What a sublime rendition of a classic rendered unforgettably by one of the greatest female voices ( or forget gender- voices period!) of the last half- century. Haunting, moving, spellbinding.. any superlative would fit... timeless.
Another reason to applaud the RUclips library of unpredictable musical surprises. I've discovered singers I'd heard more about over the years than really listened to. I hate to admit it but I never before really heard k.d. laing sing before except in some commercial, and it was this Porter classic. I was just finished drenching my ears in some Amy Winehouse live shows, and saw one of the panels to the right showing k.d.laing, I listened to her sing Orbison's "Crying", another song, "Halleluiah" and topped off the tank with "So in Love". Man, has this lady got soul! That voice could stop a tidal wave!
I discovered KD while purchasing BMG albums. I had one more pick, and randomly picked Absolute Torch and Twang. Never had heard of her. Best album ever.
kd is one of the great singers of the past 30 years. "Constant Craving" is an addictive song. More recently, she did a cover of "Hallelujah" that was a jawdropper at a tribute concert for Leonard Cohen. Just incredible
I remember seeing this on TV. I didn't know anything about her, and only a little about Cole Porter, but thought it was so beautiful. MOnths later, it somehow came up in a conversation with a friend of mine, who told me about the CD. I immediately went out and bought it. I also went to a concert where she did her Ingenue album. Also fantastic, but I like this particular song better. I lost that CD, but then years later bought it again. Now I think I've lost it again, but I'm so glad for the internet where I can call if up anytime, although the quality isn't quite as good. It's still beautiful. She's one of the few pop singers who really understood how to use vibrato, better even than opera singers.
There's pretty much no song on earth she couldn't make a notch better with her interpretation. Had she wanted to, she could have easily had the kind of recording career Barbara Streisand had. I wish she had fit in a few more repertory albums along the way, just because her voice is one of the most beautiful things in creation, but it seems clear she doesn't enjoy being that kind of singer. Bravo k.d., may you continue to sing many more years.
beautiful voice? Ahahahahahah She's stunning awesome almost incredible! This song has an extremely high difficult level, even in the movie about Porter they' re also told the same thing, in fact a duet did the song! How many singers could sing "So in love" live perfectly?. Nobody. Only kd Lang.
I don't think she cares. She's accomplished so much...it's the American Industries loss plus she has a following way beyond anything the American Industry could have accomplished for her. She's one of the wonders of the world!!!!
Can we just reflect on Cole Porter. A genius of a writer who wrote music to the person he loved. However he was Gay!!!! So his music was never actually looked at properly. A Movie with his music was filmed with Cary Grant in the 1950's but was sugar coated. However a movie with Kevin Kline was made but that was not accepted. How about we just accept his music for what it was. Fuc-ing brilliant. And KD Lang singing this song is just sublime. Who gives a FU-K who you love, so long as you have been loved in your life for who you are!! What more could you ask for??
@@whatadollslife I was being facetious. Porter has been widely known and celebrated worldwide pretty much continually since 1929. And during his 1991 centennial, there was a lot of discussion in news stories and album liner notes regarding his sexuality and how contemporary audiences might understand lyrics that earlier generations had understood as being only about heterosexual attraction.
@@NancyR3454 It is not only her voice, Nancy. That's what she is lucky to be born with. I admire her art to sing so pitch perfect, her dynamics, her intonation, etc etc. That is something that you have to practice, of course talent will help. Sorry to sound patronizing.
I love k.d. Lang and no one can sing a song like she can; but this backup band plays much too loud and drowns out her voice. They should never play that loud with a vocalist. I have noticed this in the last 10 or so years, that bands with singers tend to drown out their voices. Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Perry Como, Streisand would never have allowed that...their voices had to be what your heard the most...the band was secondary to the singer...an enhancement, not a solo on any instrument backing up a singer.
Annie .. I dunno if you`ve ever played on TV ...but alot of things are out of the musicians control . Usually you get much less time than you need. Each musician gets an earphone of floor monitor that they need to hear each instrument and especially themselves. If they don`t hear themselves well they often need to play a little harder just to control the time feel and harmony. After this there is an on stage mix engineer and then a guy in a booth who mixes the band to send it to TV land. Often the mix engineer is the one who decides on who in the band is most important and how loud they should be. Your deduction that the players are responsible for where things sit around the voice in unfair, Of course if we were all in a room hearing the natural balance in an acoustic environment ,,,then you just might be right,
Everyone in the band plays with obvious respect for Cole Porter. Definitely one of my favorite Cole Porter tunes. And he had a lot of them. I believe this is the only song he wrote in a minor key ? Just to expand on Porter, Caetano Veloso has a beautiful version as well.
Hey Don! How can I make a request? Here in the comments? I've been looking for a clip of a band called Masters of Reality who appeared on the show with Ginger Baker on drums. They were promoting a record called Sunrise On the Sufferbus and it would've been in late 92 or more likely early 93 as the record was officially released in February, 1993. They may have played more than one song, but I remember really liking their appearance on the show.
I'm striking out finding this. No "Masters of Reality," no songs that were on their LP "Sunrise on the Sufferbus, nothing. The only Ginger Baker I found was he and Jack Bruce sitting in with the band and also performing "Hey Now Princess" on February 9, 1990.
@@dongiller - Maybe I'm thinking they appeared on Late Night (or even the Late Show later in the year) when they really didn't. It WAS a long time ago, after all. But thanks for looking. Very nice of you, Don!

I should’ve also added incredibly sensual and mysterious..❤️🍷
Also, hypnotic, ethereal and definitely addicting.

One of the best singers ever. She makes me melt.
She and Janis both bring me to tears. So beautiful.
There's just no one else with her control, timbre and vocal beauty. Someone like kd only comes around every hundred years or so.
Me as well!!!!
This is the time she was very thin. I was so worried she was sick.
Besides that. Beautiful voice
One of the few singers who are pitch perfect......just wonderful.....
You know a singer has 'chops' when they can pull off an old standard... LIVE!
I love her version of this song.
No one can compare to this amazing voice.
Agreed.

Wish she did Cole Porter album. Her range can easily make those gems shine anew.

I love this song. Absolutely no one ever sang it better than KD.

In my next life, if I'm granted a singing voice, I want this one......or Anita Baker's. Either would be a gift.

She's from Canada, but the story doesn't change 👍
@@sanciac8842 I hope that she's not bitter. Maybe Canadians have learned forgiveness better. But after watching Alainis Morisette, I'm not so sure.
and just say that again, someone with so much talent.

Classic Coke Porter. Classic KD Lang ❤️

Excellent..Oui.
