    There was only one problem I could find with this episode. You said that if he was able to jump into space and out of the solar system, that he would be floating out in space "naked because his pants burned off". If you know anything about the hulk you should know that his pants are more indestructible than he is. Actually, the genius in the Hulk comic was talking about the incalculable strength of Hulk's pants.

      Ashley Ferguson it is rediculous. I was thinking about how jumping works, and it involves accelerating the body upwards and letting the momentum carry upwards. So to launch at escape velocity means from a squat he basically moved his torso from 0 to a portion of light speed within a few feet.

    Newtons impact penetration laws would imply that the iron plate could only have reached space if it had turned sideways to intercept the air edge on or was deformed into an elongated shape. (which I determined to have been possible from some crude tests that I would like to repeat.) Likewise the air would stop the hulk if his cross sectional area intercepted his own mas of atmosphere; so assuming the hulk is a similar density to normal flesh he would need a length (height) of at least 10 meters to punch through.

    It's funny. I was thinking about the issue you mentioned on your last video, about the conservation of banner's momentum when leaving the planet.
    Assuming that Hulk weighs about 10 times as much as an average human male (800 kg), the maximum speed when the Hulk jumps - 11200 km/s - gives him a total momentum of 8.96*10^9 kg m/s. This change in momentum would also be transferred to the earth, meaning that the velocity change of the earth v=p/m=8.96*10^9/5.972*10^24=1.5 fm/s.
    A little over one femtometer (10^-15)m/s. Guess that on a global scale the hulk is puny after all ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
    Oh yeah, that was funny somehow. What I found funny about that, is that the nuclear explosion created by the Hulk's jump is probably more destructive than the force of the jump itself. And - I have to admit that I haven't seen the movies all too often or recently - I think we see a similar thing happen in the movies as well, where the hulk just uses his raw force to smash stuff, only occasionally blowing vehicles up by deliberately crashing them into one another. But as is demonstrated here, by using physics, hulk could do so much more with his power. If only Banner and Hulk worked together to smash stuff, they could be all-powerful. Now hulk is just wasted potential.
    (Yeah, the guy that literally punched time is wasted potential, shut up.)
    Another thing I thought of:
    Kyle, you mentioned that Banner would not be able to move once he got to the vacuum of space, but I think Banner is in the unique position where he can actually change his momentum applying external forces or removing mass from his body (such as undressing or ripping off a limb). This is depending on whether he can control his transformations perfectly, can transform partially and the mass of the hulk's limbs actually increases, but let's assume that for a second.
    If banner is floating in outer space, and he kicks back with his hulk-legs, the legs gain some backward momentum, and the rest of his body gets an equal amount of forward momentum. When a regular, non-shapeshifting human is floating in space, these momenta cancel each other out once your legs are fully stretched and you will be still in space again. However, if Banner kicks back with hulk-legs, and when they're going fastest, transforms them back into his human legs, his legs will lose some momentum (as momentum is the product of velocity and mass), whereas his body still has the same momentum as before. This means that there is a net change in momentum over his entire body, allowing him to 'swim' through space.

While Wolverine's bones are coated in the metal, from his ability to retain flexibility in his back it is clear each vertebrae remains independent, meaning the hulk most assuredly ripped apart the cartilage/ligaments/muscles/etc that hold those bones together, but he never explicitly damaged that metal.

    Also, wouldn't his regeneratibe powers, especially the ones we see in the movies (which are more extreme than his comic book abilities) , have the potential to trigger the cancer cells that lie doormat inside every human being?

      If we're talking about how strongly they have to 'grip' on Hulk, they need to be literally be at least as strong as him. When he jumps, due to Newton's First Axiom, his pants want to stay where they are. In order to stay on his hips, they need to apply enough force to compensate for Hulk's upward force, thus, staying attached to his hips.

    Wolverine's spine isn't a solid, adamantium rod though so your math there is way off.
    Using your logic, breaking a humans spine would be AT LEAST as hard as breaking a femur.
    But spines are segmented, not solid bone (or metal).
    So Wolverine's spine is still only as strong as the ligaments and muscles holding it together.

    Actually in the comic where Hulk faces Wolverine he isn’t breaking the adamantium in Wolvy’s spine, he is simply stretching the intervertebral fibrocartilage until he breaks it. So... wouldn’t the first strength of the Hulk calculated be much much muuuuuch less than 3*10^8N?

    What I'd like to know, is with his limited range of motion, how fast would he need to spring? He would need both speed and power, to escape the Earth. Short of creating fusion, are there surfaces that would possibly absorb his energy & prevent him from reaching escape velocity? It would be hard for him to jump to the moon, if he were in the ocean. Would dirt, topsoil or concrete suffice as a launch pad?

    And how many Hulk space jumps until a change in earth orbit around the sun could be noticed?

  • @gamemeister27

    I'm gonna be a bit nitpicky here, but I know you love it.
    The title of the episode, as well as the stated premise, differs from the content discussed. Namely, jumping into space, or reaching space in general, is different than reaching escape velocity. To jump into space, The Hulk would only have to reach the Kármán line, the definition of the boundry between earth's upper atmosphere and outer space as recognized by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale, which is 100 kilometers above sea level. After his entire body passes that distance from earth, he could fall back to planet and still have jumped into space, no flying through the endless void for all eternity required.

      I was going to comment on this, I was very confused when I saw the title and he started talking about escape velocity. A better title for the video would've been "Could the Hulk Jump to the Moon?" or "Can the Hulk Planet Hop?". Or if they kept the title they could've taught about how much acceleration it would take to get to various points, such as the Karman Line, the ISS Orbit, and even GEO. They could even talk about how much weight the Hulk could carry with him into space and then throw into an orbit (although it would have to be less than his mass otherwise he'd stick himself in orbit too).

    About wolverine spine, it is not a hunk of adamantium. There are pieces of bones attached together with muscle and ligaments that make up a spine. So wolverine spine would be a spine made by connecting bones plated with adamantium, connected with humanly muscle and ligaments. Ligaments and muscles are not even strong as iron, graphene is far away.

    Awesome episode, my kids and I found it very entertaining and educational. :)
    Question: With those incredible feats of strength, my son made and interesting comment, he said "Wow, if the Hulk is that strong then when he threw the tank in the movie that must have been super easy for him." Question being, dialing down the Hulks strength to the average strength of a person, how easy was it for Hulk to throw a tank? Would it be like an average person throwing a bicycle? Or would it be equal to throwing something even lighter? Thanks.
    Take Care and Be Well.

    • @seanpeery7780
      @seanpeery7780 5 лет назад +13

      It would depend on how angry he was. In world breaker mode his steps (without trying) shake Manhattan. Meaning that for Hulk in that state, walking through Manhattan is equivalent to a human walking on a glass coffee table. So how easy it would be for you to do x with the coffee table, that's about how easy it would be for the Hulk to do that with All of Manhattan. At world breaker Hulk, throwing a tank is close to throwing a strand of hair, it wouldn't even have the density necessary to move as fast or as far as Hulks upper limit would allow with a denser or larger object.
      In the movies though, he is only at the level where he is jumping several miles at a time. Short of doing acutal math we can assume that he is operating at a level that is best described as metal to him feeling like how cardboard is to us. So the tanks would just be large cardboard boxes.

    Yeah, comic book companies do not normally have physics advisors on staff and continuity is not a universal concern. Look at the multiple retcons and DC's multiple universe wide revisions. I think the most difficult thing is not achieving the actual escape velocity (Hulk comic book logic) but achieving the escape velocity in the distance from bent knee to straightened knee. This is in comparison to space craft that have extended periods of thrust to reach escape velocity. I am assuming that the increase in altitude does not play a significant role in reducing escape velocity (though I may be wrong).
    Assuming that the initial velocity is at rest (0) and the final velocity is 11.2 km/s, and the extension of Hulk's leg is 1m (for simplicity) then the acceleration is 62.7E6 m/s/s, using v(2)^2=v(1)^2+2aD. It is no where near Planck Acceleration but I doubt that it is possible for any physical object. It is beyond me, but I wonder what is the largest acceleration recorded at the LHC for comparison.

    I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Robert Brownlee before his passing in May of this year. He was a good man with many stories to tell. It's funny that you mention operation plumbbob. I could be misremembering, but one of his stories involves that test. When they were setting up the site the nuclear payload wasn't ready yet, so they used a wooden mockup as a replacement fitting. Obviously, they replaced it before the test, but several years later Dr. Brownlee visited a military surplus shop. Sitting in a corner was the wood mockup. Nobody knew what it was, so he picked it up cheap and put it in his living room. He was also into making stained glass windows. I'm at least 90% sure the story was plumbbob, but it has been a while.

A moon size impactor would have a hard time doing something like if it only came at Earth at escape velocity.

    I've been thinking about how to calculate the initial velocity needed to breach the atmosphere. The drag equation is
    F = 0.5 * rho * v^2 * C * A
    where F is drag force, rho is air density, v is speed, C is drag coefficient, and A is (usually) the projected frontal area. Now, for speeds near Mach 1, the drag coefficient depends heavily on velocity. However, when traveling at several times the speed of sound, the drag coefficient levels off to become roughly constant. For a blunt object such as a sphere (and, presumably, the Hulk), this hypersonic drag coefficient is around one. The important thing, though, is that the drag coefficient is essentially constant for objects traveling many times the speed of sound, e.g. at escape velocity or faster.
    So what happens when we travel some infinitesimal distance Delta_d? Let us multiply both side of the drag equation by Delta_d. The left side of the equation becomes
    F * Delta_d = - Delta_E
    or the infinitesimal change in kinetic energy (the energy change is negative since the force opposes the object's motion). On the other side of the equation, we can combine
    rho * A * Delta_d = Delta_m
    which gives us the total mass of air that we have to push out of the way in order to travel the distance Delta_d. The full equation then becomes
    - Delta_E = 0.5 * C * v^2 * Delta_m
    and since kinetic energy is 0.5*M*v^2, where M is the mass of the projectile, we can re-express the equation as
    Delta_E / Delta_m = - C * E / M
    which is a differential equation. Solving this equation gives us
    E_f = E_i * exp( - C m / M )
    where E_f and E_i are the final and initial kinetic energies, C is the drag coefficient, m is the total mass of air that must be pushed out of the way, and M is the mass of the projectile. Using E = 0.5*M*v^2, we get
    v_f = v_i * exp( - 0.5 * C m / M ) or v_i = v_f * exp( 0.5 * C m / M ).
    If we want to punch through the atmosphere, then the total mass of air to move is
    m = (1.03 kg / cm^2) * A
    where A is, again, the projected frontal area. The MCU Hulk is a little over 8ft tall, so let us assume that the Hulk is 2.5m tall, 1.0m wide, and 0.5m deep. Jumping straight up, then, gives A = 1.0m * 0.5m = 0.5m^2 = 5000cm^2.
    We don't know the Hulk's mass from the movies, but I've read that in the comics it ranges from 1000-1400 lbs. Let's assume, then, that the Hulk weighs about 700kg, or more than 1500 lbs, to give him the best chance of punching through the atmosphere.
    The final two numbers we need are the drag coefficient (we will assume C=1, the value for a lot of blunt objects) and the final velocity, which we will take to be escape velocity. Plugging in all the numbers, we find that
    v_i = 39.6 * v_f = 443 km/s.
    Of course, this is in the best case scenario; if the hulk is a bit less massive, say, 500kg or around 1100 lbs, then the required initial speed is around 170 times escape velocity, or 1900 km/s. Fortunately, this is still nowhere near relativistic speeds, but . . . yeah.
    Moving through air takes a whole lotta work.

      I think Kyle's comparison to Project Plumbbob was apt, and shows us why the ground would not need to be able to support the jump. Hulk is basically adding energy to the ground, enough energy to be comparable to a very large explosion. He would be flung into space by the force of the blast, which, while not a jump in the traditional sense, would accomplish the task easily.

    Or would that energy loss be insignificant in front of the hulk's incredible might?
    And if i make it into footnotes then fuck yeah!
    Love your show!

      I thought the same but all that matter would need time to move away and compress so if the Hulk released his energy in a frame of just a few nanoseconds, he would lift off even before the platform could start to properly deform and it would just go nuclear dozen nanoseconds later. There would be significant energy loss but the faster You release the energy the smaller that loss would be. If he tried to perform his jump in thousandth of a second, he would go practically nowhere, just punch his feet through the platform and flop some short distance away.

      Hulk is use to jumping miles at a time. Each time he does this I'm sure he compresses whatever surface he's jumping from. It only means that he will wind up jumping from a newly created hole instead of the original surface. Depending on the level and consistency of the bedrock, he would be jumping an extra few feet. Not really a significant difference compared to the distances he can reach. Besides, whatever surface he jumps from is gonna explode, and earthquakes will occur. Heck, he probably has started a volcano or two during his existence.

    • @jwhite5008
      @jwhite5008 5 лет назад

      He will probably cause an nuclear explosion similar to the one that killed dinosaurs, but concentrated - so immense that it would be the explosion itself that he will be jumping off of. He won't just jump - rather the air around him will become superheated plasma, making him into a rocket temporarily.
      With such energies and speeds he might as well be just climbing air as if it was solid.... somehow. It's not possible to output this amount of energy in such small volume so fast anyway.
      This is simply a "shooting a cannon to the moon" question, with Hulk being cannonball. At very high speeds air is solid, a lot of speed is lost to literally compress its molecules, so even more is needed, and even more is lost. This generates insane amounts of heat, radiation, light etc.
      I'm not sure if any kind of theoretical material is able to withstand such heat and not be vaporized - probably, not. Hulk will be invariably immensely irradiated too, anyone ever coming anywhere near him will quickly die of radiation sickness. That is if the jump itself does not kill every human altogether.

      Well, Hulk has hit objects hard enough to have them leave Earth orbit. And, he has jump almost into low orbit. That was long ago when he was weaker. He could do it, but Banner's persona probably keeps him from doing it.

    A great comparison for this scenario is the Parker Solar Probe which launched recently. The Parker Solar Probe is, as the name suggests, a probe which will pass through our sun's corona and gather data on things like why our sun's corona is a blistering 1 million degrees celsius while the actual photosphere or "crust" of the sun is only 6000 degrees celsius. To do this, the probe needs to not only reach the escape velocity of the earth, but then needs to "slow down" so it can be on an elliptical orbit trajectory that will have a perigee of only about 3.9 million miles from the sun and a maximum velocity of 194.444 kilometers per second. The probe achevis this trajectory by launching on a rocket called a Delta IV, the Delta IV is a huge rocket commonly used to put the nation's largest satellites into a geostationary orbit. However in this case, it will be used to accelerate the probe to 33.5583333 Kilometers per second. This isn't as fast as the hulk would be going or even the steel disk in operation plumbbob, but the probe is still going 15 times the escape velocity of the earth by the time it reaches 200 kilometers above the earth. To put the delta IV into perspective, it could send the Hulk into a geostationary orbit trajectory.
    On a side note, when Kyle mentioned operation plumbbob it sparked something in my memory, if you do the math, you would find that the steel disk wouldn't have made it to space as it was. However, the shockwave from the blast could have deformed the disk into a much more aerodynamic conical shape, Cody'slab explains this in much more detail though.
    One thing thing that I am curious about is this, if the Hulk was pushing down on the ground to generate enough force to reach escape velocity, wouldn't the ground just compress, thereby absorbing most of the energy generated by the hulk's legs? Because if that was true that the hulk might just be left standing in a crater instead of reaching escape velocity.

    I don't think he would be able to unless he starts his jump on a titanium or tungsten plate. Ever try jumping or running in sand? Your feet sink and you barely go anywhere. Hulk would turn the ground to dust and his feet would just sink. Sure, he'd get some hang time, but even solid rock wouldn't be solid footing under that kind of force.

    • @jong2359
      @jong2359 5 лет назад +4

      Don't try to use your earthly materials in this conversation. Sand, titanium, tungsten... all materials are virtually the exact same when faced with the amount of pressure this would cause.

    Want to know how powerful the Hulk really is? Really, really is? Here's a relatively recent feat:
    The Hulk, at the end of the World War Hulk storyline, when he returned to Earth from Sakaar more pissed off than he had ever been before, fought the Biblical Angel of Death, the Creeping, slay every first born son, Death, a creature with the power of a million exploding suns (a.k.a. The Sentry), to not just a stand still, but started to gain ground. The Hulk, when angry enough, can literally defeat death itself.
    And people wonder why the heroes and villains of Earth collectively shit their pants when the Hulk comes calling.

  • @Sefilenginar
    @Sefilenginar 5 лет назад +1

    Given the distance he must create and apply the force to jump is maybe a meter or two, (from squat to standing posture) the material he's standing on should be able to create the reaction pressure by compressing and providing that peak force within that very short distance under about the area of bottom of his feet. There is no common everyday material that can do that, so whatever he's standing on, be it asphalt, concrete, steel, etc. he'd be limited to maybe a few hundred meters vertical capability at best. He needs either to have VERY big feet (large area, less pressure), to be VERY light (low mass, low reaction force) or to be VERY tall (long legs, less acceleration, less reaction force) to be able to pull this off, preferably a combination of those.
    Another way to look at it could be to imagine how deep would a 1 ton object harder than anything and unbreakable, in-stretchable, would penetrate solid earth if it was thrown at it with that speed? It could easily penetrate straight through Lithosphere, all the way to the Mantle.

  • @everythinggoodsfeckingtaken

    Causing the eastern seaboard to sink is based on fault lines already storing immense amounts of pressure energy. All the Hulk might do is pull the trigger as it were. To continue with that analogy, you are effectively attributing the person who lights the fuse or pulls the trigger with the force expelled by the subsequent chain of events leading to the explosion.

    I'm just going to post a Blueberry pancake recipe.
    1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
    1/2 teaspoon salt
    1 tablespoon baking powder
    1 1/4 teaspoons white sugar
    1 egg
    1 cup milk
    1/2 tablespoon butter, melted
    1/2 cup frozen blueberries, thawed
    1. In a large bowl, sift together flour, salt, baking powder and sugar. In a small bowl, beat together egg and milk. Stir milk and egg into flour mixture. Mix in the butter and fold in the blueberries. Set aside for 1 hour.
    2. Heat a lightly oiled griddle or frying pan over medium high heat. Pour or scoop the batter onto the griddle, using approximately 1/4 cup for each pancake. Brown on both sides and serve hot.
