Hey everyone! Thanks for watching. If you're new around these parts and would like to keep up to date with new videos please subscribe! I try to upload every week if I can. Thanks!
Omgoodness I totally agree with you on the 'panties' term. I didn't even want to write it! We go with 'undies' or 'undercrackers' in our Aussie household.
American here, I never say "panties". I agree, it IS a cringy word . Everyone I know says mostly, " underwear" or "undies" or the old fashioned "bloomers" (if being silly). I do love your use of "knickers". "Pants" are a general term for full length jeans or trousers. Use your word, "knickers". I've heard the word many times so know what it means, I think most Americans do. If they don't, I think they can figure it out from the context of your video. Thank you for your video, I'm concerned with the way things are in the world that we might not be able to get elastic (and other things) or afford it at some point. So good to know different ways of making necessities. ❤
Agreed. Literally no one I've every met uses that word. They are undies or underwear. I do not know who coined the word or where it is being used, but it isn't by actual American women.
*Chuckle!* I'm from the US and I hate the word "panties," too. I usually call them underpants or undies as others have said. 😂😂 I appreciate the advice on sewing underpants without elastic. Seems like it should be doable with 95%/5% Cotyon/lycra blend. :)
This looks like a great way to use those old LuLaRoe leggings we all have stashed away! And I'm from the US, but much prefer the term knickers! It's fun and cute.
Basically a good idea. Love that pattern; it is so comfortable. However, I like to use elastic with it as it is more stable. Still ....if you find this method is good for you .... go for it! The great thing about sewing is that we can sew things to our own specifications. Love, love this pattern. Good job.
That is a great idea, with put elastic, because I can’t find decorative elastic on the island. And that you use Lycra even better for me, so this is a super video you made thank you so much....👍🏻❤️❤️❤️
Right on! This tutorial is great. I’m so glad you made this video because I was having trouble finding the elastic made for “pants” as we call them in this video, but now I don’t need elastic at all for a perfect pant fit. 😉❤️
I have just subscribed to your channel. I have never made knickers but I am going to after watching your video. What I like about this pattern is that there are no seams apart from the sides, the gusset is a good width and there is a high waist. Now to find some material. Kindest regards.
Thanks for this great video! I appreciate that you included lots of specific information about materials and methods, and at a pace that was easy to follow. I also appreciated the quality of the editing, with just enough humor to be fun but not distracting. Thanks for keeping cats, parrots, and jazzy music out of the video. I will save this video for future guidance.
I hate that word too & I’m in the US (am half English)! Pants works, knickers more palatable 😊. Great video, thank you!! 😊 Just saw you were on the sewing bee. Alas, we can’t watch it over here 😢 but I’ve seen clips. Love that show!!
I so appreciate your videos and projects. Question: have you ever tried to coverstitch the gusset? Meaning eliminate the seams in the back and front of the gusset. Cut it a bit slimmer... place it on the knicker material and coverstitch it down. ? I would love to hear from you. Thanks for all the projects you share. 😃
You had me in stitches! No, literally as well, really funny, I totally hit that subscribe button. Gave me the confidence to start my project to make my pants with stretch lycra and no elastic, and really useful gussety tips, thank you. I've just started making things and I'm totally hooked.
Thanks for such a good tutorial. Loved the humourous editing too! Only thing I struggled with was the "grading" of the gusset part - could you possibly show this in more detail please if you do another underwear video? Low rise boy shorts, or bikini briefs would be ace! PS thank you also for including the captions option.
Hi Anne. The grading just means that I cut into the seam allowance layers of the gusset seam at varying widths. One layer was cut about ⅜", one about ¼" and one about ½" just to stop the seam being super bulky. You could overlock that seam if you wanted but I find it's better straight stitched and graded.
Thanks for your video. You asked if there was anything viewers would like to see. Just wondering if you could do a video on how to sew a concealed zip on to a pair of trousers? That would be very helpful to my sewing. Thanks, I like your style of video 👍
Do you use regular cotton in a sewing machine or do you need to use elasticated thread in your bobbin? Also would 94% cotton 6%lycra with a gsm 202 have the same effect
Well done Liz, great to watch this tutorial. I remember you from Great British sewing Bee!! Called Undies in Australia. Will definitely try this. I like high waisted undies as so comfy. What machine do you have please.
Hi Viddy, my machines are all Juki brand now. When I made this video I was still sewing on my Pfaff Ambition. It was a good machine but I like my Juki UX8 best.
Lovely video, thank you. Sewing Bee has encouraged me to learn to sew. I have a sewing machine but it seems a lot of projects would benefit from having an over locker - is it worth getting one and are they easy enough to use? Thank you
Honestly if you ask anyone who bought an Overlocker they will tell you it will take your sewing to the next level, especially on stretch fabrics. They're not hard to use, it's just worth noting that overlocked seams are a bit more irritating to unpick and impossible to correct if something is too small (they chop the seam allowance off)
Did you cut out the pieces by copying an existing pair, or did I miss something in a previous video? Would be worried about cutting out the right size and shape
It depends for which part of the construction you're referring to. If side seams/connecting the gusset pieces i would favour a triple straight stitch which is stretchy and won't pop. If your machine doesn't have that stitch you could try a really shallow zig zag or lightning stitch.
Is 94% Cotton, 6% Spandex fabric good for this? I’m from the US and I’ve only heard people refer to them as underwear. The only time I hear the word panties is from retailers lol
I call them undies. That way they are either for girls boys or other👍 I an a Mumma of two daughters and one son. One of the under garment patterns has two pieces for the gusset. And the seam is sandwiched in so there isn't a raw edge. It is a brilliant way. It is a little fiddly but once you understand how it works, it is 'why didn't I think of that!' Kind of situation!😆😊❤️👍
OMG I HATE THE WORD PANTIES TOO! Literally makes me cringe lol. Recognised your voice before i saw your face. Loved you on Sewing Bee, your makes were right up my street. Im trying to find a decent knickers tutorial i can adapt for period underwear. But im plus size so its proving difficult
Hey! I was surprised to see a familiar face from great British sewing bee when I opened- Thanks for the video. I’ve just started delving into the world of underwear and have just finished my 3rd pair using a kwik sew pattern. I’m just wondering if I should go one size down if I’m not using elastic or if I’m using an exceptionally stretchy fabric? 🩲
It's not a bad idea to size down if your fabric is very stretchy. But I think what I would do is cut the bigger size and take them in if they needed it.
@@LizGrylls yes, probably! I’m Canadian (living in Spain), and for us “pants” means “trousers”. Underwear, or undies is a good compromise. I also have a sewing channel, and have to walk the tightrope between UK and North American terms. ;) :):)
I've just subbed to your channel and will be checking your vids out. Fun story, I once asked in a predominantly US FB group if anyone had a recommendation for a good period pants pattern. Much confusion followed 🤣

Hello Liz. Great video. Where is the best place or way to purchase cotton lycra please? Only Hobbycraft around here or online. Can you recommend a company? Thanks 👍
I usually get mine online. Tia Knight is cheap and offers loads of plain colours. For nice prints you could try 1st for Fabrics, Splashings of Fabrics and Little Legs Fabrics which are websites I've used before and liked the quality. If anyone else has any recommendations for jersey suppliers please drop a reply to this comment!
Since I do not have a coverstitch machine yet, Is there any way to make these with 100% serger. I could whip out the sewing machine and do it. I am working on a few lycra projects now.
You'd still need a way of hemming them around the legs and waist. There is a way with the serger in theory. You can either make a mock "band" by folding the hem up and then back on itself and serging (overlocking) the edge. Or there is a way to get a flat lock which involves loosening the tension on the left needle and doing as above with the mock band but do not cut the edge. When you flatten the hem back out you get vertical stitches on the right side and overlocking on the back. I'd consider both of these methods "hacks" though and your sewing machine might give a neater finish. If you're up for the experiment though it could be interesting!
@@LizGrylls Thank you for the information. We are going to start searching for an cover stitch machine. I watched a lot of your videos and really like what I see and now I want one of them.

While a twin needle is great for hemming dresses, I don't find it stretchy enough for waist bands like this.

panties not( pants = trousers) :)
I'm allergic to elastic. I wanted to use my 100% organic cotton fabric, but it has 30% mechanical stretch.
You could try it, I think the lack of stretch is less of a problem because you can easily size up to counteract that, a bigger problem will be a lack of recovery in the fabric.
I dislike the word panties as well, lol.
Does it matter what weight of cotton spandex is used?
A little bit, but only in the way that the heavier the weight of CL that you use it might be less stretchy than something in a lighter weight.
So you might find that the same size in a heavier weight might be more snug.
Agree. I hate that'P' word too. Gives me the shivers. Slightly misogynistic
