    This was so helpful! Whenever I journal and say that I got a new student(which happens pretty often) Google always translates it as 새 and I was confused because in my lessons I've only learned 새로운. I've always wondered the difference and this helped me SO much! Thanks TTMIK!! ❤️❤️❤️

    Could you say that 새롭다 has a nuance of being innovative?

      Yes! Definitely :)

    • @selohcin
      @selohcin 6 лет назад +5

      It sounds like "revised" or "improved" to me. It really seems like English doesn't have an exact equivalent of 새롭다. We wouldn't use different words to distinguish between "the new iPhone that Apple just announced" and "the new iPhone I just purchased." We also wouldn't use two different words to distinguish "new house" from "new method of doing something", yet the Koreans clearly do. And we DEFINITELY don't have a word that distinguishes "brand new" from "it's not actually new, but it's new to me because I just received it".

    • @prinniapuff
      @prinniapuff 4 года назад +3

      @@selohcin I think the English equivalent to 새롭다 would be something like "novel." It's not a very colloquial word, but it's much closer to the idea of "something brand new to the world," like a "novel" idea or a "novel" invention. It's a bit more freely interchangeable with "new" in English, but it has a connotation closer to 새롭다, from the sound of it.

    As far As I understand (and feel free to correct me if I'm wrong), 새 is used for something that was recently made (almost like saying that object is "young"), and 새로운 describes something that hasn't existed before.
    So I have 2 questions:
    1) If a new book comes out, is it more natural to use 새로운 to describe it?
    (because it feels to me like both are correct, but 새로운 would refer to a new story, while 새 would refer to a book recently came out of the factory)
    2) If that book has a sequel, which is more natural?
    (because this isn't really a brand new story, I wasn't a 100% sure you could use 새로운)

    So I recently ordered a new car and when I told my teacher about it I used '새로운' because the specific car I ordered did not exist before. It was build according to my order. But now I realize that the model itself has been around some time so maybe I should have used '새'? I mean it doesn't get any newer than directly from the factory, right?
    Of course I cold have used '새로' in any case but I didn't know about it until now.

      Good catch! The verb here for "to build" is an irregular verb: 짓다! It drops the final ㅅ when it comes before vowels, but still acts like there's something there (so it becomes 지어요, 지은, and 지을). Before consonants, the ㅅ stays (짓습니다, 짓는, and 짓겠다.)!

    신- 이라는 한자와 결합해서 쓰이는건 외국인 에겐 좀 어려울라나..

      Yes, I think so too since I remember there's a similar word and pronunciation for "new" in Japanese and Chinese (新).

      Hello. I don't wish to be rude... but... um... how can you ask them to add "Arabic" translation when it's not even the 2nd largest spoken language on Earth? They don't even add the Spanish or Mandarin subtitles (even if Korea has a close connection with China). Arabic is a difficult language for English speakers, you know. How can you expect anyone and everyone to know this language? ... I hope you don't take my comment at heart. It's just a small suggestion from a Muslim to a Muslim.
