reference. It’s sad but I’ve found lately underwear are often garbage. Hopefully sewing will create a better result..
I use this yummy organic cotton fabric for my undies and it does feel so superior than what I used to buy. I feel like the undies I used to buy were never big enough to cover my butt too!
I subscribed 😊😊. I've always wanted to sew my own underwear. 😊
I am working on releasing a variety of my fave underwear patterns in the next few months, so be on the lookout of that!
Great video
Thank you!
You are fascinating to watch!
You make me blush ☺️
@@AnnTilleyHandmade Hello again, I wanted to ask you, shall we pull the fabric when using the non elastic finishing method? When only folding and using a 3 step zigzag
You want to pull the fabric enough that the 2 layers sit nice and flat with each other, but not so much that you're fighting with the feed dogs. You still want the fabric to move evenly under the presser foot. Sometime if I have to pull more than I would like, I will counter the pull by also pulling on the fabric behind the foot. But always making sure that the feed dogs are still being allowed to pull evenly.
@@AnnTilleyHandmade Thank you very much !
Thanks! Well put and easy to follow x
you are a REAL woman testing with pin in place
lol!
Nice job! What kind of weird serger is that???
Haha yes my industrial Yamato serger. I got it from a factory liquidator warehouse for a steal! I talk about it more in my Home Sewing Tour video. It’s old enough that there’s only English in the manual… 60s maybe?
Wow! Looks like it runs smoothly!
Can i use tricot???
How do sew a bigger size, like a 10? What fabrics do you purchase for this garment?
You’ll need to find a good pattern to start with. I am working on releasing some soon! I like to use a 95% cotton/5% stretch knit jersey. 4-way stretch
swear the ones i just brought have less material resulting to tight for "mens" parts
somethings u dont mess with first they made mens packs from 7 when you buy them down to 4 pks now they scrimping on the fit as well
I know it’s however they can cut corners to save a buck. Do younger generations even know what quality clothing is like?
Just saw this vid. Looking to see if you do bras.
I’m working on a video now about bras! Hopefully will be out in the next month
Thank You🌸
Glad you enjoyed. Thanks for watching!
@@AnnTilleyHandmade Thanks! I'll try it next time and see which I prefer :)
Hmm. I would’ve loved to have seen the mannequin model the “before and after” undies so that i could get the visual.
Good idea I didn’t think of! Thanks for your feedback
Old tshirts can make really cute panties.
I’ve never tried that but I can imagine some fun imagery with a sew like that!
I came to say that. Same for nightgowns
thank you
Thanks for watching!
Cool 😀
😁
I need to learn to sew my own underwear.
You can do it!
❤ Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
Thank you : )
Was wondering if anybody does this, sewing underwear... because now the cotton underwear I bought in the past is something like $28 per package.
We out here! I haven’t bought underwear since… 2016??
Fantastic video. @@AnnTilleyHandmade
I'm in my 20s and just learned the little pocket in undies is a liner and not a pocket to store coins or something 😅
lol! Multitool haha
Please, please, please what is the name of the pattern of the dress you are wearing? High waisted, deep V, gathered shoulders - swoon!
The brand is called Xirena. I don’t see the dress on their site currently.. my mom got it for me for Xmas a couple years ago. It is a favorite!
You don't even need a proper "pattern". Just take apart an old pair and use that as your pattern. That's a good start. Tweak your design as you become more experienced. Good video.....
Great point!
Excited for you to make some!
Thanks Ann, for all your expertise, I notice you cannot find good underwear anymore.
That sure sadden me.
I can only imagine! And it’s such a staple. I think life is better with high-quality, well-fitting undies!
Yikes! Maybe use safety pins! Really helpful video, though.
I’m not sure why I do the things I do 😂
My mother made all our underwear in the 60's....and I am 74
I don’t think I ever heard of people making their own undies. I remember my old boss showed me how to make my own deodorant and it blew my mind. Then I was like what else in my life can I make? So then I made my own house lol that was an undertaking!
Hell yeahhh 🎉 so over cheap over priced undies
Haha exactly! Not to mention ill-fitting!
great video, but please do your video without the loud background music. please
It’s certainly easier to make videos without music!
👏👏 love it! I started making my own undies after seeing all the stretch cotton off-cuts from production at my old job. It felt so amazing to make for myself with free “waste”! I’m never going to the mall again!
I feel really stupid right now lol
Oh no! I’m sorry!
