Humility and accountability would have saved this man's career and legacy. I believe that if he had just been brutally honest, and then just showed how he planned to donate and possibly make up for it, people would forgive this. The tone of the response video from Jirad destroyed any sympathy people had for him.

Karl and Muta asked the most important question during that call. "When did you learn about it?" Jirard was not prepared. He paused but knew he had to answer. 2021 seemed safe. He changed his mind and made it 2022. Imagine if that question hadn't been asked. I think one of the saddest parts about this fiasco is that it will make people even more skeptical towards donating to charities. There are plenty of good, hardworking charities that do use the donated money to help others when they need it. So when you have RUclipsrs and Influencers scamming people using their name, it does so much harm and it's sad that Jirard can't comprehend that he is doing a lot more harm to the charities with his actions, and rather than make amends so that people can feel comfortable knowing that they can donate safely, he doubles down on his actions. Again, the real victims would be honest, genuine charities that will be affected because people have been burned by would be "generous" influencers that later were found out to be scammers trying to paint a great image of themselves.

I didn’t watch any content creators on RUclips until late 2022 and it was only a few that did specifically Switch eShop deals and 2 very small Switch let’s play game channels. I actually didn’t watch any talk/discussion streams until spring 2023 when TOTK came out and I lurked this channel. Although I’ve had some discussions of what I think and feel going below the surface of this situation in your discord chat, I won’t repeat it here. Warning: very long.
That being said, I never watched The Completionist, and didn’t even know about his channel since YT never showed me his channels even though I love indie games and mostly play indies. But being that I’m a completionist, as a personal thing, I assumed he liked to be thorough. When I saw Mutahar’s videos break the news (because YT does show me his content), I thought it was just another YTber doing dumb things and screwing up their careers which actually sounds pretty normal. I laughed at the contradiction of his name vs actions. How the hell are you going call yourself “The Completionist” and NOT actually complete the one task you keep publicly barking on and on about it being an “important cause” and blah blah blah. I had no idea that Jirard was loved and respected in the gaming community and that sort of thing vetted a person not just in social circumstances but in careers that takes place in the public domain. But with all things public, anything that goes south has the effect of a nuclear explosion that reverberates and follows that public persona throughout the entirety of their career and will serve as a constant reminder. In early November, I already saw this situation had the trappings of a nuclear explosion ready to happen. It wasn’t a matter of “IF,” but of “WHEN.”
Being that I’m an outsider and still consider myself an outsider because I’m weary and suspicious of anything to do with “community,” I just shrugged it off as being whatever. But as more and more factual evidence unfold, I paid attention to the serious legal ramifications. I come from working in legal prosecution; particularly special fraud cases (like Ponzi schemes, real estate embezzlement, even large prostitution rings), and this situation has a lot of the general qualities of the fraud cases I’ve worked on and have seen them prosecuted with a guilty verdict in the court rooms. I don’t know any specifics of the case, so I can’t comment on the question of whether there will be criminal charges, but judging by what evidence Karl and Mutahar have shown, some of it can carryover from the civil side to criminal because some evidence appears to possess criminal elements. And depending on the severity of the fraudent nature of the case, multiple governmental agencies can take action and prosecute. Now, just because there’s some criminal elements to a case, it doesn’t mean it’ll become a criminal case. It depends on how badly those agencies want to go after you and how good they feel they can successful prosecute. The likelihood of it involving other persons besides Jirard- very very likely. This means the case would take quite some time to do deep dives in discovery phase. I would like to add, although I come from a prosecutorial background, this case can still be a class action lawsuit (civil) because it has affected many persons over the course of multiple years (10 years at this point). In short, even if Jirard is in trouble with the IRS, it doesn’t just stop there. It could expand to both civil and criminal wings of the law AT THE SAME TIME.
So yes, to say that Jirard is deathly afraid, that’s an understatement.

In retrospect, Jirard comes off as a compulsive liar which is why so much of this stuff came apart like a house of cards. Like his repeatedly listing of all the organizations the Open Hand were consistenly big donors of and how the story he told to Mutahar and Jobst in the audio call completely 180'd in his response video.
As for the "why didn't he just take the L?" question, I think it really comes down to JIrard not wanting to take that hit to his business reputation. Unlike some of his contemporaries its pretty apparent that Jirard had bigger ambitions than just being a gaming youtuber. Indie land had him networking and rubbing elbows with various big indie developers. He was a big ambassador for Nintendo. So him getting outed for potentially committing charity fraud would potentially nuke all the business relationships he cultivated this past decade or so, far more severe than your typical "cancelling."
All of this to say, none of it is an excuse. And I think both he and his fanbase now trying to flip this as potentially screwing ove his employees is gross.

There was no simply taking the L here dude. He's committed felonies, his only possible defense would be to try to blame his family members, and stick to the story of simply being the public face. In that case, there's other issues of inside the family but if the FEC or whomever is the right agencies to deal with this type of crime decides to press charges or do an audit, he's going to jail. Owning up to it, and taking the L, would be an admission of guilt, that could be used against him court. Of course he's also admitted to it without the owning up to it part, which makes him look 50 times more the scumbag, and then tried to deflect by defaming previous friend Jontron with the whole "but he's racist for saying non cucked things, and I'm a gooder person", and offering to bribe Jobst and Muta, then threatening to sue Jobst and Muta. A court is going to find it hard to be convinced he deserves any leniency. The worst part is, this is all been made highly public.
He's not only couldn't simply take the L, but me managed to make that a very big CAPITAL LETTER L. His attempts to mitigate damage, have painted him in the worse light possible.

I have a hard time believing several hundred thousand did not accrue any interest at all. Also a full breakdown of what was collected in terms of direct money, twitch donations, bits, subs, sponsorships, merch sales and other things needs to be made with accounting for what the expenses were and who was paid for what services delivered. Some expenses have to be expected when income includes item sales for charity, but only the real number will solve this regardless if exonerates or damns Jirard

There is little that could change those basic facts now - unless it is suddenly revealed Jirard is a pod person who was replaced by aliens a decade ago and the real guy has been on Xenu with Ron Hubbard!

Something that has been bothering me that I don't see people bringing up is that there were red flags that either nobody noticed or cared about. For example, apparently the Khalil family doesn't know the difference between benefactor and beneficiary. The directors of a charity don't even know the basic terminology that we all know. They have their supposed beneficiaries listed as "benefactors" on their website. There was so much blatant negligence that just went unnoticed by everyone. It just went on and nobody cared enough to look at it in detail. Personally I think a charity whose own directors and website regularly confuse terms like beneficiary and benefactor is pretty sus. I wonder if anybody ever actually went to the website, saw that, and went "nah, fam." It's honestly surprising that just never got corrected by anyone. Nobody ever pointed it out or anything. This might seem like a weird thing to focus on but it's such a basic thing and it would have been so easy to have someone proofread the site just to make sure it looks okay. They couldn't be bothered to do even that much

What Jirard did was indeed wrong. I've been following him for over a decade now and this really hurts to watch unfold.
What I don't like however, is people still thinking he kept the money for his own gain. That doesn't seem to be the case. But the management of the money is awful. Going so long, having your donors thinking they are donating to a good cause only for nothing to be done is the worst thing you could experience. I just want to know why he let this go on for so long despite knowing.
The new audio shows that this is also someone who knew what he was doing was wrong, yet he didn't try and change his future.
I always give others a second chance if they really want to change. And I will do the same for Jirard if he comes clean. His path forward will be extremely difficult. I don't wish for the downfall or despair of anyone. I only hope he can mend what can be mended and tha the continues to move forward in life.

Remember that Muta abd Karl were tipped off before they went about investing. Someone around Jirard knew what was going on and told THEM which creates an atmosphere that Jirard would have remained quiet for as long as it was convenient for HIM. He can say it 'wasn't cool' bit if he knew since 2022/2022, he still did nothing if it warranted someone on the inside to whistle blow.

I don't think Jirard ever internalized that neither Muta nor Jobst were attacking him with malicious intent. Had he approached this critically and got on the discord again and say "What do I need to square away to make things right?", then he could've mitigated the damage much more effectively.

If he made an effort to fix things when he "discovered" that the funds were not donated to any charities, he could have saved this whole situation. His dishonesty and the actions of his company/charity lead to this. It could have been anyone else, it wouldn't have to have been Karl or Muta to discover it and bring things to light and the same things would have happened. What messed me up more were the people I was subbed to that are friends with him, backing him even AFTER the second round of information came out. He didn't deserve unconditional support, especially for this crap situation.
