- Here we continue on with the Project 92 YJ and remove the 4.0 engine. This is a 1992 Jeep Wrangler YJ with an inline 6 4.0L engine. The AMC 4.0 engine is very common in Wranglers and Cherokees. This is the process I went through to remove the engine once it was fully prepped for removal. Then this summer I will swap all the parts over to the new one and rebuild it because it is rust free but has bad rodknock. I've been looking for rebuild videos so tha I know what I'm getting into and your series is the best by far

To honest I had not watched this film as I have done it so many times myself. Great video as always Dale. My one suggestion is to pull both or at least one fender. It isn't hard to float everything for one. It makes the engine removal a simple job and you can get to your tub-fender bolts out to clean and paint that area. It is very prone to rusting on the bottom. Great film.

Great video. One suggestion get yourself a rock bar. Makes it easy to move the engine hoist side to side. Been there done that. Place the bar between the leg and the floor. Lift and it moves easily. Crow bar would work to, just harder.

its june of 2024, my 17th birthday is in march of 2025 and me and my dad just decided we were going to take our 91' jeep yj with a 6 cylinder 4L engine apart and rebuild it to be my first car. wish us luck.

This is a great video. There are a few differences on mine. It’s an 02. I am currently doing everything in the video that you’re doing except the transmission is sitting on a skid plate and I only have to block it above the transfer case. By the way, what’s the name of your cat?

Good job man. I am starting on removing my 4.0 on my 99 tj sunday. Replacing it with a long block 4.0. Glad to see I am not the only one to remove the grill. Jeep on!
Aaron, I have the same 99TJ, how did your removal go and would you do it again? I want to tackle mine soon, can you or anyone offer advice on how to keep all of the removed parts straight and do you keep a log of your steps to then play in reverse? Also, how difficult is it to align the engine with the transmission when putting back together (mine is an automatic)?
Question: Why do they have the two 1/2 inch diameter bolts on the bell housing (both sides, near the bottom) that only help secure the inspection cover?
You should get an external slave bell housing and convert your slave cylinder while you have the engine out. Just my humble opinion. Great job, I enjoy your videos and learn allot from them. I have a ‘94 Jeep YJ with the 2.5L, its time to pull my engine and rebuild it.

JeepSolid - I believe all you need is the bell housing, new release bearing & slave cylinder.
I’m in the process of retrofitting a Jeep TJ nv3550 and hydraulic clutch into my brothers 83 cj7 with the 258. I was surprised how easily things just bolted together, except the clutch pedal, I’m still working on that one. Good luck, can’t wait for the next video! 👍

I have a 1997 Wrangler 4.0L with 210,000 miles. Engine is still running fine but going to be pro-active and drop in a new crate engine from AWP before I get any older. Can you do a video on how to reinstall the distributor on a replacement engine. Not sure if I can just drop in the old distributor without first indexing the firing position and/or is the new crate engine already indexed to receive the distributor? Hope this makes since....
I feel you with the not having any helpers. Currently planning on how to pull the 4.0 on my Comanche without another set of hands 😑

Watched your video regarding the use of Plastigauge during your piston install. I've yet to dig into my 4.0L but was just curious. What if the clearance is out of specification during my build? Hopefully it'll be fine come that point in my rebuild so just curious.
Hi I saw your video, I am planning on removing my engine in my jeep also. How long did it take from start to take things apart, removal, install, and put it all together?
Looks like you could use some Gearwrenches... and..the passenger side motor mount, you could've just un-bolted the mount from the frame... I just replaced my motor mounts last weekend...easy peesy...
Yeah, just going after the motor mount may have been quicker.
so if I have my 4.0 rebuilt, my engine will be pretty much good as new? I'm trying to take my YJ on some long distance trips
Great video! Very happy to see it out of the jeep! So just noticed at 2:12ish when you were removing the two top bolts on the bell housing that they were hex heads. When I did mine I had to go out and buy whats called a "E-12" socket in order to remove it. Went down to my local ace and bought 2 grade 8 Hex replacements when I reinstalled. Is that a factory thing on your 92? I have a 95 with the 4.0 and it was not fun getting to them.
Yeah, some have that E12. Not sure if the previous owner had swapped them out...? I should have mentioned that in my video...
Good job on the extraction! I assume you're just rebuilding this motor and re-installing? DO you know anyone that has swapped in a small block V8? I am thinking of doing that with my old '89 YJ. The 4.2l is pretty bagged out, and I don't know if it was ever much of a motor. Thoughts? Cheers.

Hi All help appreciated...Will a 1996 Jeep Cherokee Country motor inner change with a 1998 Jeep Cherokee XJ. I have already notice that some of my plug ends are different on the 98 vs the 96. LIKE...Sensors IAC, MAP,,TPS, etc. Coil and also oil sending unit, fuel injecter .. I think i can just change the above mentioned parts onto the 96 motor but i dont know if one of those parts is my problem on the 98 now. 98 has a bad miss and lose of power. riding home from work just started missing and lose a lot of power. Still will star and run and takes gas good but misses. The 96 is a good motor. lot a miles but still a good motor. I just need to know if these motors will inner change.

But thank you for the engine shackling advice. I have to do a pull in a week but I'm thinking of pulling the transmission with it so I can clean it and other parts. Also I hear its easier.

@@JeepSolid Any hydraulic crane has the slang "cherry picker". I think if it doesn't fill the job of lifting someone to pick cherries or anything similar to this it doesn't deserve or relate to the nickname. It just makes me shudder because I have treated people electrocuted by cherry pickers, the ones that lift a person to the tops of trees and power lines.
How much in total did it cost start to finish to rebuild the jeep?

Your life probably would've been easier if you removed the fenders. Gives you more room to play with.
