- Sorry for the randomness of this video, I previously talked about this subject around 2 years ago and we're still waiting for a response from Games Workshop, I think I may have to accept that this project is truly gone now, which is a massive shame.

GW happened. Creativity is crushed by big companies.
Sadly I can see this
This feels very much like what happened. Oh he's a good animator, make him work on everything that's not a sequel to Astartes
@@dk292 You can't create passion projects like that with a harpy behind you telling you what to do. That's just now how humans work.
I doubt that's the case. Astartes (the original one) took an insane amount of time to make, and I doubt they added much crew behind the project. I assume it's still a tiny production team, so I assume this will take as long as the original one took to make. Which we don't exactly know how long it took... it was a massive project for the original guys who did the project.

That sounds vaguely like HERESY.
It was never a "partnership", GW essentially just absorbed him so he wouldn't make what they're putting out look bad.
Fan Artists: "Hey GW. How about we produce quality animations that drive old and new fans to buy your products at no cost to you."
GW Marketing: "F You! CEASE AND DESIST!"
They are role plying grim dark little too literal
"CEASE AND DESIST!" At this point this is straigh-up lies. There was no massive C&S letters campaign by GW and after all those years, you can literally open RUclips and see that old animations, recent ones and myriads of reuploads of paid WH+ shows are still here, with thousand and even millions of views (as example Astarters reupload has 18mill right now). It would understandable if there were large history of GW hunting down fancreators and their works, but the whole C&S is just myth spread by community.
Community loves to say this crap, it has literally never happened, one guy did quit and it was because of the community hounding him like a pack of mongoloids and not GW.
@@ruslanhoncharenko2179 Yup, pure hater bullshite.

Astartes got me into Warhammer 40K. As soon as GW changed the music and sound effects of Syama's original Astartes, I knew they weren't gonna let the man work. A damn shame.
The music and sounds were so perfect 😭
thats why as soon as I heard he'd been bought out by GW I downloaded the high quality version of the original Astartes.
If memory serves they changed them because he took them from a film OST. It had nothing to do with letting "the man work" it was just a legal issue.
Tbf though, he was using copyrighted soundtracks. I could clearly identify one piece directly from the movie "Dredd".
I guess GW's interception was at least partially legit.
He used star citizen music so there is no way that could stay.
From what I heard, they hired him and he actively works on their trailers. Not confirmed, but I heard he had a big hand in the Horus Heresy and Leviathan trailers

all animation stuff on WH+ stopped. imagine if we got Astartes 2, angels of Death, Paria and the Tau one, that would have been great.
This is by far the best looking 40k animation in existence. It's a travesty.
Last anything I can find from the guy (Samya) was over a year ago in 2023 and him doing concept work for different personal projects (something called Yatra 45), and his linkedin etc list him as being 'Freelance', not GW employed. So my guess would be GW screwed him over.

I’ve been monitoring the comment section and I’m pleased with the responses, you get negative stuff everywhere but mostly people are being good 👍🏻
I’m sorry you see this as bait/drama, if you follow my content then you know I mostly focus on the positives, making drama for clicks not my intention, I comment all time how much I dislike that, as I said in the video I saw that random clip show up on my feed and it got me pumped to make this video
Its really easy. GW decided they know whats best for everyone. They took control and rather than let the man finish something important to the community they killed it so he could work on other things for them. Because GW knows best
But the fans must approve because they keep coming back
Syama pedersen himself confirmed to Janovich that Astartes was indeed a one man project, and that he didn't work with a small team (though he said he'd love to have a team). Dome creators helped by making certain 3d assets (such as the predator turret) and he also used some already existing 3d assets like cables, but that's about it.
GW bought him so he couldn’t make anything new
Couldnt let their hammer and bolter trash be overshadowed.
I remember watching it for the first time, it is what got me into 40K. The Astartes video and the Helsreach video are incredible and better than anything Netflix, Disney and Amazon have put out.

They're not even using his style of animation. I can understand using multiple styles of animation, but nothing has been produced to his caliber. To those saying he played a role in the Horus Heresy trailer, that is possible. But that trailer was not to his standards and looked more like a 2010 - 2015 game trailer. It wasn't bad; however I think Astartes would want a more polished video with better sounds and visuals.
There are unconfirmed rumors that Syama left GW on bad terms. And, again, rumors - he had such a bad experience working there that he does not want or to do anything with Warhammer anymore.
I thought, if anyone knew anything about that, that would Mr. Foilrak. But apparently not.
All his linkedin etc list him as being freelance, so that wouldn't surprise me.

Basically from my understands they were given a choice, join them or stop. Which I still to this day absolutely hate.
Nope.
No, this isn't the case. Since there are new animations for 40k on RUclips, they aren't deleted. And most importantly, tons of reuploads with shitton of views, GW isn't striking them either. Community kinda overreacted back then, but it turned out to be nothing burger.
@@ChapterMasterValrak AStartes was. And then they hired him.
You cant make profit off making content related to GW. In the same vein TTS was never forced to stop but when you have a production crew to pay you only have one choice.
GW hasn't gone full Nintendo but I think calling it a nothing burger is disingenious.
When you know there's a legal sword of damocles that can drop on you regardless of profit or not, people don't want that headache.

astartes guy would of done so much more for warhammer on his own than being hired by them, how crazy is that. GW just literally let him have full creative control over a show and its golden its a home run, how can they be so stupid.
At this point - I am only watching Project Morningstar, Warheads, and Scorch to get that Astartes fix. Honestly that animation was the reason I picked up a brush and painting a space marine
GW staff now worship Slaanesh!
It got to popular and GW DIDNT like it so they bought it out and BINNED IT
This. Can't let the captive audience raise their expectations.
Someone finds a cure to cancer: government makes sure they dissappear.
Someone makes a 40k animation that is incredible: GW makes them disappear
pretty much
There is no easy way to cure all cancer. Cancer isn't one ailment, it's an umbrella term for a crapton of different diseases.
Now if you talk about cheap insulin and nuclear energy however,
I can tell you 100% that the Astartes project was my first step in getting back into the hobby. It was a piece so amazing that it broke into the general 'media' and got across the concept of 40k so perfectly that all the old memories came back and I wanted to get back into it.
So, GW should make more of it! Or at least more as good as it was.
the thing is GW are known for never crediting artists for there work so the guy that made ASTARTES "could have worked on their trailers" but we will never know this is one of many things about GW i add to my BOOK OF GRUDGES is for all the great art that is made for the trailers and codex books, box art, or whatever, when you try to find the artist who made it it is never as straightforward of just looking at the art to see who made it.
Before Astartes I was just into the occasional Luetin video and hearing my friends talk about the lore. I thought first born marines looked ridiculous and were disproportional especially with their legs. I never saw them properly on screen or in action and I didn’t know what primaris marines were.
After I saw Astartes, two things happened. First, my itch to see highly trained, highly skilled figures on screen working tactically and efficiently was scratched. It was like what John Wick did for action movies but for a fantasy genre. Second, I now had a mental image in my head for what space marines were. Lightning fast, tactical killing machines. It drew me right into the IP and now I own 3000 pts of marines and close to 1000 pts of Battle sisters. All because of this animation and what it brought to the universe.
GW happened.
The Astartes video is what brought me into Warhammer. Also the introduction of the Primaris marine models. I loved how proportionate they were compared to the older models
GW bought him. They hired him for the promise of being able to create and get paid for it; and they ensured that his projects wouldn’t get made. The government does the same thing with patents. They’ll buy your patent and then lock it in a vault.
He’s definitely been animating for GW, they just don’t credit their artists.
For the company that said warhammer is for everyone and hates people gatekeeping to protect the lore it’s rich that they practically gate keep their IP and models by copyrighting fan animations and making everything super expensive. Warhammer is for everyone but not if you’re poor, make animations or respect the lore.
Didn't gw acquire the creator of the astartes project? Pretty sure he worked on the piriah nexus project last year.
and the Tau one.
no he didn‘t
As far I was aware, he'd been hired by GW and has basically helped work on their big 3D animation projects since. I remember people talking about him having worked on Pariah Nexus but I can't remember if that ever got confirmed. Certainly the animation for Pariah Nexus is the most like Astartes in the form of the fluidity of the space marine's movement & their ability to move at speed.
When GW hired the guy, there was a widespread understanding that the Astartes project is dead.
The youtube channel got wiped, but a while ago the same channel (I'm pretty sure it was the same channel) was rebranded and published a "pilot" episode with legally distinct "not space marines", it had all the hallmarks of the Astartes project, but I don't think any more has come out of it yet.
Hes already quit gw because they had them just animating promotion material and hes under a none competition agreement for 3 years
This was the video that brought me back to the hobby after 23 years.
It is downloaded and I watch it in its original glory at least once a month.
Weird how the fan stuff that sticks with the fandom is the best stuff. Weird.
An open mind is like a Fortress with it's gates un-barred and un-guarded.
Astartes is 98.9 percent of the reason I ever got into the idea of Warhammer. I remember seeing it thinking hmm, this looks interesting..WOW! What sucks is I started at the top and nothing is really in the ballpark to astartes. It makes you want to watch it again, slow down scenes, think about what the heck you just watched. It really is one of the best action animations of all time.
If they were smart they would’ve given him free reign and funding in return for a kick ass series they could use for warhammer plus. They aren’t smart.
When the space marines boarded the rebel ship is the first war hammer content I saw and since then I've been A warhammer addict.
GW extrapolated the cost per second of doing full episodes at that quality, and thought "fffffffffffffffffffffffuuuuuuuu how many miniatures is that?"
ASTARTES brought a huge amount of people to the IP, I for one know about 20 people that got into warhammer40k due to the sheer awesomeness of it, I had no idea what was happening, hell even after an ungodly amount of time consuming 40k lore, I still don't
YET ITS STILL THE SINGLE BEST 40K ANIMATION IVE SEEN
He was making those firstborn mariens look too badass.
GW: "Not promoting primaris marines? SHUT IT DOWN LADS!!"
This dude deserved better treatment. He became very popular and lived as an animator and the GW absolutely crushed that potential. Now look where we're at. Amazon trying to strong arm GW into bending the lore for fenale space marines and femstodes. What a time to be alive.
Totally agreed with you. This by far the most awaited Warhammer animated series , and they announced it years ago and then silence. I suspect the silence means at least that its not coming this year.
My money is that the author didn't want to sign over any rights to the show and GW didn't want to fund a show that they don't own out right. So its frozen in time until the author gets fired by GW once the TV series fails and moves to Netflix, Prime, etc.
I still think the cinematic from the opening cut scene of dawn of War one still holds up today and would great to see more cinematic like that
Astartes was the best advert for the game they ever had. Even the people who wanted nothing to do with the hobby I showed it too loved it
This Animation came out at the right time, was created by fans for fans and brought in more people interested in 40k,The creator is locked away somewhere
It got taken off of RUclips because GW bought it hook line and sinker from the creator. The original videos used a load of copyrighted audio material which had to get changed and did when it was reuploaded to War-Com. The power armour sounds were taken from Fallout 4's power armour sound, most of the music used was taken from the Dredd 3D soundtrack and had to be replaced.
I remember leaving a comment some time early last year saying the same thing and you said it was on Warhammer+ and going to be coming
Still waiting.
As someone NEW to the Hobby.
Past 6 months…
GW business practice is perplexing.
1) Their communication on releasing new content / models is very poor and confusing. For example, I’m still confused as to whether Bretonnian Foot Knights have been actually released? Or it’s still a pre-order thing?
2) what’s with the whole limited production? Limited product lines? Stuff selling out, being impossible to get?
3) stuff that’s super popular and people wanting to spend money and buy - but they don’t reissue it? (E.g Space Hulk)
4) cancelling certain factions, parts of armies then making them redundant for those who bought them? (Stormcast Eternals recently)
The very definition of 'catch and kill', that's what happened.
Im pretty sure he was working with sabreware on spacemarine movement in spacemarine 2
Astartes was absolutely incredible. It was exactly how I imagined the world of 40k come to life. Watched it 100x times
I thought the creator of Astartes has been working on the GW trailers and the pariah nexus shows? That would make sense why there’s been no news about astartes 2
Love your enthusiasm ; its genuinely heart warming to see someone who loves warhammer so much
Me too man... Astartes Project got me back into Warhammer 40k after many years of being out of the hobby.
On a gamble, I just shot the official warhammer twitter account a message asking for any kind of update. I doubt I'll get a reply, or anything more than a "we can't tell, teehee!".
But if it's anything interesting I'll share my results.
Could always just en-mass just start asking, loudly, in public, they can't ignore us forever, especially if it's the only question they get asked over and over. I feel entitled to an answer about the goddamn status of the project since they took away so many other fan animators from that era.
Remember the Death of Hope! Remember Sodaz! And praise be to the God Animator Syama!
yeah, I recall reaction movies where people later apologized for saying Astrates and not Astartes, because they had no idea of this before and they were so blown away. This man earned GW more money than anyone cares to admit
I’d forgotten that Astartes actually put a trailer out for season two. I was just waiting on him to drop something epic on the WH+
My guess is they forced him on board and instead of saying "You are amazing at what you do so just keep at it, if there is anything we can give you to make it faster or better let us know." they probably pushed him around between projects of their choosing or intervened in any project he was heading until he eventually just quit.
Oh and the reason they aren't reuploading it to youtube is because they want 100% of 40k animations on their platform to force as many people in the hobby to pay them a monthly fee.
Two scenarios I see most likely being the case:
1: The creator got put into a team that works on trailers/pariah nexus etc. And is now just a nameless faceless animator who hopefully gets a decent paycheck for his work.
2: GW "bought him out" under threat of taking legal action against his channel because he single-handedly absolutely clowned on anything GW had in the pipeline for years and years to come. I'd hate for this to be the case, but let's be honest, Astartes puts every single trailer and animated series on Warhammer TV to ABSOLUTE shame.
I didn't think there was an expectation that the Astartes project was going to continue when the guy was hired by them. Astartes was his passion, hobby project. But now he is likely involved with whatever project(s) they have going on with WarhammerTV. Perhaps the question should be then what is WarhammerTV doing because I never hear about or from them, and they are all short form, which arguably isn't going to keep people invested long term. They need to make *shows*, not animated tiktok's basically.
Thank you, Valrak! I've been asking this question for the past two years and I still cannot fathom why. Why would they deny us the glory of Astartes 2?
Space Marines 2 devs used Astartes as a base to get the space marines "weight" correctly for the game. I believe Syama is no longer at GW and is currently Freelancing.
Another point too is that with copyright issues, GW had to re-score the animation so the video on GW's website just isn't the same as the original due to the score having been edited.
I missed that time where there was so many 40k fan animations.... and GW goes and kills it all.
I hate to say it Valrak, but they smothered it in its crib. They stole away the creator to work on broader projects because they could not stand the fact that one guy (along with other independent creators) were outshining the Games Workshop marketing and outreach and doing better work than them by a country mile.
Warhammer+ is, frankly, a fallow field in comparison to the bumper harvest we once had in terms of WH 40k fan content.
"Punch-Smash-BLAM-BLAM-BLAM"
I know you all just heard it.
I think we can all agree that the man behind Astartes loved the Hobby so much and knew the universe so well he could craft something that captured the pure essence of 40K with no spoken words, just noises and Images.
Only someone who loves a thing can do that.
it's a real shame GW did what they did they pissed all over everyone chips, including their own.
I feel like Iron Within had almost Astartes vibes, I wonder if he had creative input on that
If you read his posts on his patreon
He got the same treatment as Sodaz
He was NDAed.
He is now working on another project called V45.
Which he hasn't updated anything about it since the end of last year
it showed what one man with dedication can do, it showed that GW with all its resources has other priorities, and so it had to be put down
GW nicked Astartes with a poisoned blade and it had to be placed into a stasis field. Now we watch and wait until it can be awoken.
Last thing he had a hand in as far as I can tell was the ChoasGate Trailer and MAYBE the Heresy trailer
I started playing DnD in 1980 along with war gaming titles from Avalon Hill. I played first Warhammer and then 40K when a buddy in High School turned me on to them. I hadn't really been tuned into 40K since after college, but after seeing the Astartes videos on RUclips, I felt that deep interest being rekindled. I have genuinely felt saddened to see such Love and Respect for 40K be stamped out by Games Workshop; But I've seen that Corp attitude from Hasbro /Wizards of the Coast for DnD.
Imagine stifling creativity because a single person showed you up. They should have written him a blank cheque and told him to “Keep working.”
By the Emperor's hairy Balls , those chapter banners on your wall are the coolest things ever. Where did you get them made?
If we ever see a astartes again it will be after whatever contract that guy was forced to sign expires
I think that GW bought out the creator's work under threat of lawsuit, just so they didn't have to compete with him. Nothing they have ever produced either before or after Astartes was released has been as good as Astartes itself. I heard the creator of Astartes works for GW now producing stuff for Warhammer+, but based on the poor quality of the shows on there I have my doubts.
Pariah Nexus was hardly a poor job and not inferior to Astartes.
As a Grey Knights fan, I do have a special place in my heart for Syama after that absolutely spectacular cinematoc for Chaos Gate: Daemonhunters.
We need to know
Maybe he's working on space marine 2 animations
hahaha
I'm a fan of games/IPs from a few different companies, and I'm always looking for signs of the kind of leadership that these companies employ. Good stuff can come out from under bad leadership, but bad leadership makes the entire process FAR harder and more likely to go wrong than it would otherwise be.
- Marvel under Feige: Largely solid. Good unifying vision with enough creative freedom for good individual projects. Competent leaders.
- LucasFilm under Kennedy: Definitely a victim of people being promoted beyond their competence. Just because someone's a brilliant film producer, that doesn't mean that they make a good film executive. Competent people who aren't competent leaders.
- Disney in general under Chapek: Every decision was obviously made by bean counters who didn't understand the creative industry AT ALL and were driven to impliment a conservative corporate agenda. Executive meddling is obviously rampant. Incompetent leaders.
- DC under WB (prior to Gunn): Leadership has been very disorganized, leading to both a lack of unified vision and an unwillingness to part from an obviously failing direction. A revolving door of incompetent leaders.
- D&D and M:tG under Hasbro: Utterly disastrous incompetence from a C-suite irrationally dedicated to repeating every mistake in the AAA video game industry and other tech-bro venture capitalism failures. Leaders so incompetent that it looks like they're intentionally sabotaging their own company.
- 40K under GW: Looks like absentee leadership. Whoever is in charge either delegates so much that there's no clear direction or purpose for people to work with or they just don't lead at all and just expect everyone under them to form a unified vision without any structure to do so. Who's leading this thing again?
What I see with GW doesn't look like there's an idiot behind the wheel like many of these other examples; it looks like there's NO ONE behind the wheel at all.
Syama Pedersen was milked so hard he became a blood donor, they went too far and put him in stasis to keep him alive. GW are sitting on a treasure trove of content, releasing it piece by piece whenever their stock drops
They threw him in the sausage grinder and now he's in all the Tzaangors.
Thank you for speaking up on this. Its been rubbing me wrong for awhile.
They knowingly or not traded top shelf quality word of mouth advertising and a revitalizing of fans (paying consumers) already in for a blinded idea of exclusivity (despite being the town ip), an end to most any fan project ( If the Emperor had text to speech is on that list), and the burning down of any progress the fans were starting to build back up for their image. But hey they didn't have to worry about the fan animation outstripping anything they forced down the pipeline so I guess to them it's a win regardless of its actual effect.
just went through the comments and wow there are a LOT of gw boot lickers demanding that just because the mafia didn't actually ransack and burn down the fan projects that they are completely innocent and everyone who can fucking read the neon writing on the wall is a coping contrarian. great work guys im sure the big guy will love you for your blind loyalty
I think most of the GW old guard who might have supported things like Astartes are long gone from the company now, replaced by suits, share holders and investors who have little interest in creativity.
GW came, told him he cant have it on youtube anymore. He begged them not too, and signed a deal to have it remain up. So now they have him in limbo not allowed to produce any new content. They basicaly just got rid of the competition.
Literally, I was googling this last night! We just want an update!
I thought that GW actually approached him with an offer (must be one of the few times, they ACTIVELY approached someone instead of those people approaching them).
He had/has a patreon, I was subbed to it, but he never posted anything 40K related, or part of the GW IP.
Trouble is all of this happened during the GW fan animator copyrite war.
You've hit the nail on the head, GW couldn't have scored a bigger own goal by going after the animators, because there was so much online and ALL of it bringing in new fans and FREE advertising effectively. It's why I stopped miniature sculpting anything that was part of GWs IP, I could be copyrite struck just for posting photos of sculpts I did.
